He could do all quads solo. That's where the great advantage of having 3 different quads lies. E.g: 4lo, 4T, 3F // 4S, 3Lz-3T, 3A-3Lo, 3A-1lo-3S, 3Lz. Hell of a layout it would be. If he wanted, he could later switch 3lz-3t to 4S-3t and have 4 quads/7 triples. Provided the effort wouldn't kill him and he'd actually achive stability with it which looks like a tall order.

That said, yeah, I don't know how feasible 3A-3Lo vs. 3Lz-3Lo is either.

That layout sounds scary!

You are right! I forgot that 3Lz3T +3A3T is zayaking. But he can also opt for 3Lz1lo3S. Or he could also do 3Lz3Lo 3A3T and 3A-1Lo-3S instead of 3Lz3T/3A3Lo. This seems to be like a feasible idea, it probably would be less taxing than a quad combo too hahaha. If one of his quad is in a combo he could have an emergency quad when things go not as planned too

EDIT : actually 3Lz3Lo combo is not that odd/scary. Many ladies did it before. From Team Japan Mao attempted it. Wakaba and Marin are also capable of doing it. Miki Ando had it too in her layout. I think 3Lz3Lo combo for Yuzuru is more of a problem because his 3Lz has been iffy as of lately.

So many possibilities!

It does, doesn't it? I don't know if it's doable in real life, even for Yuzu!

I know this probably has been posted before, so apologies beforehand.
But looking at the statistics of his jumps it is still amazing to look at the consistency of his 3A!
Almost 92%! It has higher consistency than some of ladies+men triple jumps it is unbelievable.
This is also the reason even though I love seeing Men do quads so so much, it is also so important to have a solid and consistent 3A. Many junior kids focus too much on the quads and they neglect the 3A, ending up not having a solid 3A jump. Eventually they lose points in both SP and FP cause they failed their 3As. Since it is a required element in SP, go get your 3A straight first before doing quads, kids

So many possibilities!
Only by adding a 4Lo!

I don't know @mcq because I didn't read this forum and this thread up to 8th months ago, so for me this "skate DB" is new and it looks very interesting and useful: thank you so much for having linked this :).

It looks like Yuzuru is very consistent not only in the 3A = 91,9%, but in the 3Lo = 90,9% and in 3S = 87% , too (and we know also with what kind of quality !).
Notable even his statistics being compared with those of Javier and Patrick. In fact, he seems more consistent than them in the 4T, 3A, 3Lo, 3S; moreover he has been more consistent of Javier also in the 3Lz and the 3T, while they have the same percentage in the 3F.
On the contrary Javier beat slightly in consistency Yuzuru only for the 4S, while Chan is far more consistent of them both in 3Lz and in 3F.

I made also an image of comparison with the three statistics, but I have not find a way to post it here: it is possible or not? And in that case, through which button? Thank you all in advance for any indications you will give me on this matter.

Unfortunately it's not possible to post pictures to the forum directly. You would have to upload the picture somewhere else and then you can link to it here.

Thank you for the answer @Pamigena :). What a pity: in other fora in which I post (about different subjects) this is possibile, and it is better since the images stay in the thread, while in external sites with time they can be removed, or also the link could not work properly anymore. More, I don't have an other site to post them.
Anyway the data are available in the DB linked by mcq, so in this case is not a big loss (was just useful look at them next to another on the same page).

Following you, why Yuzuru has been less consistent in the 3F and then the 3Lz?

You can upload it to imgur or something and link it here. I think that is the only way.
This website also has a rank of best element with the highest GOE like for example 4S, 4T, 3A, 3Lz, Stsq. You can see that Yuzuru has the highest GOE given for most of this element (except for Stsq i think). Javier and Patrick has a few +3 GOE too, namely 4S and 4T for Javi and 4T for patrick.
Unfortunately the website only rank per season's. However another website rinkresults also rank best elements based on GOE for all seasons. However you can only sort up to top 50 i think.

