OMG!
This recent news clip is so nice.
Around 1:15, they features his face off ice. Very touching to see Jason talking to him funnily to try to ease shoma. Further, at CoR, he got a lot of presents from children.
Around 4:40, he explains about his eagle. It’s very hard since he has the risk of falling down. About the eagle after 3A, he must do it without speed right after the jump, so it’s so difficult and he further says this is the only spectacle in short program.

Of course, the interaction between Tara and Daniel is so lovely.

Love this You Tube. It really shows the fun side of Shoma. All I could think of was Danny's poor back when he was lifting Shoma. He may be little, but I think he's solid muscle. So funny - Tarah trying to do the cantilever. Forget it Tarah -- too difficult! :laugh2: For some reason, last night I just HAD to watch their 2016 Nationals performance where they took gold in the Pairs competition. It was so wonderful!...That slow cantilever in the SP does look VERY difficult...I think that is my favorite thing - where the kids bury him in presents and stuffed animals! Some of them are taller than him!

Thank you for the highlight! Mark is ex-ice dancer? I have trouble in listening skill, and it’s difficult to understand fully their talks. I feel graceful to your job so much! They praised his transitions and skating skills.
Further, Dave seems prefer his FS this year. So far, it seems the response by skating fans to his program isn’t so bad. I found his program this year was challenging last summer, but he can execute this program. My favorite part is steps! He really feels the music and express it with well controlled blades and upper body.
Now I know why I had such a hard time understanding Mark. He is from Scotland. I have a very hard time with that accent, although I love to hear it! Yes, he is a former ice dancer. I thought I would write parts of the interview, because some people are too busy to listen to the You Tube. Also if English isn't people's first language, sometimes these things are hard to understand because they interrupt each other, don't finish their sentences, etc. So interesting that they praise the transitions.

Thanks! I truly wanted to know the part of Kurt. Further, about Tracy’s word, "squirrely" landing is interesting.
There’s a twitter by ex-skater explaining about technical matters. He comments about Kurt’s words that it’s somewhat by his habit from childhood. He tackles his over rotation problem by opening his right arm earlier. Anyway, he should master the skill of controlling rotation.

Thanks for your view. he is still young and moving forward step by step. im glad you could see much improvement with his jumps at SA(I didn’t know the reference of his bad habit and his mental.). He will continue his work with Alex( shoma is very shy around new people. Now he seems familiar with Alex and the practice circumstance there and I don’t think he tries to do work with other coaches any more:biggrin:.) and let’s watch over him.

Yes, let the others get the attention. This is what we call "flying under the radar". Don't know if everyone uses that expression, but the less pressure, the better!

I was just gathering up a few quotes to put here, although I see some of them are already in that excellent, detailed Japan Times article, so I won't put them here.

CBC comments on FS (Kurt Browning)
--You can see his upper body is too far ahead of his hips. And speaking of the hips, you can see on this jump his hips are way back. His jumps are often over rotated and it puts a lot of torque on his knee. It also buys him time for the landing. But I can't imagine that his knees in five years are going to be very happy. This could be a serious longevity problem. (my note -- in other words, if he hopes to have a long career, this might be a problem)
--Happier comment -- That 3A, Loop, 3F at the 4 minute mark of the program is so impressive. I'm starting to get used to his brilliance!

USA HD (Tracy Wilson and John Coughlin)
--One of the reasons he can rotate so fast is that he waits until the very last second to break out of that rotational position. It sometimes leads to an almost "squirrely" landing where he doesn't get his free leg out quite soon enough. His free leg swings out and translates to a little trouble on landing the quad triple (referring to the 4T-3T in Shoma's SP)
--What a fighter! To have the presence of mind to be able to turn that second triple jump! You have the feeling that when he is skating like that, he can't be bothered with the error because he is so committed to the performance and the character behind it. Whereas with other skaters, sometimes you can see a program unravel because of "nickel and dime" errors on a landing. That is never the case with him. He is never out of the fight.

My note: So that knee thing seems like it could be a real issue. He has to keep continuing to work on that (with Alex, hopefully). Now that I think of it, it was probably John Coughlin (former U.S. pairs skater) who talked about how he goes back to his old habits when he gets nervous. I think a lot of the commentators try to point out that once in awhile, if a skater has a jump with a wobbly / off landing, they have to land with a deep knee bend to save the jump. But that shouldn't be happening all the time. If it is, you're using a technique that is hard on the body. But this is why he went to Alex in the first place, I think. So he needs to just continue to work on it and try to be able to incorporate the better technique, even when he's nervous! At Skate America, his jumps had much better spring to them, and I didn't see these problems where he was saving the jumps with the deep knee bend...I was listening to the Spanish ladies (Paloma and Susana) talk about his SP. They were saying "Not a perfect program, but even so - how beautiful, elegant, with such quality of edges, technique , spins. How he fought to get that triple in the 4T-3T combination. This was magnificent. He will give us a lot to talk about this season."

