The Underrotated Jumps of Evgenia Medvedeva

I am afraid that if the witch hunt continues like that, that there will be no more Russians left at this forum. I have seen this whole Anti Russian campaign start prior to the Olympics, where at the Europeans Russian fans were attacked and the most disgusting moment in FS history, surely happened after Sochi, where a petition against the Olympic Champion Adelina Sotnikova, received two million signatures... I am speechless about so much hate from so called "fans", people who have no heart and only follow the sport so that they can insult skaters.

I truly hope in some ways not too m any read these threads. Or that it influences the ISU and big wigs too much. Figure skating unfairly gets ridiculed as not really a sport and such. However, the fact that the scoring system keeps changing or being tweaked and the values of jumps change more than some skaters change coaches. AT least with a race the time is what counts. But hey with all the rules changing whether it be to be more fair or to increase the popularity ie rid of boring school figures it really would have changed history pending what rules/scoring system you used. Trixie S. would never have won a medal but for school figures. Scott Hamilton would have been thumped in 1984 had COP been used or school figures been removed. Witt would not have won gold in 1988. It is hard to have credibility when your winner is based on whatever rules and scale y ou are using at the time let alone judges

IMO
Same turns in the air (2.5 or 3.5 turns).
Under-R be punished but Pre-R didn't.
It is unfair.
That's all.
The reason is simple.

So I'm confused why some people defense Shoma Uno, Satoko Miyahara and others.

Really appreciate your coming across to comment and share your perspective on this...:agree:

I really feel the impact of those thumbs up too......

And it becomes very hard not to either react / feed the troll or walk away altogether when the troll is rewarded by so many posters...

Lastly, I'd like to note that Canadians can be hesitant to react to comments about Canadian skaters that are not neutral or substantiated because many of us expect the response "You Canadians are soooo nationalistic"....

That´s my problem as well,

to see that a rude comment is upvoted by so many, hurts, as it makes you feel not welcome and that others support those words, why else would they click vote up? It´s not the fault of the vote system, I actually think it´s helpful to see if your post was well received, as example when someone analyzes a competition or says something nice to a skater, it´s good to know that it´s appreciated, it´s the users fault, that blindly clicks vote up, without caring that he or she supports a toxic comment.

The thread here, calls Evgenia a cheater and has 21 up votes, so sad how people can be like that, luckily the post that supports her has more, at least something.

To all: Please use the report feature to call the moderators' attention to posts that violate the Golden State guidelines, posted at the top of each page.. (Click on, um, Guidelines. :) ) The competition threads explode up to 100 pages so fast that we cannot keep up with them on our own.

Come back, come back! It is just an ugly rumor that GS is unfriendly to Canadians. We love Patrick Chan, Virtue and Moir, Duhamel and Radford, Kaetlyn Osmond. We love Gilles & Poitier and Kevin Reynolds. Chartrand! Daleman! Weaver and Poje!

I appreciate the hard work and I hope you did not get offended as it´s not the fault of the mods when users are rude ;)

The thing is, to go through a thread where you want to celebrate a great ladies comp (only Kaety had a fall), many clean programs and strong performances, - and all you see is yet another Anti Medvedeva program, anti her body type - jumping technique... where everyone seems to agree about her being bad and rude... it´s just not nice and yes, I could certainly report every single post, but it completely ruins my positive vibes then, as I still need to read it, therefore I just leave these threads to not be infected with that negativity ;) I actually reported one, but it was so much I couldn´t take more of that :( and yes, the up votes were very sad, people supported these comments about her, just like with that silly petition once against Adelina.

Something else is, that not everyone see´s FS as a "perfect sport", I watch it to see skaters overcome challenges and analyze their presentation but also to enjoy their programs, for me it doesn´t matter who wins, but others have a different approach to this, they really look for each single mistake so that they find a reason why their own skater didn´t win and that´s a conflict. It´s nobodys fault, it´s just how it is. It´s like watching a movie and the guy next to you, tells you all the time, how the camera men didn´t have the right angle and that his friend who did not get the job, is so much better.

