Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani | Page 47 | Golden Skate

Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani

It seems Coldplay is happy to have their music identified with skating by the Shibs. Maia and Alex were invited to attend a concert and meet the band this summer (according to a reporter's tweet from the Pre-Worlds Press conference)

Cool to see some high quality brands have their eye on the Shibs. Some gifts and attention. Maia and Alex embody quite a few attractive qualities in my opinion. Beauty, quality, resilience. Nice to see ice dancers attracting some more attention (not just singles skaters) for a change.

I admit I was a little sad that they didn't have a complete Cinderella story, but then someone on GS stated that why does this have to be the end of their comeback story? It's true. This page of their career is only beginning, and unlike some other teams who get the favored judges'/fan/forum pet treatment, the Shibs has had to earn all their accolades the hard way. Those PCS and GOEs they received this season did not come easy at all and the judges are still reserving the best scores from them. The Shibs haven't gotten any favors so any future and possibly surprising success will be due to their hard work rather than being an anointed one.
VietgrlTerifa, I love your posts about dance, and especially the Shibs! I saw their FD in Boston and it was electrifying. I have to admit to feeling disappointed when they didn't win (despite being a big fan of P/C too), so I embrace your perspective that this is just the beginning of their comeback:clap:

I can accept the fact that they came in second, it's hard to accept that their FD scores were 5 points behind P/C's. I was there to see both programs and they were apples to oranges (I personally preferred our Shibs' Fix You and the twizzles - the best twizzles of the night). The judges were handing out points like candies all night long - not only to P/C but also to other teams - happy for H/D though - but when it came to the Shibs the judges were quite "stingy" :dev2:. I'm happy for their silver medal and it was very well deserved.

Thanks! I understand the mixed feelings. The Shibs are my favorite team, so of course I was disappointed when they didn't win gold even though I would have been thrilled with this result this time last season. I guess this is what happens when expectations are raised, and they were raised because the Shibs simply could not be denied any longer. That said, I LOVE Papadakis/Cizeron and understand why they won. I think Maia and Alex have it in them to close the gap. This isn't the first gap they had to close ;). Look at what they did with PCS from Nepela (placing third in PCS behind Gilles/Poirier and Coomes/Buckland) to Worlds (second in the whole world). I don't know any other team who was able to do that after being relegated to afterthoughts. That was pretty much a miracle.

I saw that Maia and Alex tweeted that they are back in the U.S. and NYC after a "grueling" week. I wonder if they went off country to choreograph a new show program for Stars on Ice, which starts on the 15th.

I am so pleased for the Shibs silver medal win at worlds. So many people wrote them off when they still had so much to give, and finally, their time has come. They are the definition of perseverance! Finally they have come into their own and broke away from the shadows of D/W and C/B. I can see them being the number 1 US team next year as well, and I think if they keep it up they very well will be in the mix for an Olympic medal.

I bet Alex was so excited to win this medal in the city he was born!

All your photos are gorgeous RadSotnikhanovich. My favorites are Maia gliding alone on the ice in her SD costume, Maia skipping during the SD, and the two of them in the spotlight during the medal ceremony. Thank you so much!

Busy busy busy ...

After Alex's IG implied they were hard at work outside the US somewhere training something (new show program?) immediately after Worlds and performing on the TODAY show and attending a soiree celebrating their season in NYC, they are back in NYC

Maia and Alex backstage at the TODAY Show.
They skated at Rockefeller last week. Today it looks like they just get invited to "hang out" #BFFs with NBC
