Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

Lol? I'm not the biggest fan of DW programs but Yuzu has always said he liked him. And I don't think DW is exactly short on skaters wanting to work with him.

DW sounded like he really wanted to work with Yuzuru again in his interview. He is not short of skaters wanting to work with him, but he is short of star skaters and Yuzuru is currently the biggest star in figure skating. (Choreographers do want to work with stars because many of them do want fame and there are so few stars in figure skating.)

Not every collaboration works well. It's true both of Yuzuru's DW programs were not very well received. There is no need to force every collaboration to be successful. There is only one season left before the Olympics season. Either of his SP or LP next season may be re-used in the Olympic season if he doesn't have time to design and learn two new programs before the Olympics. It's too much of a risk to let DW choreograph a competition program knowing that the new program may be re-used in the Olympic season, his past DW programs were not well received whereas his programs created by other choreographers are well received.

Yuzuru hasn't had any real Ex programs for the past 3-4 years. He just re-used his old competition programs or the summer ex programs in competition gala. I think he just doesn't have time to specifically create a EX program. But this year, he missed the ice shows, so he didn't learn any summer ex programs either. So it's not a bad idea to let DW choreograph his EX program next season when DW expressed the wish to work with him. (He doesn't need to re-use ex programs in the following season.)

Yeah, the fact that I saw Shae-Lynn's name on so many skaters' programs this upcomings season has been worrying me a bit. There's this tiny voice at the back of my head asking whether she will have enough time to create another masterpiece for Yuzu and if it will be special enough. But then I answer myself that Jeff Buttle has been selling like hotcakes too and it hasn't stopped him from creating masterpieces for Yuzu, so fingers crossed for Shae-Lynn!

I think one of Shae's great strength as a choreographer is that she can bring out the character and personality of the different skater she worked with. Last season, for example, Yuzuru's seimei and Wagner's program has been doing well and were well-received so of course she would have more and more skaters interested in working with her. I would not be so worried until I see the programs with my own eyes. And yes as you said, Buttle is also high-demand but he can still choreographed great programs for Yuzuru

I'm always tempted to make mockup costume sketches for Yuzu but I find it interferes with my enjoyment and shock of actually seeing what chooses to wear every year.

He is more of a grown up man in terms of both physique and looks. RJ2.0 suits the 19-year-old Yuzu, but probably won't work for him now.

He didn't change that much. He's wiser now, that's for sure. But his delicate programs and costumes are still great suit for him. Just saying. Yuzu is Yuzu, not Brad Pitt.

Shae is getting more and more client as well this season, she choreograph so many programs for many skaters. One reason why seimei was so great was because she seems to put a lot of time in constructing the choreo. she watched the onmyoji movie, researching on Japanese traditional dance and the movement as well as noh theatre from her interview, if I recalled correctly. I can't really imagine this could be done to each skaters if you have like 20 skaters who you need to choreograph.

It's not like she gets Seimei kind of material each time. Most of the times choreographers have to dig into the same old stories and music and try to create something new from, say, bread and butter.

I think that Yuzu puts a lot of effort into creating his programs with choreographers too. Shae-Lynn said that too in her interviews. He learns a part and then has a moment on his own and brings something new. When the program is skated as a given product- it's one thing, when it is co-created with the skater and owned by him or her- it's a completely different kind of story. He's very artistic and very expressive, just when you look through his competitive (and non-competitive) pictures- he is always intense and intriguing.

I think DW really wanted to work with Yuzuru so Yuzuru gave him another chance. But I don't think Yuzuru wants to risk his competition programs with DW any more.

Yuzuru did say he wanted to skate to Jazz, but not in competition. So his ex is probably going to be Jazz.

To be fair, Brian used to think of Yuzuru as that strange kid carrying around a stuffed toy. Yuzuru wasn't like most of the people they'd seen before.

David is a nice sweet guy who has hit and miss programs like most choreographers out there. If Yuzuru chose him to choreograph a program, even if it's an exhibition, then we should be happy they are getting along.

And David will never lack for students. He's been in the biz for ~20 years and has choreographed for some of the biggest stars - Takahashi, Kim, Virtue/Moir, Buttle, etc. That kind of track record doesn't disappear easily.

Some choreographers work well with one skater, others with another, personally I liked David works for Takahashi better than Shae-Lynn, Garden of souls is the one of the best programs ever, imho...on the other hand Shae definitely works better with Yuzu. Jeff Buttle has done lots of amazing programs but last year program for Nam was a hot mess...also I can't say that I was a huge fan of Mura's program too.
on the other hand Yuzu and Jeff are like dream team. Lori is well respected choreographer but she doesn't fit Satoko , on the other hand Dickson does amazing job with her... how about Lambiel's choreo for Tukt? wasn't it a real mess? Imo it depends on chemistry between choreographer and a skater ...just this.
Yeah I have earbleed when I listen to Yuzu's ND weird music cuts but .. David has some really great programs. Truth should be said.

Nobody said Yuzu is Brad Pitt. PatricksGaze said Yuzu is not Brad Pitt.

That said, I think RJ2 costume would still suit him. If he looks natural in the Requiem costume, he could pull off RJ2 as well, the difference in the body is small enough. But that's a moot point since I really doubt he'll ever do an ex with it. Parisian Walkways ir Seimei are more likely.

I feel that he knows it well, so maybe anymore, even if it still works on his delicate figure, I really doubt that. We will see plenty of sparkly bling bling from now on, too but boobskart...

You seem to ignore the fact he skated the programme at a summer show last year. And it was fun and a success - in fact, he grew into it and looked much more natural than he did when he was 17.

By the way, it’s a little off-topic but he didn’t eliminate Hello I love you, I think. He just couldn’t perform it in a competition gala after SA 2012. After SA 2012 he used Hana-ni-nare in international competition gala twice, in NHK 2012 and 4CC 2013 held in Osaka, but never performed it outside of Japan, probably because it has Japanese lyrics and it was a program for survivors of the earthquake. If he was healthy enough to skate in gala of GPF 2012 and Worlds 2013 he would probably used Hello, I love you. When he skated it in JSOI 2013 where he skated with Kurt, the program looked polished and he seemed to be having fun.

I was just about to write the same. He only skated ONCE at a gala outside Japan in 2012-2013. So not fair to say he eliminated Hello I love you.

I wondered why he never used "Hello, I love you" after 2012 SA any more. He performed different old competitive programs in almost every competition gala in 2013-2014 season, and Final Time traveller (summer EX) in competition galas in 2014-2015 season, but only performed "Hello, I love you" once in gala.

I don't know why he decided to have a tour around his past programmes in 2013-2014 - it's as if he was revisiting them to see how they'd look with him growing. They sure looked different.