Rafael Artunian. Ashley and Adam's coach.

Oops! Didn't see your answer. I always have to look up the spelling of Raf's last name! He has quite a long list of skaters he has coached. :otopic: Wondering how he'll be for Mariah Bell.

it must be! unfamilier name!

I find Mariah is a true talent! Someone says he can compete for the medals at 2018 Olympics.. (btw, I cant write the spell of PyeongChang, so I always write “2018 Olympics”, “next Olympics” “2018”…lol)

Thank you! I really needed this. What a lovely clip!

During the 2nd group warm-up:
Tarasova: Oh here’s my favorite Kiddo (she’s calling him малышатина aka kid/kiddo) just did a 4flip just like kids going to school.
Grishin: He went to school did the flip, came home and did his homework. (Implying that he did it without thought, with ease.)

Just after Kolyada skated:
Grishin: I just want to add some sugar to these bitter moments (as Kolyada didn’t skate perfectly), at the moment Shoma Uno, the leader of the competition, is running on ice among the girls who are picking up the toys and he blends in well as he has almost the same height. The girls are about 5, 6 years old LOL.
Tarasova: Yes, yes and his costume has Swarovski crystals as well as the girls’ costumes.
(They said it with such joy. I love how they speak about Shoma)
Grishin: Shoma already has one 1st place this year and he’s skating his FS under Buenos Aires Hora Cero by A. Piazzolla.
Tarasova: Let’s not talk and just enjoy it.

During program:
Tarasova: Here’s the 4 Flip, the only one in the world. The kiddo who does the 4 Flip.
4T from the steps, he didn’t want to disappoint anyone.
|
Tarasova: From the spread eagle into 3.5A
Grishin: And it’s in the second part. He’s got all the combos in the second part of the program, all 3 of them.
Tarasova: Of course he does.
|
Tarasova: The third quad 4T
Grishin: Yes, as well in the second part but not very clean, it’s a bit difficult.
He’s gonna be without one combo.
Tarasova: Axel loop and Flip (Tarasova said four, zero, three but I guess she made a mistake as it was 3T 1Lo 3F). He didn’t make any additional moves he’s got power in his hands!
Tarasova: And of course a Genius boy. As little as he is (meaning the age and the height) so much power he’s got inside. No additional moves, not with hand nor head, everything sparingly as a man. (She said скупо which means in this case something like restrained, meaning the manly restrain.)
Thank you very much for this great joy you gave us, simply tremendous joy. Of course he’s gonna jump the 4T in the second half later on. He gave all his strength in order to gain speed for his last axel, because without speed the axel (3.5A) can’t happen.
Grishin: The axel was executed on the 5th minute and with the loop and 3F. Mihoko Higuchi came here from Japan. Actually, from North America.
Tarasova: Yes they are just flying, they’re passing by their home country not even landing.
Grishin: Haha yes they’re not even flying in into the country of the rising sun. Well we can say for sure that Shoma will be participating in the GPF
Tarasova: These kind of people cannot miss GPF they have to be there (meaning the GPF will be not GPF without him).
Grishin: Even judging by the math he cannot be outside the top 6 in the world in this season. And here he’s without 2 combos and with a ‘dirty’ 4T. Can you imagine what will be when he’s gonna skate it clean. When he’s gonna land the 4T adding another jump to it and doing the 3rd combo.
Tarasova: He’s just gonna do it. One can say just by looking at him that he’s gonna do it without a doubt. Where does he get this strength, where’s the will coming from, the will to be the first, the best, to take risks and advance, learn new stuff take the path that no one is taking?
Grishin: Rush and buy the tickets to Marseille. 186.48 is not something surprising for the Japanese skaters. But the 285.07 is his seasons best, meaning the total for 2 programs.
Tarasova: And all this is with a fall.
Grishin: And without 2 combos.

Sorry for being late to the party, but thank you very much for the translation!
I was really moved by their nice comments about Shoma. It brought me to tears somehow. (T-T)

It may take me a year and a half to learn to spell to PyeongChang. :drama: Luckily we have time! What a nice magazine cover of both Yuzu and Shoma.

Sorry again and again. recent news clip. they show again and again his childfood...
Around 1:40, his 9 yo time! he was surrounded by girls.

Further, it shows his 4 loop. He got it only by watching yuzu’s video. For shoma, quad is not special.
Do you think he should put 4loop in his programs in the future?