EDIT : actually you can also rank elements for all season too from skateDB. Just change the term on search bar to --- (I only find out now )

Following you, why Yuzuru has been less consistent in the 3F and then the 3Lz?
For 3Lz, his inconsistency only starts by 14/15 season i think, where he failed many of his 3 Lz (including this season). That is why he still has about 72% success rate, since it is the consistency stretch for his entire career. For his 3F it is because in his early senior career he always get an edge call so that gave him -GOE. I am not sure but I guess the website only count landed jumps with no edge call (and perhaps only positive GOE). His 4S also has low success rate but that is because he barely lands them in 12/13 and 13/14 season.

Thank again @mcq :). Yes, I knew rink results, very interesting and functional too!
No doubt about the +GOE: I think that are so evident ...at least for not biased judges. What is amazing for me is really the naturalness and the quality of the most part of the Yuzuru's jumps.

And thank you also for the explanation about the percentage of 3Lz and 3F (for the 4S i didn't asked because I had realised what you wrote then). Do you have a technical or other type of explanation for the increasing inconsistency of the 3L in the last seasons? Just because as solo jump it is left at the end of the FP , when the fatigue prevails on the strenght of Yuzu?

Well, in the SP, he really struggled with the 3Lz+3T combination last season and up until SC this season, I think he had a hard time getting the timing right and sometimes rushed through it. I think that the inconsistency in the FS is a combination of fatigue (since, as you said, it's his last jump) and his technique on the 3Lz. Yuzu has almost, if not entirely, zero pre-rotation for his Lutz, so it's harder to land it. But I think it improved this season, I can only recall him falling on it at SC and putting a hand down at Worlds, the rest were all landed  Still, I think he must have a certain degree of comfort on the 3Lz to have it as his final jump in such a killer layout.

Scores in figure skating are quite manipulative. Skaters who are favored will get more generous GOEs and skaters who are not favored will get more stingy GOEs even if the latter has better quality and difficulty. It's actually not accurate to just take the face value of GOEs and compare the GOEs of different skaters because these GOEs can be "massaged" by the judges. It's better to compare the skaters' performances, but not the scores. The only thing you can fairly compare is compare Yuzu's own GOEs across different seasons to see if his jumps have improved. (The comparison is not that accurate either because GOEs also get inflated over time. But Yuzu's jump quality in general also improves over time.)

Yuzu rarely fails his 3F. He only failed at the Olympics and 2012 SA. But he got a lot of edge calls on 3F in the past, so his GOE is low.

I remember someone in this forum calculated Yuzu's jump success rate using the real success rate (I can't remember who did it. But the poster didn't use the GOE to measure jump success, but actually checked whether he actually landed the jumps successfully). That gives a more accurate assessment of his jump success rate.

He struggled with 3Lz in the 2014-2015 season because he always messed up the timing of 3lz-3t in the SP. For some reason, the 3lz-3t didn't work with the Chopin music. Other than the 3lz in the SP last season, his 3Lz success rates in past seasons are quite normal. I don't think his 3lz in the LP are inconsistent. He landed most of the 3Lz in the LP. But the quality of the 3lz at the end of the LP may not be as good. Not sure if his 3lz success rate improved over time.

Thank you very much for posting this! I was impressed that he had such amazing performances at NHK and GPF, despite the pain that was getting worse. And then he chose to do these two charity shows in January in Japan, even though it required him to take steroids and painkillers and a 10-days rest afterwards! And then at Worlds he did manage to jump a clean 4T and a clean 3T in combo with 3A, despite having a swelled up, painful toe and not having slept for two nights. I think it's no wonder if there are people who think he's superhuman :).

@xibsuarz, @gysz, thank you for your answer and your considerations about the matter :thank:.
I agree about the problems comparing of the GOE and of the scores of different skaters and in different competitions (i.e. sorry, but I don't think that the performance for the FP of Javier at WC that earned 10 in CC and interpretation was better than of Yuzuru's FP at the NHK, where under these categories he didn't reach that score...).

