So recently I have seen some tumblr posts saying that Yuri on ice is based on Yuzuru but I see no resemblance at all. Please someone enlighten me if there is...

It is not. They may model the physical appearance out of Yuzuru but nothing more than that is similar in my opinion. There is similarity that the main character idolizes a russian skater, however, in terms of personality/character/background story, the main character is nothing similar to Yuzu? :scratch2:

Even the model of the main character doesn't look like Yuzuru at all lol.

It's because of the physical appearance, and the fact that his hero is a Russian superstar. That's why people think that. But aside from this, it has nothing to do with Yuzu. The personality and such... very easy to see he's nothing like Yuzu, lol!
Also, his background is close to Machida's. Yuri is a mix of many skaters, actually.
All skaters in this show are 100% original, just some skaters have been model for their appearance or their background.

Those comments are mainly from people who have watched the anime but don't know much about figure skating aside from Yuzu (because he became so popular on Tumblr during the Olympics). Most people who have watched it and know more about the sport itself say the resemblance is merely physical. And the fact that his idol is a Russian legend.
Yuri and Yuzuru have very different personalities

Don't they see our boy is a million miles more handsome than the character? :gaah:

Well to be honest I don't know how to compare the handsomeness of an actual human being and an anime character to begin with, hahaha :laugh2:

P.S : Oh right, I remember he was exploding on Tumblr after Sochi for a short while, never know what started that and what was that about though

I remember that, they started screaming on tumblr: "when will we have anime about skating??"
I guess they have it now. Lol

That was a really weird time because he exploded among anime people and kpop people and I was just super confused to what triggered that.

So are you saying that this anime now reignited some people's (specifically anime fans') interest in Yuzuru/Figure skating?

I guess so, there's some masterpost about Yuzuru on tumblr that suddenly got several thousand likes thanks to Yuri on ice even though the connection is quite thin.

He's very much an anime character, so his face actually transforms a little bit from the usual,

to when he's on ice,

and especially during the ED when he is at his happiest:

That is one hot guy, I don't mind him being compared to Yuzu
(physically I mean. Otherwise Yuuri is nothing like Yuzuri and he, like others, is an amalgam of different skaters plus original add-ons)

Apart from the fact that the main character is Japanese, there is absolutely nothing about him that reminds me of Yuzu in any way.

And to be frank, I prefer it that way for now.

I love Yuzu, I already like Yuuri on Ice a lot, but while Yuzu is still skating, I'd rather not have an anime about him.

It really shows the difficulty of his programs and just how good he is, even when he's nowhere near his best. He really was totally knackered during the LP and yet ... he's such a phenomenal complete skater. It's that completeness that makes him truly frightening, because when you add it all up, the potential of these programs, skated cleanly is immense. As I said in the other thread, scary. In a brilliant kind of way.

I completely agree with you both.
And I add some more thoughts. After looking at the programs of the "top" skaters presented till now in the Challenger senior B series and after reading posts in various threads here in GS, I have to say that the programs of Yuzuru have the potential to be among the best (if not the best) of this season, as the latter.

More: It looks like people bashed about Yuzu more for the FS than the SP.

About the first some called the music as boring and things like that (while the music of Radford of the PChiddy FP...?). They said also that he skated most all the time of the perfomance head down, but I re-watched the videos with two different angles and I didn't see that. And some also have to criticize his choice to go for 4 quads instead of working better the choreo sequence, while with all the youngsters upping their TES and adding quads, I think this was the best moment to do so to really compete for the OG 2018.

About the second they could just objecting about the choice of music and the white pants, which I looked also with suspect at the beginning but that I start to appreciate, at least for the originality and the courage: for his versatility and his attitude of never resting on the laurels, but trying to go further.

My only observation instead is about his spins in both programs: with time I would like to see some new spins, if possible :). What do you think about it?

I don't find Yuzu's music to be boring at all! When I first found out he was going to be skating to music by Joe Hisaishi I was super excited, and after hearing the actual program I was definitely not disappointed. It's such a beautiful piece, and I really love Yuzu's costume for it as well. The design is a little similar to his etude costume but the colors are so vibrant and really fit the nature-like theme of his program. For his SP, the music itself wasn't really my taste at first but after seeing him skate it's really starting to grow on me as well :agree2: I do think it might be a bit easier to see him if he added something to the white pants, but it's not a huge issue for me.

I agree with your point about the spins! Was it just me or did they seem a little slower as well? I feel like he did seem tired during his performances but he has been off the ice for a long time and I'm sure he'll improve his stamina as the season goes on! I just hope he doesn't train too hard and exacerbate his injuries >__>