He certainly was a cute kid! Also love it when he is in the pool, and I think they are probably showing that he has 10% body fat. I also enjoy seeing the clips of torture time with Alex! :laugh2:

Oh that 4Loop really worries me. He needs to get his technique perfect on what he is already doing before he tries to add another quad. His poor hips and knees are already taking a lot of stress. And as far as I know, he hasn't had a clean FS yet at Lombardia or his 2 GP events. I think it was at SA he fell on his 3 jump combo and then at Rostelecom he fell on the quad toe. It's all still a work in progress. He needs to continue working on his "squirrely" (or wonky, as I would say!)landings!

He is probably already getting nervous after seeing that Nathan landed a 4 Lutz / 3T and a 4F at the Paris competition today. But Nathan fell or touched down his hand on his other quads, I think. All that jumping seems to disrupt the flow of the program.

I do not think he should add another quad yet. He should master what he has first. His program this year is so good and complete with what is in there, but he has to do it cleanly, consistently. When he competes it like that, then add another quad. I think he can do it, but he has already added so much that I think he should wait. Keep it in your back pocket for when you need it, shoma.

I agree with this.

Nathan has a lot of potential but I think that at the moment Shoma has a better balance between TES /PCS.

I think Nathan's comments after his FS today are very telling. "I was simply drained after the two most difficult quads (lutz and flip). I landed them so early into the program, and they took all my energy. I think that's where I faltered today, and I'll need to work on that," Chen said. I think this statement confirms what we all already know -- it takes a lot out of the skaters to do the quads. At SA, Shoma did 3 quads in the FS and was really dragging when he came off the ice. Stick with the flip and the toe Shoma kun!

Thanks. Im not so positive about his adding quad and I get worried everytime media picks up his quad. He is a skater who’s moved forward at his own pace, and I really want him to keep his pace.

Shoma is not known so much by the people other than figure skating fans. And he is now a promising young athlete of all sports and nationwide sports channels try to pick him up. When they introduce shoma, they often use his childhood days’s films! When you watch it, you immediately feel how lovely he is.
About summer training in US, I think Japanese media took a lot of films and they seem to show a part of them little by little. I feel sorry for the skaters there. they are local skaters? They must have been bothered by the Japanese media. So heartwarming they were smile and seemed to welcome shoma.

Shoma happened to try 4loop and landed it before camera(the same pattern as 4flip). The video of 4loop was at his open practice at Cyukyo Univ. rink, a few days after the official practice of yuzu in middle septemeber. Shoma’s physique and basics with have still way to go. I really don’t want him to damage himself.

I hope they continue to show more of the training films. I find them really fascinating. I would especially love to see some of the ones where they did the jump training using the harness...I am only guessing, but I would think that the other skaters who were at the summer training were probably really excited to meet him. After all, it's not every day that they get to meet a skater who has won major events! I think in the training "camp", there was one other male - and he is a high school student from the Chicago area and competes on the novice level. The others were girls, and I have a feeling they were probably from other states. I believe they were novice level skaters. One of them is a pairs skater...I was wondering if Shoma has improved with his bowling since last year! (maketakunai):laugh2:

Oh, Alex hald the summer camp and shoma and the boy and girls participated in it together? THey must have been surprised that of a sudden Japanese media came and was taking films. Anyway, wherever he may go overseas for practices, it's certain we can get the footage!
he is not good a bowling?

From what I saw, it seemed that a group of kids (and Shoma) did strength and stamina training and some other activities together. I'm sure Shoma had private training though too, because he is so much more advanced than they are. This is the group. The caption talked about bowling too. Someone posted the bowling scores, but I think the account is private now. https://www.instagram.com/p/BHHAK4qhGbC/ His first score was something like 53, and the second was around 105. We were laughing and saying now he had 3 things he didn't want to lose at -- skating, gaming, and bowling!!!

OMG! 53 is so low… he must have had some “G”.

This week, I was watching Figure skating news as usual, but I couldn’t catch single a news about him. I felt like he were not in Japan! Of course, he must keep practicing for GPF. Shoma gets famous at some extent, but he doesn’t have any CM. Mao and Yuzu have so many, and Marin recently got contract. I guess shoma is from wealthy family and it is not necessary for him to earn money and he doesn’t seem to be good at CM job.

Maybe Shoma is working on his bowling?! :scard7: (No, not really!)...I was trying to find some news about him on the internet and looked many places and found nothing. Good for him! Hopefully he is training hard without anyone interrupting, and he knows how to disappear! He had better not be in Chicago, although I don't know how he would sneak out of Japan so quietly! Maybe I need to do some investigating. Surprised he doesn't have any CM. Even the Brit TV commentators were talking about how "marketable" he is. I notice he always has on New Balance gym shoes (I think) and he always wears that necklace which looks like Phiten (but isn't). He has been fortunate to win a lot of prize money this year too. And I wonder how much they get for doing the ice shows. He had 30+ shows, so he must get something from that...Seems like even those from wealthier families can use the support. It's such an expensive sport.
