From Skylark.......Nah! Ricky was Sherlock Holmes, not Inspector G!

:laugh2: I know, but that's what my partner called him after the event was over. He said, "I think Inspector Gadget Should've Won" I cracked up and corrected him but he still called him inspector gadget even after that year ended.

:points: for Ashley

The season Gracie can write something like that about a bad performance, she will be World champion.

Well, I see your point, but on second reflection, I think that Gracie will fulfill her potential as a skater when she can be true to all of her own talents and personality traits. I wouldn't want to make her another Ashley (with the addition of great jumping technique, LOL). I want her to be and believe in herself ... and of course as I think you mean, put her successes and setbacks into perspective.

oh, I see.

I think byes should be reserved, generally, for girls who have (1) earned them through the system in place, i.e. high placement at nationals or (2) have the potential to actually medal at international competitions (need not be potential to medal at Worlds or anything, but the realistic hope of medaling at a Senior B would be nice). I'm obviously not advocating that only 12 girls be invited to Nationals total, but we have a system in place for earning a spot at Nationals if you haven't earned a bye- Regionals and Sectionals. I don't think giving byes to these girls accomplishes anything.

In each of the past two season Angela Wang won two Challenger Series/Senior B medals. So it seems she has met your criteria for a bye and really a trip to Warsaw this weeks would not have been out of line.

If you look who was sent to Warsaw:

Tomoko Hiwatshi (Men)
Liu/Johnson (Pairs)
Maxwell/Devereaux (Dance)

None of these teams have the senior TES minimum, which is why I think they were sent.

The Golden Spin entries are not final (since they aren't on the assignments page) so I wouldn't be surprised if Angela Wang ended up there.

Also sending Angela to Warsaw wouldn't have really help things too much -- Pacific Coasts is relatively empty compared to Mids.

Karen has been in need of a coaching change since last season at least. Tammy Gambill's skaters are all inconsistent and have historically had a ton of talent but no ability to break through to the top; they're always almost there.

I also believe Karen needs some sort of change. She has great basics, with big jumps, great speed, and fast centered spins, not to mention her spiral. I think she is a all around skater, but she is not consistent in her jumps. Perhaps she needs to jump smaller to be more consistent?

Pacific Coast Sectionals Junior Ladies just finished

Nationals Qualifiers (Top 4):

1) Kaitlyn Nguyen, 58.45 + 98.68 = 157.13
2) Starr Andrews, 55.12 + 101.36 = 156.48
3) Nina Ouellette, 55.11 + 96.40 = 151.51
4) Elizaveta Kulik, 53.14 + 91.24 = 144.38
__________________________________________
5) Sierra Venetta, 54.11 + 85.26 = 139.37

LIZA KULIK FINALLY MAKES IT TO NATIONALS <3

From the protocols

- Starr had a nice 3S-3T-2T opening combo. Looks like her spins/steps were also pretty successful, but her Lutz (popped to Single, edge call) and Flip (fall) still need work.

- Kaitlyn had trouble with her 3Lz-1L-3S opening combo, underrotating both the loop and salchow. She also fell once. However, it looks like her spins and steps were strong.

- Nina had all Level 4 spins and no falls, but popped her second Lutz to a Single. Looks like her PCS kept her in it (highest PCS by a tad)

- Liza's tech is not as strong as the others, especially looking at her spins/steps levels, but she got good PCS.

- Poor Sierra fell 3 times and ended up with a +REP penalty on her second Salchow. Ouch.

I just check some planned content for some of the competitors. Apparently Gabby Noullet had planned a Quad Salchow! :eeking:I know if she didn't attempt it it means that it's not solid but if any US lady is landing a mostly rotated quad I wanna see!

Or it could've been a typo... :curse:

I was primarily talking about Emily and Hannah in my comments, not Angela, as they were the two skaters who were mentioned in the comment I first responded to. In any case though she won her event and so she's on her way to Nationals as she should be :)

I also want to be absolutely clear that I am not arguing against USFSA giving skaters like Emily and Hannah (and Angela but they tried to give Angela Skate America, pretty much the biggest opportunity in their power to give her, so think this doesn't apply to her as much for that reason) opportunities. I just don't think they should need to make those opportunities correspond with competitions that might give these skaters byes to Nationals. Moreover, Hannah in particular has had many opportunities in the past, though I wouldn't argue that she couldn't have had another this year.

Pretty sure her dad is her coach.

Yes, and her mom (Ekaterina Gordeeva) also helps :)

SO happy she finally made it to Nationals, I've been following her for quite a few years now hoping for this! She has some really lovely qualities.

I've said this for a while. I watched several of her skater and they all seem to have the same problem inconsistent jumps. I want Karen to go to Brian. I know he's got the Canadian Ladies and Elizabet, but Brian can work with her strengths and help her become way more consistent.

On the subject of byes to Nationals:

On the men's side, I'm guessing that Dolensky must have a bye, as he did not compete at Sectionals??

His most recent competition was Skate America (approx. a month ago), and his next one is not until Golden Spin (almost three weeks from now).
So as a fan of Tim's, I'm wondering whether any GP is sufficient for bye??

If(??) so ... would mean that Mariah already would have a bye too, even without competing at Tallinn??
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Mariah's too. And am happy for her to have any opportunities to compete.

Just trying to understand how/why byes are given.

So...Angela Wang just threw down a serious SP at Sectionals with a 69.52 complete with a 3F-3T (with a 1.75 GOE!) and all level 4 elements. Depending on how she does tomorrow in the FS, she could challenge at Nationals (assuming she qualifies.)

Caroline Zhang sits in 2nd with 61.55. She landed her 3L-3L, but with a small negative GOE. Got level 4s on her spins and a Level 3 on her Step Sequence. ...

Excited for Angela and Caroline :yay:.

Sorry about Emily Chan :sad4:.

I would imagine it's her Olympic Gold Medal Winning Parents. You can't beat that for good coaching.

I do in all honesty think that they might want to bring in a COP specialist to help her with the spins especially. I've been watching her now for several years like I said and her spin levels have never been where they need to be. However, as I also said above, she has some lovely qualities artistically and she also has solid jump technique, so I do think she has real potential.

I'll admit I've also wondered if she's ever considered trying pairs...

Is the free program happening this afternoon?

I disagree. Sometimes having parents with high achievements makes it hard to rise up to their level. Just ask Michael Jordan's sons.

Timothy Dolensky does have a bye to Nationals according to Sylvia's lists

He had a bye through Regionals due to having an international assignment (Rule 2473 in the USFSA rulebook). Not quite sure where his bye through Sectionals straight to Nationals comes from, since

A) neither of his International Assignments (Nebelhorn or Skate America) conflicted with Sectionals (required as per rule 2514C)
B) Rule 2515 doesn't affect him (didn't place in top 5 at last Nationals, or medal at the most recent Olympics or Worlds)
C) Can't get a bye through GPF qualifications

I'm assuming there's just something that I'm missing

Mariah's Tallinn assignment should give her a bye through Rule 2514 (meeting the part C requirement of a Sectionals conflict).
