State of Russian Men's Figure Skating 2015-2016

Gachinski and Kovtun both delivered very strong results at a very young age and Kolayada didn't. So there was no incentive to push Kolayda into seniors. And no free spots.

It may well have been a blessing in disguise. At least Mika (Kolyada) was not pushed to do quads before he was ready and didn't have to deal with the pressure Kovtun had to.

so what do u guys think of our men's chances at worlds against men who competed at these past US & Can Nats?
what are the prospects?

btw I know I know we should see how the Euros go 1st to think about worlds:biggrin:

I think we (Kovtun, Kolyada) can be quite competitive against Rippon with his fake 4lz. But if Max and Nathan show the same skating as in the nationals I am not sure if our men have good chances. They need to beef up the tech and manage to stay on the feet. Kolyada has impressive skating skills, outstanding 3A, gorgeous spins. He needs clean quads at least 1+2. Then with 3 clean 3As he can aim at 260+ and compete with the Americans for 5-6th place. I think Kovtun improved a lot pcs wise. But he is so unreliable - you never know when he falls or pops. If he shows the skate of his life he still will be far from the podium but he can challenge the Americans as his pcs will be likely higher.

I think the time of Voronov and Menshov is over. Competition has become too tough and they are very not young.

Oh...this is why I quit reading this thread. I feel like a fool every time I come back, just the same old negativity about the older skaters...

Nobody's time is over until they decide to retire.

I think if Kovtun is clean he will beat both Max Aaron and Nathan Chen. Aaron because Kovtun is actually a better skater/performer and Chen because he will be held back PCS wise by not being America's 1st and by still being a Junior as well. I mean, even at his own nationals he was really held down so internationally too probably.
i don't think Rippon will ever be a threat for 1st places (unless everyone has like a meltdown of abysmal proportions). Because the problem is his 4lz is not only a planned fall 4Lz, it is a planned fall 4Lz<< and the rest of his skating really is nothing special.
I don't know about Kolyada, I am waiting to see at Euros if he can be reliable or not.

I think the Russia fed. was trying to find someone to replace Plushenko (impossible I know!) when he was slowing down and jumped on the juniors who had the most success. They got pushed too soon, too fast, saddled with too much expectations and were never able to develop like they could have. They were never given the chance to ease in because they were pushed as senior #1 right out of the gate. It's like they went from step 5 to step 10 without finishing 6-9. Kolyada escaped all of that.

They do have charisma and they are good skaters. But this season I am tired to feel pity for them. Voronov had a great last season with some podiums earned. This season he already said himself: "it's over". And if the Fed tried to convince him to stay it was only because Kolyada was not on the screen yet. The judges also started to dismiss them. What happened at CoR was for me the same as for many people here were ladies in Sochi. But that's the fact - Voronov was lowballed and not elsewhere but in Moscow. Hence, with all due respect I cannot see him competitive any more.

Kolyada had no jumps and petrov has no level 4 spins or steps and no quad. Kovtun is barely second. Looks like state of israel much stronger than Russia.

Oh, how I love it when people hit the panic button before an event is even over :dbana:

Kolyada and Petrov are both young and in their first big international senior event, they were nervous, and that is fine. They still have LP to move up in the rankings, maybe they will.
And what did you expect Kovtun to be, 1st?

I'm not even that much interested in men and I don't care for Kovtun at all. But what do people expect of him? He landed two quads. His posture and skating skills aren't stellar, but they're not that bad. His sp isn't great art, but he made an effort to perform it (which is more than can be said for a few of the other men). His LP is fun IMO. I understand that there's a perception that he has been overscored in the past and perhaps that's true. But that's hardly his fault. Brezina fell on his only quad, so it's not like you can claim that him being behind Kovtun is some great injustice. And 88 points seems perfectly reasonable for what he showed. Idk, he did a decent job in the SP IMO and yet it's the same old grudges coming out against him no matter what he does.

Petrov was sick after returning from a training camp on the 11th. Nausea, dizziness and high blood pressure. He had only 3 days of full training before leaving for Bratislava.

Oh no, thank you for telling me, I didn't know. Poor guy, he did an amazing job regarding those circumstances. Hopefully he'll manage well in the LP too.

my poor puppy Misha
Im so sad for him:sad4:

On the other hand Im proud of Petrov!
I didn't care much for this prgramm but he perormed it amazingly & the crowd reaction was much better than I expected!

I really root for them to be mistake less today!

I feel very sorry for Sasha... I hope he's feeling any better now. He was very good yesterday despite the illness, but I also know he's much better than that. The nerves took Mikhail, but at the same time, he did prove plenty of what he's worth. And Maxim, he's so much improved! His 3A's not looking better this season but he's now a much more reliable skater.

I'm a bit scared to ask this, but I couldn't find the rules regarding the Euros spots for next year. Is it looking okay with Kovtun in the second place, or does Misha or Sasha need to move up to keep the 3 spots?

If I am not mistaken the sum of 2 should be 13. Meaning that if Kovtun is 2nd, Misha or Sasha can be as low as 11. But I am rooting for them in top 8! :)

IIRC, the magic number should be 13, so if Kovtun stays in 2nd one of them must place 11th or higher.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Figure_Skating_Championships#Qualifying

If the placements of the top two skaters sum up to be 13 or less then that nation receives 3 spots the next year. Kolyada and Petrov are at 9 and 10 and I have a hard time seeing any of the skaters behind them passing both of them so I think 9 is the baseline for one of the numbers. If Kolyada and Petrov don't move up any then Kovtun would need to be at least 4th for Russia to get 3 spots next year. The chances are favorable that Russia keeps 3 spots but I also wouldn't want to bet on it.

That really calms my nerve now. I believe they can move up at least a bit anyway, but I just hate to see them being blamed for losing the spots you know. Thank you!

Its ruining kloyada and petrov and all Russian men to be considered inferior to kovtun. Like I said before kovtun is male dornonina and it tells everyone that the Russian men's program is dead as long as he's champion. Kovtun has the worst euros medal of all time everyone knows its from tarasova lobbying. But her lobbying is not even worth beating a skater no one had heard of ever. Poor amodio. Losing to tarasova lobbying.
