Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I hope the first thing Shpilband is going to change is their twizzle sequence. It was just annoying to see how that change of edge prevented them to get a GOE higher than 1 or 2. They are actually amazing twizzlers, but their twizzles were constructed in a way, that was no way for the judges to give them a GOE of +3.

 One of the very first things I thought was 'oh thank god, he will fix the twizzles'.

I would say Ruslena should raise the bar and even do 5 twizzles intead of just the 4 the Shibs are doing :p

I think Igor may agree to do that, just to stick it to Marina ;) (I have no idea if there's still bad blood between them or not. Both are mature, professional adults who probably moved on long ago.)

By the way, I've been stalking this thread for the past two years, from the very beginning, but never got around to posting. I'm hopeful that this will be a good change for Elena and Ruslan. They both have ability and artistry in spades, IMO, and could do well with a coach who forces them to rise to the level of their abilities technically.

Let's be honest, if judges could give +2 and +3 to W&P, C&B, S&K but even PC, for sure Ruslena deserved some +3. Let's just say that their twizzles gave to the judges the justification they needed, sometimes, to give them poor GoE's.

The rsport blurb makes it sounds like it is a temporary thing with Shpilband. Not sure how I feel about a possible permanent switch at this point. I think they are just panicking. K/A were good coaches for them. A collaboration with Shpilband is great, I fully support it, but moving to the US full time to work with him? Not sure. K/A have strengths that Shpilband does not have and of course vice versa. I wouldn't say that Shpilband has more political clout than K/A. Also, Shpilband could use a boost right now, considering his top US team just got kicked off the top spot on the podium.

I will say that there is something to be said for being in the right environment that breeds success. Canton Michigan is a magnet for talent and the area breeds competitiveness and hard work, its the Harvard of ice skating...LOL... and the american system suits that kind of set-up.

I guess we'll have to see how it plays out for I/Z.

Shpilband is one of the most influential ice dance coaches of the past 10 years. He brought plenty teams to Olympic and World medals. The best Kustarova could do were two European silver medals. How come you think he hasn`t more political clout than Kustarova?

Regarding C/B, they still received higher PCS than the Shibs in the 4CC FD and that`s with the Shibs entering the competition as reigning National Champion.

I guess I am not sure that I group political clout with results necessarily.

I think Shpilband is a great coach, and his teams do well because he is a good coach, not necessarily because he is influential. When his teams don't perform well, they don't win.

That cannot be said for some other coaches whose teams still win whether they deserve it or not. That is political influence.

Panicking. No, cannot agree with you on this one. Completely sensible in my book. The only hope I/Z have of making the team is if they can swing the international judges to their side through Igor. That is how it works in Russia. You either produce the results or you're dumped. If you make improvements and are trained by a well respected coach, the odds of you making the team improve. Performing at Russian Nationals is a mere formality. There have been notable exceptions namely I/K in the Olympic year, but at that time the pickings were exceedingly slim. They are not at this time. The only other way they'll see the light of a WC or EC is to change federations and they haven't gone there, so I'm choosing to be optimistic. I'm a fan so I'm choosing to hope for their best. If Carmen was any indication this team has it in them to be spectacular :)

I guess I am just not sure that they were doomed or something, that's what I meant by panicking. I didn't really see how staying with K/A would be so detrimental to them. There are no guarantees they'll do better next year with a different coach. Maybe, maybe not.

If anything, I thought next year they had to have solid programs to get them back on track. Now, if they move permanently to Shpilband it is a whole new set of adjustments, that I am not sure they need right now. They could do one more year with K/A, get back on track, then go to Shpilband.

I think if they want to make a coaching change, now is the right time. It`s two years until the next Olympics and they have lost a lot of ground. I think with the right strategy they can get very far. I agree a coaching change isn`t a guarantee for success, just look how the coaching change for P/I worked out compared to H/D. But this season made it clear that something had to change and this trial period with Shpilband is a first step in the right direction, IMO.

I really just don't agree that k/A have anywhere near the clout politically that Igor has, and I frankly don't think they work hard enough to get better at that either.

I also don't agree that Ruslena are panicking. They had a season worse than their debut one and have to take a hard look at why. I am sure leaving K/A is hard for them, especially him. However they do want to break through. They know KA have never actually had a senior team break through. They know KA clearly were not proactive enough about helping them change their programs this year. While in other circumstances I would maybe say they could have stayed one more season to see how things go, if they didn't improve they'd be looking at a coaching change the year of the Olys which isn't ideal. Better to try this and if it works to have a season to settle before the Olympics season.

Also to be really in a good place for the Olympics they'll ideally start gaining momentum next year. They have to figure out what is most likely to help them do so.

Well, I guess they know what they're doing. I am always cautious of making too many changes all at once. Switching to Shpilband is a pretty big change. New coach, new system, new country... etc, not like moving from US to Canada. Not what I would have chosen to add to my rebuilding strategy.

But, maybe it will be a great motivator for them. And if it is just a collaboration that could work greatly to their advantage and maybe the overall change will be really good.

As I said, Canton is a great place, full of excellent teams, that is certainly a great training environment.

Except it's not in Canton, it's Novi.

If I had a choice, it would be Linichuk but she seems to have left coaching. But I guess they are doing the three months to see if they like living in suburban Detroit, sharing the ice with a lot of teams of similar level, and potentially having Trump as President (and in the horrifying event that happens, will he kick Ruslan out of the country for being a Muslim?).

On FSU morqet translated Elena`s interview and Igor sent them a schedule. Apparently, they are going to work with hip hop, ballet and lift specialists. Sounds very exciting.

With the SD being blues with optional hiphop next season, I am very excited for this, and think it is a good fit.

1. Ruslan & Elena seem to like more up to date music

2. Igor is in Novi, not Canton, but it is all Detroit area. And Detroit has plenty of hiphop on tap

3. And while Detroit ain't Chicago or the Delta, it has and has had a respectable blues scene.

Detroit Blues
Detroit blues is blues music played by musicians resident in Detroit, Michigan, particularly that played in the 1940s and 50s. Detroit blues originated when Delta blues performers migrated north from the Mississippi Delta and Memphis, Tennessee to work in Detroit's industrial plants in the 1920s and 30s. Typical Detroit blues was very similar to Chicago blues in style. The sound was distinguished from Delta blues by its use of electric amplified instruments and a more eclectic assortment of instruments, including the bass guitar and piano. The biggest Detroit blues performer to achieve international fame was John Lee Hooker, as record companies and promoters have tended to ignore the Detroit scene in favor of the larger, more influential Chicago blues. The Detroit scene was centered on Black Bottom/Hastings Street, a Detroit neighborhood.

I would love to see Elena and Ruslan or for that matter, any of Igor's and Fabian's students, do their SD to John Lee Hooker.

I'm actually beginning to worry, people really believe Trump can win this? :eekn:

After the most recent caucuses in South Carolina I think he really might get the nomination. I don't think he can win the actual election though. In any case (and I wish I was kidding but I am not) I am pretty sure Trump actually means the muslims who have brown skin and look 'scary' so Ruslan should be safe. I doubt Trump knows a white person can be a Muslim.

Sorry for the :otopic:

Merciful Father in heaven protect us all. To this day, I think its a hoax. I cannot take him seriously, totally impossible for me. I've only heard about his utterances from my mom who is glued to the coverage. Wow.

But yeah, I digress. :hijacked:

Sorry back to the kids. Thinking only good things.
