Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

To be honest I don't really care about their placement. Yes some things were not as neat as they need to, this could be due to her flu and Ruslan's knee. But did you observe the interpretation, the power, speed and softness? They may or not make it into the second half of the season but this dance is really cool. I just hope they're able to improve on it, a breathe of fresh air :) I hadn't realized as well how supple and flexible Lena was before. Great fun.

I was very worried for them and all I wished was a problem without glaring mistakes and this happened gladly. Of course TES is not ideal but I have to say I love the program, so fun and uplifting. I don't have any issue with the music cuts except for the first music transition, it is too abrupt. I think the tech problem comes more from a stamina issue as most have said and the mistakes that stood more were the spin and the last sequence but I think this program is a step in the right direction for them. Shame about the final result though, being 5th won't do them any favors with the fed...

It`s a tough time for every Russian team right now, tbh. B/S probably have to win CoR against Chock/Bates and Weaver/Poje to qualify for the GPF. S/B and S/K have very tough GPs.

Sigh, I`m sad :(

I can easily see no Russian teams getting to the final. S/B are probably looking at 5th in SC, S/K 4th in NHK, then fighting it out for 3rd in China unless W/P have massively regressed. B/S need to win CoR, and yes they beat C/B in Bratislava but their SD score in particular dropped a lot from that event at SA, where as C/B were consistent across their challengers. It will be Shibs (2 1st places), V/M & P/C (1 with 2 1st places, 1 with a 1&2), H/D should get 2&2 because France is pretty empty of top teams, C/B could have a 2&2, 3&2 or 3&1, C/L 2&3 or 3&3 (which would take them out), W/P 1,2or3 & 2, and so B/S really need to win CoR and with a big score because it could come down to a tie breaker between them, C/L, W/P and C/B.

GP standings are not as important as some may think. Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje has won thier GPs and GPF two years in the row and we all know how they ended up in Worlds. The most important for Ruslena is where they stand against other Russian couples. I liked the FD, need better execution, but at least it's clear where they can gain more points (that one lift and spin got a low GOE). And France is good GP for them. The only untouchable ones will be P/C there.

I am sad for them. Hopefully they are still with Shpilband and hopefully he can salvage all that can be salvaged before TdF. It was a deja vu of last year's CoR today. -_- *fingers crossed*
And since there's talk of music that would suit them well, I personally think it would be warhorses, classical drama. Yesterday I was watching Kanako skate to Turandot, and imagining how much IZ could do with such music, how it would show off their partner skills. Carmen still remains their best dance for me, after all, and they seemed well balanced in that dance; while at least in my eyes, Elena kind of overshadowed Ruslan in today's FD.

They really need to be a lot sharper. Other Igor teams look quite sharp compared to their relative abilities. I/Z are far from being in peak form.

If the Russian Fed doesn`t get a team into the GPF, it`s going to be very tough to gain that 3rd spot back. This is so not the way I wanted the season to start, not just for Elena and Ruslan, but for the whole Russian team. Anyway, after looking into the protocols, there were also good things to take out of this FD. I/Z received the same GOE for the SeSq (in B/S case it was a CiST) as B/S and better GOE on the CuLi. It`s interesting to know which judge gave out which score. The US judge gave I/Z nearly on every element a GOE of 0, even on the SeSq that got a +2 from nearly every other judge.

Yeah, I like seeing who gave what. US judge cleaaarly making sure there was no chance of challenge to H/D.

Russian dance is a horrible slump. They don't deserve to be in the gpf or have a third spot at worlds. Do they deserve 2 spots? They must radically change everything they do in ice dance in every aspect. Only stepanova and bukin do something interesting. Judges still really like some of what b/s do. And it's not enough to beat US team number 3.

Now can you take yourself out of the thread? Cause it's getting boring? I wonder why some people sound exactly the same at times. Don't they see their writing gives them away?

I didnt watch them live again. And now that I saw it I like it. I thought using the slumdog millionaire song it wont be typical Bollywood but actually it is. Even the multiple cuts are typical for Bollywood. The final was also really good. For sure it needs polish. They should work on the spin and the lift. The entrance of the spin slow them. During the exit of the lift something happened with Elena dress.

Judge number 7 was very generous to all the US couples and gave the lowest scores to the Russian couples.

Both their programs are super energetic. It is like Igor read my mind, because I always thought that this is where they stand out the most and they did.

What hurts the most is Elena disappointment when seeing the scores. I was also shocked so was the commentator.

No Marta wrote about gpf and worlds third spot and it's like what indication is there that something like that is necessary?

I’ve watched the FD, and I liked it a lot. They stayed in character throughout the program, they danced very close in close hold, and I thought they maintained high energy throughout. Actually, even the commentator said that an Indian dance is hard to do for an FD because of the amount of energy it requires throughout, but that they did very well. It’s only when they were approaching the boards after the skate that I saw how tired they were. Honestly, I think they can skate to anything under the sun – there are unbelievably versatile – so they can just as well skate to whatever they want to skate to. For both programs, this is totally not my type of music, but they live their performances to such a degree that I enjoyed every second of it. And I didn’t feel that Elena overshadowed Ruslan anymore than she should have: after all, shouldn’t the gentleman present the lady, especially in ID? Now the opposite would have been a disaster, lol. But it was just a shade of overshadowing IMO. Let’s face, nobody can be as expressive as Elena, but he was obviously totally into both their dances, from beginning to end.

