I wrote this because I am feeling a lot of sympathy for Mao.
This is quite beautiful. And I love "men with microscopes squinted to see a touch on the ice" (guilty!)
But what do you mean by "the value of her axel took a big hit in the new system?" I wasn't aware of any changes that hurt the value of 3A?
Agreed with what the previous poster said. The value of the triple axel and maybe the quads have always be an issue since the IJS was introduced. At Vancouver many people were talking about the base values of Mao's 3A+2T and Yuna's 3L+3T, and they were shocked that Mao's combo didn't receive at least the same, if not higher, than Yuna's 3L+3T, Kristi Yamaguchi and the british commentators said so.
And I think, the current system encourage skaters to go away from harder combo, for example, a 3T+3Lo and a 3Lo+3T receive the same value, but the former one is harder because one has to do a loop after a jump, which is harder than doing a toeloop. In this case many skaters tend to do a toe-loop rather than a loop-toe to ensure a place on the podium. Of course I am not saying that every one who has been on the podium adopted this strategy and not every one has to do a XXX+loop combo, but this is how the system is working.
I remember this video of Scott Hamilton on American tv that was posted on youtube where he explained that Yuna's 3Lz+3T was worth more points than Mao's 3A+2T because "it was more difficult since Yuna did 6 revolutions in the air and Mao did only 5 and 1/2" and I was like ...... ???????!!!!!??????? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING???? STOP LYING RIGHT NOW. HOW CAN A FORMER SKATER SAY THOSE BS??
I also remember that after the short program, everyone was kinda disgusted Mao was 5 points behind when both her and Yuna skated perfectly. Hard times...

I also heard that Scott Hamilton said that Adelina Sotnikova had the first one handed Biellmann in the Olympics, even though he was announcing when Mao did my favorite one handed Biellmann in Vancouver.

Scott Hamilton was that commentator on NBC during and before the Vancouver Olympics, right? Because if he was, I remember him as that EXTREMELY talkative guy to the point where it just got annoying.