When someone want´s to make a separate thread like here, then I find this better, as we who come for the entertainment and positive vibes, can enjoy that in the competition threads, while the experts of jumps can talk here, but then please all skaters and not just one. That´s also what I meant with "witch hunt". The other thread was full of anti Medvedeva, nobody even talked about the comp or other athletes, it was all against one and same with the thread here. It´s a bit like in school, one kid is singled out and bullied, that´s not fair.

I support Rika a lot, she is a great entertainer, last season she had one of the best FS´s, but I also see things where she is not that good. It´s not worth a thread though, in my opinion, but each skater could have threads like these here and yet it´s always about specific ones. :(

I won´t deny the knowledge these people have, maybe they are coaches or judges themselves, if so then they are qualified to make these topics, but I have a bit of a problem if a random fan, believes to know more than judges and panel, people who had to go through a hard process before being selected for that job. The scoring system is not perfect, especially from the point of presentation marks, who are very subjective and way too often influenced by the amount of difficult jumps. In my opinion, its not wrong to give a skater with good technique but poor presentation a score that reflects this.

That being said, judges are just like we are, individual characters and GOE are very subjective too, like with the term "creative", what is creative? Is it creative if a skater goes long on one blade, while touching his nose, before the Lutz or if someone adds a Mohawk and sings Dido on the way? Hands down are -1 or -2, two footed are -2 as well I believe, so that´s a criteria to hold on to, but even that can be hard to see without super slowmotions.

I also have to admit that if we talk about UR´s, that it´s really hard to see at times - skaters know how to disguise it. At home, people have hours to make super slow motions, to watch each angle ..., judges don´t have that, I am not even sure if the technical panel has access to that. Judges can only click on the elements on their screen to review them, but it´s real time not slowed down or anything and they face immense pressure, as there is a schedule to keep and it´s unfair to let the next skater wait long, so they need to hurry and there is a lot to process in a short time for them.

Honestly, I have a problem with too critical views - it´s not an easy job and quite often people at home, make it look like they know it all better and if so, then why don´t they sit on the chairs at the ice rink? I can assure you, even if you sit there, it´s very hard and not all judges have the perfect view either, there are many reasons why results can be as they are, it´s not judges who cheat or Putin and what not, it´s just a human procedure. I sit at Oberstdorf each year, not judging ofc. but I have the same view as judges, it´s really not easy if landings are very far right or left (I sit middle) and why I tend to refuse to give feedback about jumps without protocols or scores that we can get sometimes (there is a monitor, where each elements score is given to us). That being said, having never done those jumps, makes me a lousy analyst anyways ;)

I admire people who see a jump and instantly know all about it, my brain works slower there and maybe it´s good that it does, as in music I listen to something and instantly see all the flaws in production, it´s not nice, especially if you listen to older records and now see how bad those actually are. I notice similar with writing and I am sure Mrs. P has a similar situation and might even read my stuff and goes :noshake:

So ya to summarize,

being positive is good, to analyze is not wrong, but it should not be about one person alone and it should especially not be rude. Working with kids taught me one thing, words have a very strong impact on them and especially with young athletes, the words should be chosen more careful. I know it´s hard for Americans, free speech and so - but ya

But nobody else is even allowed to challenge her? She doesn't get called for her faults, while other skaters like Asada and Hongo constantly receive phantom tech calls and big GOE deductions for no good reason.

Rika Hongo's 3Lutz at Skate Canada being called as both "e" and underrotated, and then receiving full downgrades on two other jumps, is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen. Hongo's opening 3F+3T that received a << call and -2 GOE was more rotated and jumped bigger than than Medvedeva's 3S+3T that received no call at all and got +GOE. It is UNFAIR and WRONG.

