Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

He's definitely a more long-term strategist compared to some of the other top competitors. He just needs to be more okay with the 'lose some battles but win the war' strategy to not overtrain this season. He's already super impressive so far considering he even thought about skipping the season due to his jumps not being there and how much practice time he lost.

My recomendation to Yuzuru: Get rid of all transitions, he does not need them, other skaters have no step before quads and they get no deduction at all. Seriously Yuzuru might get more consistent without all those transitions. But knowing Yuzuru, he must add more transitions, so if anything happens, his scores are always justified.

Yea, he's one of the few (actually, are there others?) who even does steps into his planned COMBO jump. He really likes to make things difficult for himself...

Some skaters even have no step before solo jump and has no deduction for that at all. At some point I am like: "Why Yuzuru why you makes it so hard for yourself?"
But again, if he did not have steps before his quad, one day judges might just deduct something from his score and say "Because of no steps!"
Judges have such double standards. :sarcasm:
I hope he will be healthy, he sees through all of this and adds as many transitions as possible, so no matter his scores will always be justified, unlike others.

I think it wouldn't be a question of one day, I think the points would fly away right off the bat. Some because of the double standards, and some because he is the man setting overall standards, that's the peril of being so good. It's frustrating but there's nothing to be done.

Isn't it so funny? I mean before this season, a specialist I know told me over and over again that judges would be strict with steps before jumps and PCS but look at what happened. I am quite dissapointed. And Yuzuru is held to crazy standards, steps before solo quad, step before combo, transitions before everything... and even when he does all of that, they're still complaining: "PCS too high, GOE too high!"

Mind them, many skaters have no steps before quads or combo at all, much less transitions and those skaters do not get such doubt towards them.

But again, there is nothing we can do. I am glad Yuzuru has prepared for all and keeps upgrading his difficulty.

Yes, I guess his hunger for victory fuels him but at the same time sometimes gets in the way of his otherwise rational mind. In the interviews he sounded positive, i think even his hypercritical self knows he did his best in the circumstances. Even if he wasn't coming out of an injury it's not like it was a bad first GP.

I think one of the subjectivities with GOE scoring is that how you perform at the start of the program affects how the judges view the rest of the program. If there was a fall at the start, they become much harder to impress and everything after that is scored lower than if there were no fall at the start. It's definitely better to fall at the end (if there is to be a fall). I feel like the GOEs would be marked differently if the judges only watch the program after any mistakes, which shouldn't be the case since the elements should be judged individually. I'm still so baffled at the 0 and 1 GOEs for the 4S. If that had been the first jump, there would be no way those GOEs would've been given.

In my opinion Hanyu keeps uping his technical content because he wants to challenge himself and because he doesn't want to get caught like Chan by the next teenage wonder star. If you look at the PCS first year seniors like Shoma Uno and Boyang Jin have gotten then you can't blame him. (Note: I'm aware that Boyang Jin and Shoma are both in the second year as seniors)

I think Yuzuru is completely unaware of his destructive power
Being Hanyued to death sounds pretty good. Oh god help me i am fangirl trash. I have some mental images right now that are making me feel ashamed

This is what annoys me the most. He's probably got the most difficult programs out there but people complain about how he falls and still get a high score. Please... if someone else can execute his programs better than he does let me know. :sarcasm:
