Joshua Farris

They say Jason should go, they should both go and sit in the stands together and the camera can cut to them every now and again.

I definitely think he'd keep Pines of Rome! :)

If they/he can't travel, it would be fun if they live-tweeted comments on standout performances while watching the event at home.

Actually, I really want to see this.

Yeah, a bit of a bummer that their first two stories were about two of our favourite Js withdrawing . They say Jason should go, they should both go and sit in the stands together and the camera can cut to them every now and again.

Oh my gosh that'd be so cute!

Mini-mention of Josh in ice-dance.com's article about Joe and Karina:

“I really enjoy music," Johnson said. "I play the piano. Joshua Farris lives in the house and is an incredible guitarist and singer. We bounce melodies off each other or learn songs together.”

Thanks for sharing golden! We've seen Josh sing and play the guitar, but I have wondered if Josh had been studying music a bit since he was a lot younger.

I have been thinking about thread ideas for The Edge, but I haven't been sure of what could make some good conversations. One idea I had was the connection between some skaters studying music (especially a musical instrument) and their skating.

And not just the artistic side of skating - what about the technical side as well in being able to pull off difficult spins, footwork, and jumps? I know there have been studies on how students who study music have improvements in math and reading comprehension. The theory is that understanding music helps them be able to "break things down" in formulas and reading and see how little things "fit all together." This is just something I have been thinking about.

AFAIK the guitar thing with Josh is relatively recent - only a few years. IIRC he was also learning the piano at some point. He's been taking classes I believe. Jason has been playing the piano since he was itty bitty, though.

I think this has been posted before but I'll throw it in again.

Baby Joshua Intermediate SP (2008)

SO CUTE. Charlotte spiral into 2Lz-2Lo (pre-triple Josh!), spreadeagle into 2A, split jump into 2F, so adorable and cute and fierce.

And look who was going to skate next... ;)

EDIT:

And then Youtube threw me his FS from the same year, Henry VII, though this one is from Regionals.

2A-2A+SEQ, 3S-2T-2Lo, 3T, combo spin with Biellmann and I-spin, 3S-2T, 3Lo, 2Lz, flying combo spin with I or candle position, step sequence, flying sit spin to finish. And he's so tiny and excited and adorable! Oh my god, he was TWELVE! Probably not even twelve at this point!

Thanks for sharing, karne. While we are on the subject of favorite things about Josh from the past, I will put some photos on here.

The Sushi T-Shirt for a Warmup - Not sure if it's his favorite food or if it was a dig because it was the only thing he could find to eat there.
Joshua posing next to a ice cream cone - Another "joke" photo, perhaps?
Photo of him after his SP at 2013 Nationals - I think this was the first SP at Senior Nationals where he did really well.
2015 Nationals - Probably my favorite photo so far of Joshua and Jason. They look genuinely happy for themselves and each other.

Joshua was in a group photo of Christy Krall's skaters from what looks like a Nationals send off (posted by Courtney Kuhn): https://www.instagram.com/p/BApciIQHXhe/.

It was really kind to see him included (and smiling!) even though he has been off the ice this whole season. I have always liked that he started to grow his hair longer on top but it looks like now it is also longer along the sides. I sometimes thought before the 2014-15 season that his hair was a little too short for his face and having his hair a little longer made him look more mature.

Kind of reminds me of Max Aaron's hair last season at 2015 Nationals. Is it just me who thinks that?

Max had a LOT (I thought it was a bit much) product in his hair at 2015 Nationals. I also think Max's hair is actually naturally curly/wavy - It looks like Josh's hair is more loose in waves - it has definitely been straight at times when he was younger. Maybe it is working with products or some people's hair changes as they get older.

BTW, yes, I started out thinking about Max's and Josh's hair and moved on to spending thinking about a good number of the U.S. men - I can't decide whose looks the best right now. Now, excuse me while I sneak off in embarrassment. :slink:

Embarrassed because you thought about their looks so much? No reason for that, we love them for their skating, but if it comes with great looks, nothing wrong with enjoying them  and the US men are a very good looking bunch! Skaters are in general, I think.

