I still need additional help finding videos of skaters saying their names!

Any video is better than nothing. I'm also happy to take a look at alternate video versions of skaters that may already be posted here -- the quality could be better, or audio clearer, or the way the skater says their name in another video could be useful somehow.

Since you went to the bother of explaining how to pronounce her first name as well, can I ask you something I have often wondered?

In Russian, "Dasha" is a familiar form for the name "Daria". Just like "Masha" is a familiar for "Maria"; or "Natasha" is a familiar for "Natalia". (Of course, "Natasha" has become a popular name in it's own right in other countries).

So, I have often wondered if it is the same in Slovenian. Is "Daša" a familiar form of the name "Daria"?

Or is "Daša" like "Natasha": it originated as a derivative of "Daria", but over time became a name in its own right?

Or, is "Daša" not related to "Daria" at all?

I am really curious to find out.

Sorry for taking the thread off topic. But, this is something that I have been wondering for a LONG time (since I first saw Daša Grm), and this seemed the perfect opportunity to ask it.

Unrelated to pronunciation, but your comments also remind me how Sonya/Sonia/Sonja has become its own name unrelated to Sofia (or other spellings).

And how almost all the skaters I've known or known of named Sonja have spelled it with a j, regardless of ethnic background.

Hi! I realise that in Satoko Miyahara's video posted in her OP, she pronounces her name in a sort of English manner, not as she would properly pronounce it in Japanese. (I don't know if this is making sense but as a Japanese speaker myself, when I pronounce my name in English, it's totally different from how I do it in Japanese. Not to mention that the family name comes first.)

ETA: Okay, I realise that other Japanese skaters (I saw Yuzu and Mao) videos also show how they would pronounce their names in English. I'll see if I could find the videos of others (I'm pretty sure I can find one for Yuzu and Mao) and post it later when I got time!

It's funny that while Yuzu, Mao and Daisuke all introduces themselves as 'I am xxx xxx, figure skate.' which is a quite odd use of English term (I suppose it was written so in the script), Tatsuki correctly says 'I am Tatsuki Machida, a figure skater.' I suppose he corrected the script by himself since the subtitle says otherwise. So Tatsuki :laugh:

This thread already has had a somewhat thorny discussion as to whether authentic pronunciations (vs. pronunciations for an English-speaking audience) are desirable for this thread and project.
Thank you for bringing up the distinction again.

I hasten to add that it is not my decision to make.
That said, I previously had offered raw videos with authentic pronunciations from Satoko and Yuzuru. (Surname first, etc.)

The same post has links also for authentic pronunciations from Takahito Mura, Narumi Takahashi, and Ryuichi Kihara.
Plus Cathy and Chris Reed -- pronouncing their names "in Japanese" [i.e., for a Japanese-speaking audience]. (Interesting at least to me :).)

ETA: My thanks once again to Doris :bow: and sabinfire :bow: for their extensive work on this project.​

Oh I see. Personally, I feel very happy when a non-Japanese speaker try to learn how to pronounce my name in Japanese... Yes, Reeds case is very interesting - it questions what is 'authentic' really. And just to confuse people more, my name is pronounced somewhat differently in my dialect from how it sounds in a standard Japanese :laugh: I suppose we could have both :yes: Thank you for your videos too!
