2015-16 State of Russian Ladies skating

Being a little rough on Lena on this board. Maybe she did not have the best of programs this year, but it's not like she failed all season long. Liza's programs this year and last year were worse than Lena's IMO. Not meant to be a attack on Liza because I like her. Just what I think.

Lena has struggled all season with her jumps that many thought she would lose, but she is so gritty she was in the mix to the end in every competition. She lost GOE because of issues with her jumps. First competition she has not medaled in two years. She is still my favorite Russian lady. Though Anna did pick up some points.

Liza needs someone else to help her pick programs. She needs to do something different, her stuff this year was awful.

Russia now has seven active World and Olympic singles medalists on their roster: Alena, Adelina, Julia, Liza, Elena, Evgenia and Anna. Add to that talented list Polina, who holds the junior record for combined total score, and you have perhaps the deepest national field ever.

No, they just failed to perform well this season. Nobody wrote them off.
Now, the fun thing is, if they were sent to Worlds ahead of skaters who actually deserved it by doing well at nationals, the very same people here would make a big scandal on how russian fed has their darlings etc etc etc

Yes, I think some people get the 'wrong idea' if they don't actually follow skating closely, since they see year after year it appears there's a new young Russian girl at the top or close to the top of the World podium. But it isn't like the Russian federation is intentionally throwing older skaters under the bus to make this happen which I think you honestly don't have to dig very deep at all to find proof of. The federation supports who is performing well, period, and doesn't prop up those who performed well last year (or need to because the field is SO deep). Just look at Tuktamysheva. In years when she performs well, she gets sent to major competitions; in years when she doesn't she does not. However, before last year people were writing her off, saying the Russian federation had written her off and so on. The second she started to perform well again the federation supported her fully. Next year, if she starts performing well again, they'll support her fully too.

They also even send skaters who are struggling to MANY competitions to try to help them improve their performance and their scores. Leonova was sent to more B's than almost anyone this year, and 'underperforming' skaters like Artimieva who are sort of hanging around the very very bottom of the top tier and don't really have a prayer of getting sent to Euros or Worlds still get a lot of international assignments. Tukt also continued to be given as many assignments as she wanted this year even once it was abundantly clear she wasn't going to get her last years form back.

Basically I just do not buy that the federation holds any of the ladies back intentionally or unintentionally. To the contrary I think all their top ladies are given a fair chance, and those that can perform the best go to Worlds and Euros, period. That it isn't the same people year after year is a sign to me that the system is working, not that it isn't.

I wonder, if the US had all these skaters, if the USFSA would have sent Liza to Worlds instead of Anna based on "body of work". Anna was not good on the GP and won bronze at her Nationals. Liza bombed Nationals but was the WGM, had a GP medal and won a bunch of early season events.

Yup. Oh well, i just get annoyed because of the constant whining about skaters being written off.
It is like accusing american fed of holding back their 3th-6th places at nationals, by sending the medalists to major events instead. I mean, why didnt they sent Hanna, Karen and Courtney instead - they obviously wrote those ladies off.

I suspect the US would have gone with its podium finishers and sent Anna The only tImes I can recall them not going with the podium from Nat has been an Olympic year and either involved an injury such as Nancy Kerrigan or Ashley Wagney replacing Mirai for 2014 based on her body of work and that she been a factor in securing the three spots for US ladies.

Yes, sorry Stephan Lambiel but you can't teach the exactly same type of movements for every skater pretending they are all the same. In his defense, i think this year the choreo seemed ugly and flat because the layouts were very demanding and Liza got tired, so in order to not sacrifice the technical side they have simplified the choreography.

I was excited to see what she was going to do after last season. I think this year was too similiar in style to last year. She needs something that helps her express the program not the boring music she has been getting. Also that costumes this year were horredous.

No way for Adelina or Yulia (sorry for them) as they had already accomplished their Missions and are being written off (in terms of medal hunt for russia's fed).