Each skater has faults, even World Champions, but I never see threads about Javier, Hanyu and so on. It can´t be that only Russians make mistakes, honestly at Worlds last year, I felt that several results did not meet my own judgment, I also noted how I felt that Anna should had won the SP, even though I love Gracie or how Rika should have been before Mao at Cup of China and so on.

So yes, I understand if you feel something could be different and I am sure you are qualified to analyze programs, but you also need to understand that it can look like, that this forum is only there to blame skaters, as many threads are full of complaints of scores, jump technique, music choice, outfit choice ...

No offence to anyone, just my thoughts!

Thanks for entering the discussion bestolen. As I mentioned below, I really thought that the thread that you started on 3Lz last microsecond edge changes and pre-rotaation off the pick was super helpful....

And I appreciate how you and Meioma have brought in some of the slow motion analysis from the Chinese boards to look at pre-rotation issues.

While I understand Skater Boy's concern about the optics of evolving rules, COP is still fairly new. IMO we can only expect there to continue to be some refinement to ensure coherence and consistency across issues such as rotations.

And I disagree with the poster below that this should be left until after the Olympics. The lack of edgecalls was one of the main issues in the controversy after Sochi, and that has now been addressed with rule changes [even if the uptake is not fully consistent as yet].

Let's encourage the ISU to anticipate and resolve these issues before there is another Olympics marred by such controversy.

-I'm really curious how many figure skating experts, judges are among us? - I feel often that the fs fans too much to believe in their knowledge

- I hardly believe the coaches of other skaters, experts wouldn't criticize publicly Medvedeva's jumps.- They don't do that.

-How to work the fs fandom? - Some people start to say something about a skater ...the others who don't like that skater start to repeat that opinion without control... Ready an opinin for a long time. Be careful!

Medvedeva is not cheater.

Wow, people are **personally** offended as Canadians or Russians when someone criticizes the jumping technique of those country's skaters? Get a thicker skin.

Or in the words of Mathman earlier "Anyone who doesn't like it, let them come onto the [thread] and challenge [by making their own slow-mo gifs that show what excellent technique their skaters have]."

Dear tech panel and judges, you have slow mo vids to review elements, use it on everyone!

---

The reason why some posters nit pick on whoever wins a comp is that the tech panel and judges don't do it enough that their flaws get called. It's unfair that some skaters get punished harshly for small mistakes and then others aren't for the same or bigger mistakes. They're all working hard. And they can review things longer than usual as we've seen during Skate Canada. Rika waited for a looong time for her scores. Her elements really got nitpicked. If they're gonna do that to others, why not do that for everyone? Why did some skaters' UR not get called and receive +GOEs on it while others got harsh calls and questionable -GOEs?

In Evgenia's case, her inflated scores suggest that her elements are some of the greatest in the field (ever??) and that's simply not true. Her jumps aren't great or even comparable to Yuna Kim's or Caro K's yet she scores like them in that area. Tano-ing is not equal to jumping huuuuge with great speed and flow. Plus, she has excessive pre-rotation (not Satoko level tho). Her SS is nowhere near Mao or Satoko yet she scores bigger (same thing can be said about Ashley's SS). I truly believe that she deserves her wins and would win rightfully even without the crazy scores. She has huuge talent but gets criticism because of the crazy judging and that's not fair for her because she seems like an adorable person. Judges ruin the precious things in this sport.

Two interesting topics to discuss here, neither of which involves Evgenia being a cheater or "wahhhh not fair :(".

1. Should pre-rotation be evaluated when deciding if a jump receives full credit? If so, how? What should the parameters be?

2. What criteria should determine the GOE a jump receives? Because Evgenia's jumps DO check a lot of the boxes (transitions, tanos) for positive GOE. But there's definitely an argument to be made that the current rules over reward some qualifies and under reward others. For example, I would prefer transitions not be taken into account (there's a PCS score for that), and instead height and distance be worth more. Liza T lacks transitions, but I prefer her jumps to just about anyone else's.

And can we stop comparing Evgenia's score to people against whom she has never competed? COP doesn't work across competitions, let alone seasons. It just doesn't.