About the statistics of consistency I thought was different though, because I imagined they have to be based on falls and consequent deductions (no question of different opinons about them), or negative GOE for evident edge calls. Anyway, I am not sure about that because it is not clearly stated on that site (or I didn't find it).
For me it was interesting because, you know, among some commentators there is this opinion that Yuzuru is unpredictable in term of consistency, while looking at those statistics it seemed to me that he is no less no more than others, also if you think to the speed and the difficult entries that he usually has on his jumps.

I am looking forward to see what it will happen next season with the new programmes and the probable introduction of 4Lo :).

NEWS

Fusosha, the publishing company of Yuzu's Blue Flame II, is promoting the book in major newspaper. The highlight is on the bottom right corner: "This book gets big hit, and reprints before selling started." - Echo Cheng @YHIFG FB

Huge display in one of the bookstores #1, #2, #3, #4 (source)

A sneak peek of a page....first time I've seen that Requiem photo , someone need to draw that.

A fan (Angelica Yuzu) said there are so many beautiful photos and many that she has not seen before and quite a lot of him in bermudas . Definitely a good buy even if you don't understand Japanese. Especially as Yuzu is donating his royalties from the book and the publisher is also donating part of the sale proceeds to Ice Rink Sendai. It is available online at Amazon Japan and deliver worldwide.

Support for Ice Rink Sendai is another issue close to his heart as his fellow skaters depend on local rinks to train. Yuzuru has twice experienced losing his home rink. The first time was in Dec 2004 when it closed due to operating difficulties. It re-opened in 2007 after Shizuka won the OGM and pushed the local government into action. TV news covering the re-opening and interviewing 12 years old Yuzu (@1:03min) on his thoughts. The second time was due to the earthquake in March 2011 and he performed in about 60 ice shows over that summer to secure ice time. - credit @nanoka12 tumblr.

Blue Flames II is sold over 100,000 copies now
The book is also placed 4th at Oricon weekly sales ranking in book category.

This is a huuuge number, especially for the sports category and figure skating.

The source ..this fan went to Phiten seminar in Osaka on July 2, the general manager of the company mentioned Yuzu is scheduled to have a meeting with them in August. Yuzu is a contracted advisory to Phiten since 2014 summer - shared by EchoCheng at FB

Was there a news clip with this part: https://twitter.com/msmf40239/status/751672461322629120 ? What is he saying about Yuzu?
My translation: 'From when he was small he could think very clearly. He could say with clarity what he could do and what he coludn't do. And for the things he coludn't do, he was a kid who was able to practice at it with his whole being."

Yuzu's video message at faoi Nagano (June 23-25) was aired today!

He had ana outfit! I don't remember well, but the translation of this message was already posted (alia or someone?)? If anyone finds it, post please!

Google can be the most hilarious thing in the world. I tried to find this picture with google image search. Here's what I got . thanks for the suggested search word, google, I'll take that under advisement

Everyone, so am I, seems to be hungry for real Yuzu now.

Yesterday, a special TV drama "Doctor X" broadcasted in Japan. This drama series was popular, although I did not like it so much as it was a bit unrealistic to me. But, this time, the patient in the drama was a figure skater (he can jump 4A!!), and the model seemed to be Yuzuru. I could not resist to see it

http://xxhuyuzero.jp/2016/07/04/post-15710/

There were a lot of jokes/quips afterwards, such as,

- The way he fell is so weird.
- Too slow before the jump. He can never make 4A with such speed!!
- Look at that face while jumping!! No way!
- That combination of shoes and blades (EDEA Motivo and MARK IV) is not the one for a medalist.
- His costume seems to be too loose (actually it resembled the one Mitsuki Sumoto wore last season)
- The second place is "Javier Adriano - Spain"
- The final score is 329.47. Slightly less than Yuzuru's score!!
- Someone made the protocol !!

And, so on and so on.

Fans seem to have enjoyed the drama very much
We are really starved for real Yuzu

A Chinese fan made this assignment table for men.