And if we have to miss out on Josh's gorgeous skating, his gorgeous face with a gorgeous smile is at least a bit of comfort

Well, I found this year's men's competition at U.S. Nationals to have been very strange - both in the overall results and the commentary (Example: Tara and Johnny really shouldn't have talked about potential Nathan wuzrobbing after Ross skating making mistakes - Ross deserved more respect than that.)

But I was sad mainly cause if Joshua and Jason had been able to compete and skate well here, it would have been the most epic final flight for men in the history of U.S. Nationals. Sigh.

Assuming he is able to 100% recover and train like he is capable of, I just hope that Joshua is keeping positive thoughts about this if he wants to continue. Looking the short, long, and total scores and how Josh was scored at last year's Nationals, his total score was only 2.77 points lower than what Adam just won Nationals with. And was right there with Max and Nathan. And that was with Josh Zayaking that 2T. There's no reason why he couldn't be competitive next year in Kansas City if he was able to come back.

Sending positive thoughts to Joshua (and Jason). If he can get back on the ice at a decent time, he will have plenty of time that he needs to "recovery train" for next season.

I couldn't agree more. The only thing that worries me is that there will presumably be four top-notch young U.S. men: Jason, Josh, Max, and now Nathan. Who gets left off the team? Hoping with all my might that Josh can climb back up to the heights he deserves. I enjoy watching skating across the board, but every now and then there's a skater or a pair who just move me uniquely and powerfully. Josh is one of them, and I send every good wish his way :)

Would you include skaters like Adam Rippon and Grant Hochstein in the mix? Or do you think they will still be around?

If you go back historically, there had always been 4-5 men who on any given day would definitely make the World or Olympic team. And there really wasn't any wiggles room for mistakes. 2002 Nationals was particularly painful to watch Matt Savoie not make it to Salt Lake City. I was happy that Savoie got to compete in Torino, but seeing Michael Weiss and Timothy Goebel in the Kiss & Cry at 2006 Nationals was hard to watch.

The encouraging part is that assuming they can really come back, Jason and Joshua have only turned 21 at this point. They have (some) time - but not sure about 2022 time. Although, Jeremy Abbott was 24 in Vancouver and 28 in Sochi when he competed and Patrick Chan is 25 right now. And they are more "total package" skaters.

I keep feeling like Adam might retire soon, now that he's won gold, since he is starting to age a bit and seems inconsistent internationally. But who knows? I love Grant, but I can't see him beating a healthy Jason or Josh, let alone the current medalists.

I suppose it would definitely be better to have a deeper men's field- it's just hard to watch favorites fall by the wayside- I learned that the hard way yesterday in dance! That said, since this is Josh's thread, I do think he could definitely come back right into the midst of this pack of contenders- and nothing would make me happier than to see him at 2018 Olympics.

Going through this thread I remembered how much all of the messages of love and support from his fans meant to Josh this fall (per his tweet). It made me think that there might be some really tough days during his recovery, perhaps especially after seeing others compete at nationals. Just wanted to see what else we can do to keep his spirits up and continue to send him encouragements, positive vibes and love :hap10: :luv17: . Perhaps more twitter notes!? Anybody have any good hashtags we could try to get started? Or any other good ideas? (Plus it might help us fans cope a bit too :)

Oh yes, more Twitter messages! Though I doubt he is on social media all that much, he may not get them. Hmm. *thinks*

How about this: on the anniversary of his 4CC medal, we try to trend the hashtag #GiveJoshLove or something like that? We set a specific time frame to coordinate tweets to maximize the chances of trending and try to get some of the more widely followed outlets to pick it up- I bet something like TSL would report on its happening.

If you want everyone's tweets to show up at a specific time, have you considered organizing a Thunderclap? https://www.thunderclap.it/

(Disclaimer: I have never organized one. But AFAIK, it is a way to do exactly what you want to accomplish. And to drum up participants in advance.)

I like this idea, should it be the anniversary of his 4CCs medal? I need to check the date from 2015, but I don't want to do it if it's during the 4CCs this year. If we want to do it I want it to purely be about supporting Josh and not a distraction to the 4CCs that are going on.

How about waiting until Josh has announced on Twitter/Instagram some update about how he is doing - whether he has returned to the ice or what his plans are for next season? The way many people on here are about giving updates about their favorite skaters from social media, I think it would get posted on here pretty soon. :)