What about Kaetlyn's 3F+3T getting same GOE as Evgenia's 3F+3T (1.60) when it's obvious, Kaetlyn's so much better? It's not that I'm comparing her to people who she has never competed with in an unreasonable way. I'm just trying to make a point that her jumps get rewarded like they're up there with the greatest jumps ever performed when clearly they don't have the same quality. There's gotta be some comparison because the GOE scoring principle is the same. The BV may have changed but the execution scoring hasn't. GOE is for difficulty and quality of execution and I think bigger jumps with great speed and flow are harder than small jumps with Tano. That's all. Really, the problem is the scoring system as it has always been and the judges over rewarding her elements and under rewarding others. Not her fault at all. She just does her job.

For #2, I think that CoP is rewarding transitions into jumps, arm position during jumps, and transition of jumps more than the actual jump itself.

For example, compare these two jumps:

1998 Michelle Kwan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHfgjszz_Tk&t=0m25s
  1. transition in: single leg lift, also with telegraphing with longgggggggg set up of lutz
  2. air position: normal
  3. transition out: normal

2010 Evgenia Medvedeva
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWUJ62NXMy0&t=1m20s
  1. transition in: jump, turn, short set up
  2. air position: tano arm
  3. transition out: spread eagle

We'll never know who would get better GOE for their jumps, but I get the feeling that Med's jumps would be considered better because she fulfills more bullet points. I don't really like Med's jumps. If you look at Michelle vs. Med, you can see that Med uses her arms a lot more to propel herself into the air. Remember how we used to say that Caroline Zhang had a "mule kick" because she lifted her leg really high into the air before her flip and lutz jumps? Med has a "mule kick" in her arms. Before Med does her flip and lutz, she looks like she is doing the "Y" in the "YMCA" dance.

Compare this to Eliza Tukt's jumps, which have more of the springy quality. Tukt's is getting scored lower even though her jumps are springy and pleasant to watch. But she is missing a bunch of bullet points, so I guess she doesn't get as much +GOE.

There's something going on with the judges and Evgenia, everybody not deluded can see that. Why would this fuzz happen? An strange coincidence? Armies of haters came out of their caves? Lots of people who love the sport suddenly went hysterical, at the same time? It's a real issue. Read the comments on the videos. Lot's can't ignore the elephant in the room anymore. :noshake:

It starts to be an obsession... I really hope Evgenia is not aware how she is attacked on GS. Even, if she knows, she doesnt care about it. She is liked much in Japan (other Russian girls too) and this is enough for her, I think. Who as cameraman, she choose when approaching the bord during gala ? Japanese, of course :) I think she will never again come to Skate America...

It's peculiar that BoP decided to single out Evgenia. It's also interesting that Evgenia jumps are not compared to some of her present day competitors, like say Boston's very own silver medalist Ashley Wagner, which, due to pure oversight I'm sure, didn't get a similar thread after her victory at SA. What a remarkable coincidence.

Eh, the criticisms aren't even on her, but rather the judges/technical specialists.

She wanted to, though. This season, but as she said she somehow had to choose Skate Canada cause Ashely chose SA. (though I thought Med has the right to pick first)

She's much liked in the US too. There are some mean comments in this thread, but there are also legitimate concerns with her jump technique that do not constitute "attacks."

I do worry that her body could change more and make this technique much less successful for her. If her body stays relatively the same, she'll be fine. At the same time, her jumps did look labored at SC. Not sure if it was a bad day for her or a sign of things to come. IMO, Eteri should be training her girls with more textbook technique, as it will make body growth much less of a concern. It'll be interesting to see her go head-to-head with Polina Tsurskaya next year, particularly on their jumps. Polina already has the body of a grown woman and her jumps are phenomenal (but less consistent than Evgenia's), whereas Evgenia is still girlish in figure, doesn't have excellent technique, but is very, very consistent.

I think that Skate America got to choose Ashley first as a "host pick."