And ladies.
Thank you

He's been landing it in official galas since post-Oly season and he has shown it in various summer/winter ice-shows over the years (a small collection here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_Y2L6E6DDI )

According his latest autobiography, he considered long and hard to put 4Lo in both his programs in Boston since his consistency on 4Lo was better than on his 4T in the months/weeks going to WC, but he opted out because he didn't think 4Lo was ready yet quality wise (ready in Yuzu sense, I guess: which means doing it with the most difficult entry you can think of...).

As for his shape right now, there's really no much to know for certain: just to keep fingers crossed he has fully healed.

TRANSLATIONS

Angelica Yuzu‎'s translation for Yuzuru Hanyu International Fan Group
As I said I would do, I translated the main parts of the last chapter of Aoi Hono II: World Championships 2016.
The first part on his injury is paraphrased. After that is proper translation of parts.

About his injury-- briefly summarised by me from his direct speech:

It started as a discomfort at the end of October, just before Skate Canada. There was numbness when he jumped toeloops. But it went away after 3 or 4 jumps. He gave it some care but did not see it as major because it went away with more movement. At NHK Trophy, it had become a pain and got worse over time and was pretty bad at Nationals (Dec).

After Nationals, he rested for 10 days, and then he did ‘NHK Trophy Special Exhibition’ (Jan 9, Morioka) and then ‘New Year On Ice’ (Jan 16, 17, Osaka).

[My own notes about these 2 ice shows from past articles I had saved:
1) NHK Special Ex– This show was hosted by NHK and proceeds were donated to the Tohoku Earthquake reconstruction efforts.
2) NYOI– 17 January is the anniversary date of the Great Hanshin Earthquake (also known as the Kobe earthquake) which happened 21 years ago. 21 year-old Yuzuru skated ‘The Final Time Traveler’ which is the song written specially for the Hanshin earthquake.]

Before ‘New Year On Ice’, he went to the hospital and had a steroid injection and also took painkillers. After the show, he rested totally for 10 days, but after that, the pain was still there.

At its peak, even walking was painful. The inside of his big toe hurt so much that he started to walk with his ankle turned out. Because of walking in this strange way, other places started to hurt as well.

At the end of Jan, even though it was painful, he could still do the salchow. But soon, he was falling on more and more jumps. It was most painful for the toeloop, then later, there was also pain for the axel, salchow and flip. Only the loop was not painful, so he practised a lot of that and thought of adding a quad loop at Worlds. But in the end, he was falling even on the triple loop. Mid-February, he thought he had to withdraw from Worlds and was in despair.

He had planned to go to Toronto at the end of January but because of the pain, he only went back there at the end of February. It started to get better bit by bit with treatment in Toronto. Except for toeloops, all the other jumps started to come back and his “can-do” spirit also returned. The doctor that was treating him ordered a “toeloop ban” on him, so for 3 weeks he just practised with the other jumps. 2 weeks before Worlds, he did the quad toe for the first time and managed to jump it in a day, but it felt different.

Although the pain still remained, his jumps had returned and he was in good spirits.

At World Championships:

March 27, he arrived in Boston. The next day was the first practice.

“The 1st day’s practice was good. But from the 2nd day’s practice, my body did not work well. […] Even when I took a painkiller, the pain in my left foot was still there. And my lower back started to hurt. Within that anxiety, there was a matter with another skater. As such, it was a mess inside my head. Various kinds of stress arose and I knew very well that my mental state was dragged away in a different direction. A short program that “there’s no way you can do it in this condition”, but it was clean. (laughs)”

His SP score was 110.56, only 0.39 points short of his own world record at GPF. However, after the SP, his foot got worse and swelled up badly.

“Before the practice on the day of the free programme, I took a painkiller and confirmed that I could jump a quad toeloop even though it’s painful. Because my adrenaline was still running, I was in a constant state of excitement, and those 2 nights before the FP, I could not sleep.”

When he drew turns for the FP at Worlds and he got 2nd to skate, he thought, “ah, I, am finished.” Because he has not had much experience of having good results with 2nd to skate. He has not yet found a good rhythm for skating 2nd.

His mind and body was not yet put in order and he faced the free skate. [………]

“World Championship was really hard. Between the short and the free, the temperature was about 10 degrees different and the ice was melting, but people who can jump, can jump. My body was not in a condition to adapt to all kinds of ice, my mental state was also fluctuating all the time.”