I wouldn't count Yulia or Adelina out just yet. Adelina needs to proove herself but after a year back in she could come out swinging this fall. Yulia has changed coaches and looks like a different skater now. Those girls could very well bounce back to the top.

She does not need to prove anything - she has got Olympic gold and that's it (no need to skate anymore in competitions as it would lower the level of glory)! The same goes for Yulia. They made history but we are talking about the present and up to 2018 - so among current set-up the most chances go to Anna or Polina, Russia needs an OGM in ladies and since their system's highly geared towards youth skaters there should be a young champ.

Felt like chiming in with my Russian Ladies wishes for next season:

1. For the top "older" skaters (Adelina, Yulia, Liza, etc) to regain their previous form
2. More great programs from Adelina and Evgenia
3. Better programs for Elena and Liza
4. For Elena and Evgenia not to lose their jumps
5. For Alisa to dominate juniors :cheer:
6. For Maria to make a splash as a senior :cheer2:
7. For the glorious return of Sochi-Type Yulia
8. For anyone who is super inconsistent to surprise us by getting great programs, gaining consistency, and WINNING ALL THE THINGS :dance3:
9. For someone new to burst onto the scene-senior or junior, I don't care-and bonus points if I start ubering them

Don't know why I felt the need to write that, but I did. It's a little early, but I think Off-Season Allergies to start kicking in...I am allergic to long stretches of no skating and it adversely effects my brain

Their system is highly geared towards skaters who win.
The fed will not send Adelina anywhere just because she has an OGM in her cv, unless she performs well enough now. They will just send whoever performs better now.

I don't think Stephane is to blame. Mishin just doesn't seem to care about choreo and waters down the programs to the point of unrecognizability. If you heard Stephane's interview with TSL, they asked him how similar the program was to the one he created for her and he said "Well, she kept the music..."

There is much that I admire about Mishin, but his taste in programs only seems to get worse as time goes on.

Personally, I really like this system. I can definitely understand putting some value to past merits, but I myself have much more respect for a system where the person who performs the best right now gets sent to the most prestigeous competitions, period. This way you give every newcomer a fair chance and don't play favorites. No matter your past merits, you have to prove that you are capable right now at this very moment.

2014-2015 FS was great: i mean, it was always entertaining for the crowd, she liked it a lot (especially the footwork sequence) and it was her own style, so mature and different from the other skaters and i respect that.

That's exactly what i said, they simplified the choreography in order to not sacrifice her jumps.

I remember at Russian open skates the original versions of these programs, his style of skating is so different from Liza (if you remember that interview, he also said that he was trying to teach new movements for her but she wasn't able to replicate it), looking at 2014-2015 season i'm still thinking that she doesn't need a Lori Nichol program, but just something easy and entertaining.

Marin Honda is so overrated to me: at GPF she wasn't better than Alisa Fedichkina, her third place is absolutely questionable as well as the World Champion where she won just because Polina WD the competition. (i don't even think she was better than Sotskova but i gave it to her just because everyone wanted so desperately her victory to ends up the Russian dominance)
I honestly think (even at this very moment) she is bigger threat to Russians for 2018, than any other skater in the world. I doubt, that in two years Satoko is gonna jump higher, Gracie solves her competitive psyche, Ashley improves her TES and Mao revives her 3A, both at ~27.
Meanwhile Marin, who is already a total package at 14, is going to develop into true PCS monster at 16, worshipped by Japanese fans and adored by rest of the world, even yourself (oh yes, I'm reading Russian forums, where people express their respect and love to her, calling her "Marinka"!)
Plus I don't think puberty is gonna hit her hard, imo she's undergoing it already in a long-term, rather gentle way.

If I played a board game "Russian ladies road for 2018 gold" today and got special bonus of removing one enemy unit from the board, I would definitely reach for Marin Honda pawn. :)

I disagree at least on Yulia - from what was said when she moved to Urmanov in Sochi, it was worked out for her to have funding through the 2018 Olympics...If the Fed was writing her off or not wanting/having her in the medal hunt, I doubt they would help her move to Sochi for training.