Yes, the Carmen program was a work of art, but Carmen itself is a work of art. Should they only skate to museum quality music, so as to produce masterpieces? Personally, as a fan, I would have been happy if they did, but it’s their choice really. When I was younger I was disappointed when Johnny Weir didn’t take that route, because so few people can skate a masterpiece to any music, but I have since accepted that for many people it’s more important to express themselves than to create masterpieces. They are young, they are incredibly talented and versatile, they want to try different things. It’s understandable. Also I’m not sure that if they skated to dramatic opera music all the time it would have been well received, no matter how well done. As it is, they totally sell everything they skate to – to watch them is to feel alive with every neuron – and isn’t that enough on the artistic side?

BS is the first couple, of course they got higher PCS, I see nothing wrong with that, it works like that in every federation, I don't think that Rus Fed can be blamed here.
Sorry, but to me it’s like saying that XY are the home team, so of course they get overinflated scores, there’s nothing wrong with that, it happens all the time, so the judges cannot be blamed for doing that.

Loved it! I think the Blues fits them very nicely. The score is low if we consider the increase in base value, but I find it encouraging that their PCS were so close to H/D`s. H/D are skating home and were 6th at Worlds, but the main difference in the scores was the base value. I agree with chameleon that they have to win back the judges` trust, but if you look at their GOEs, there is a lot of positives. They received great GOE for their lift and had the second highest GOE, only behind the Shibs, for their partial, which was a very difficult element for them last year. So, it can only get better from here on :)
And I’m sorry I don’t find it encouraging that their PCs are close to a team who were 6th at Worlds (which also took place in the US, by the way, otherwise we don’t know how HD would have been placed).

I’m also not sure that the issue is winning back the judges’ trust. In 2014-2015 PC came back from the 13th or 15th place at Worlds to become 1st. When did they win the judges’ trust? I do suspect some anti-politicking by the Rus Fed. Otherwise why would they need a sponsor to train with Shpilband when SK didn’t to train with Zoueva?

Well, that sounds a little bit more encouraging, I mean even S/B and S/K lost the FD to G/F at Worlds.
I’m afraid I don’t find that encouraging either. Who are SB and SK? They are no. 11 and no. 10 in the world. Is that what IZ deserve?

I really don`t know what they should do. Maybe the right thing would be to skip TDF? OTOH they would probably lose even more ground. :(
Why? How can they place lower than 5th at TDF?

I agree with Uhh that it’s a good idea to do a B competition between TDF and Nationals. Maybe they could become 2nd at Nationals if they skated well at two more competitions.

But in any case, they are young, BS are not forever, and besides, what’s important for a skater’s career after sport is not so much medals as how they scored with the public. Just look at Weir’s current career and look at Lysachek’s. I was very heartened by how they were received at SA. I certainly very much hope that they’ll achieve all they deserve in the sport, but I think they’ll have a fine future regardless.

Thank you Elena and Ruslan for bringing such much needed joy into my life with your with your SD and FD this season!!! Once again, they've created and performed programs I LOVE. Their FD is very intricate and high energy and fun-fun-fun. Seriously, how do they remember all those hands movements? There is lots of room for improvement and they just need to move forward, work harder, listen to feedback, and address their weaknesses at this point.
One thing I hope they work more on is matching their arm and leg movements to create prettier and more aesthetically pleasing shapes. The audience was extremely receptive to them for both programs! Ruslan has made really good progress with his expressiveness, but it's still something for his team to address. Maybe taking some acting courses and improv classes would help. I think he sometimes has that "I'm focused on steps and the next spot to hit" look and misses an emotional connection with Elena. Hopefully, that makes sense. In the FD, they are doing well emoting to the audience, but need to work more on relating to each other IMO.

They've only been together for 2 1/2 years and it's like the Carpenter's song goes:
Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin' it over, just the two of us
Workin' together day to day
Together
Together
And when the evening comes, we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
(And yes, we've just begun)

Elena and Ruslan Go Forth and Conquer this season!

 judges have no shame

The US judge had an agenda. But all home judges do. This is certainly not unique to this US judge.

I personally think that the job of skating teams is to give judges as little material as possible to low-ball you. That means be as flawless as possible, work hard and polish your program. Probably nobody will frown too much at the US judge because it's not like IZs dance didn't have its problems.

Like this, there was plenty judges could pick on with IZs FD. Yes, they were low-balled but overall I think everyone will agree IZs FD holds promise but needs some work.

What did he say? Could anyone please translate the main idea of this article?

Well, I only read it with google translate. I don`t speak or read any Russian, I`m working on it,though :p

Anyway, it just says that Shpilband thinks they skated well considering the break they had. Their FD stands out compared to the others, but they need to work on the lifts and the spin.