[…….]

“Being 2nd at World Championships, last year I was so regretful and felt very gloomy about it. This year (about a month before Worlds), I kept dreaming about being 2nd in various competitions (laugh), there was not a single dream where I was first. So, when Worlds ended, even though I was really regretful, my mood was refreshed.

Thinking about it again, for last season (2014-2015), what I achieved was I recovered from my injuries (from CoC) and I was restored; that is the impression I have in my mind. This season, I got world record scores, and for the first time, I gave something perfect from within myself at a competition. It’s an important season that gave me a sense of accomplishment.

And also, my exhibition was good. I could put a lot of my feelings into it. The period before this Worlds, I did a lot of polishing on areas related to expression. Because of the pain in my foot, on-ice training was limited. So I practised on land, things like hand movement, ways of putting in emotions, the direction of the legs. For the ‘Requiem of Heaven and Earth’ at Worlds, I could put my feelings into it very well, my body and feelings were in harmony, and I was also one with the music. I finished the performance feeling refreshed.”

During practice for the exhibition, “Ahhh, if I skate this way, it is good,” he found a suitable way to skate on that ice and the skating felt good.

“Although in the end it took about 2 months, at that point in time before Worlds, it was decided that ‘due to the condition of my foot, I will not skate for one month after the competition ends’. ‘Must stay away from skating totally’. As such, with the thought that I cannot skate for one month from now, it was an exhibition where I really felt the joy and pleasure of skating.” […..]

“I think I first skated ‘Requiem of Heaven and Earth’ at Fantasy On Ice in Kanazawa. Many voices said "the Requiem at that time was so painful, it was heart-breaking”.
In fact, I had cried in practice, it was too painful. Especially when I was trying to link with the music completely, the moment I listened to the music, images of the disaster floated to mind…… I felt as if the pain at that time was depicted through me, it was very painful.” [……]

“ ‘My own happiness, it’s in skating’, ‘There is no joy except for skating’, there were times when I thought to that extent. At the start of January, my foot was in pain, and added to that, there were false news reports which made me rather distrustful of people.
(My own note: one terrible gossip mag said he was getting married and rumours spread.) Because of this situation, I was very happy that I could skate in a show. Skating is something done only by my own will. It is a place where no one else can interfere. At that time, I thought about many things. As such, it’s a program with deep meaning for me, ‘Requiem of Heaven and Earth’.”

He talks a bit about this recent season’s skating and jumps in the men’s field, and ends this part by saying he almost did a quad axel at Dreams On Ice and he is still studying how to do it. And “there are no quint jumps yet, but maybe Boyang might be able to do them. (laugh)”

“For men’s figure skating, now is the hottest period, isn’t it? For me, Salt Lake City was still the best Olympics and it was the trigger that started me thinking seriously that “I want to skate!”. In a certain meaning, that kind of time has come again, or it has become that kind of flow and I myself am in it. I am so happy. Until Pyeongchang, how much can I evolve, that will be my challenge from now. I am looking forward to it.”
[this is his last quote in this chapter]

Given that 3A is his forte, I wonder if he ever thought about it.
But then has he ever jumped a second 3L combination?

I saw someone mentioned that he tried 3Lz3Lo combo a few times before during practice runthrough before competitions. Not sure about the success rate/quality

Some people here said he practiced -3lo combination last season, it was on practice videos from, eh, I'm not sure, Autumn Classic? Worlds? both? but I don't know which combination it was and apparently he fell on it. But if this was something fairly new he was trying, then falling wouldn't have meant it was impossible for him.

Yuzu's 3Lz3Lo

EDIT:
Sorry! 3Lz2Lo. Was scrutinizing to make sure the first jump was a lutz and failed to give the loop much thought.

OR he apparently doubled the 3lo...

Still this combination looks sooo pretty! :luv17: If Yuzu can't get around having a double jump in a combo, 3lz-2lo can stay! Although his 2T with hands up is lovely as well, hard choice!
