I just check some planned content for some of the competitors. Apparently Gabby Noullet had planned a Quad Salchow! :eeking:I know if she didn't attempt it it means that it's not solid but if any US lady is landing a mostly rotated quad I wanna see!

Timothy Dolensky does have a bye to Nationals according to Sylvia's lists

He had a bye through Regionals due to having an international assignment (Rule 2473 in the USFSA rulebook). Not quite sure where his bye through Sectionals straight to Nationals comes from, since

A) neither of his International Assignments (Nebelhorn or Skate America) conflicted with Sectionals (required as per rule 2514C)
B) Rule 2515 doesn't affect him (didn't place in top 5 at last Nationals, or medal at the most recent Olympics or Worlds)
C) Can't get a bye through GPF qualifications

Mariah's Tallinn assignment should give her a bye through Rule 2514 (meeting the part C requirement of a Sectionals conflict).

Based on the Dolensky mystery, just was/am curious whether Mariah "needed" the bye via Tallinn.

I disagree. Sometimes having parents with high achievements makes it hard to rise up to their level. Just ask Michael Jordan's sons.

This is completely true! My Dad ended my skating because he said it was a distraction to my singing career. I wonder if Liza has other interests, or activities that also take time away from her training. Like Art, Singing, Dancing, or like my sister's who except one, stopped going to dance class when they made the cheerleading squad.

I meant that Mariah's bye fits what I can find in the Rulebook, whereas Tim's doesn't seem to. Since it's hard to clarify where Tim's bye actually comes from, I'm assuming Mariah did actually need the Tallinn assignment.

Gabby is a Tammy Gambil skater. She's been inconsistent all season. Last season she was solid. This has been disappointing to say the least.

I'll admit I've also wondered if she's ever considered trying pairs...

I wonder how many former pairs ladies would actively encourage their daughters to become pairs ladies themselves. Didn't Gordeeva witness and/or experience firsthand pairs girls being mistreated by coaches and partners? (Though that was a by-product of the era and the Soviet sporting system rather than endemic to pairs skating as a whole.) Plus pairs skating just seems way more dangerous for girls. IMO, I bet most parents - including and especially actual pairs skaters - would probably prefer their daughters to do singles. I'm not making this observation for any real reason - just something that occurred to me.

Last year a claim was made that 3 internationals assignments is good enough for a bye to nationals. And this did seem to fit who had byes last year. Tim has had 2 assignments so it sounds like this is his third so i am guessing they are sticking with this pattern. And really it is not such a bad rule.

OHHHHH he's assigned to Golden Spin! Didn't realize that. Makes sense.

Then that settles it. Tim's bye would be from the 3 assignments thing, but Mariah's is by virtue of the Sectionals conflict with her Tallinn assignment.

I think the view might be that Mariah earned and extra spot with her SA medal. Maybe they were not able to nab her a second GP, but at least she got another assignment. It's is another chance to practice and earn world standing points at least. I am glad her SA medal seemed to have gotten some reward.

4) Paige Rydberg, 57.99 + 94.73 = 152.72

Angela did really well with her non-jump elements (all Level 4) and landed a bunch of triples, but did have a fall and some combo issues and a singled jump.

Yay for Caroline, who seems to be on the upswing. Succeeded with her 3L-3L, including a 1.40 GOE.

Also, serious congrats to Livvy Shilling for making it to her first ever Nationals! Knocked out a 3F-1L-3S and all Level 4 spins and steps!

Paige Zayaked herself. Did 3 2Ts. Her actually performed jumps look completely different from her planned content, which probably had some effect.

Olivia was a bit farther back to begin with, but even though she had issues with jump combos and pops she still ended up in 5th. Vanna just had lots of jump issues, it looks like.

Also, her ISU PB on record is 176.48. In-country inflation aside, she's definitely going to be fighting for a medal this year, especially with Polina's injury issues and Gracie's issues.

do you think these girls can really compete with the current crop of international senior ladies? I just don't see it happening. It seems ever since Sasha retired, the US ladies have struggled...it took Ashley a long time to get to where she is...and now Gracie in a slump..hopefully skate america lit a fire in mariah bell. We don't have many options. Japan and Russia, and even Canada seem to be progressing, but we are not, and that's fine. I just think it will take longer.

Congratulations to Angela and Caroline. I have always loved Angela but, it's Caroline that I'm most impressed with. Looking at the results it appears that she won the Free Skate which is fantastic. I remember people asking her why she bothered to continued to compete after placing out of the top 10 last year. Congratulations to all the skaters who made it to Nationals.

Just watched Caroline's skate. Really inspired by her effort here -- still plenty of work to do, but it's very apparent to me how hard she's worked to come back to this point.

The 3L-3L was really nice (great snap to the second loop -- which was just as big ) and all the jumps -- even her 2A which has been her nemesis in the past -- look much bigger.

Agreed that Caroline's entire effort is very admirable. The entire trajectory of her career is sad in many ways - she went from a very successful and hyped junior (in the post-Kwan/Cohen years, no less) - had some middling results as a senior, and then some very poor results as a senior. Add that to the fact that she underwent major hip surgery last yearish, and I know that if I were in her shoes I would've retired and found something else to pursue.

But she hasn't given up, and I'm assuming that's because she really, really loves to skate. I'm sure the goals for her skating have changed a lot compared to whatever they were 8-9 years ago, but whatever she has decided she wants to accomplish now (kind of assuming she has more realistic goals than, say, winning a World medal), I hope she's able to do it.

Very happy about many of the Sectionals outcomes (the Texan Ashleys-Lin and Kim, both of whom I really like-landed 3-3s and went 1-2 at Midwesterns! Angela Wang totally killed it! Tessa Hong won something! I found a bunch of new Intermediates and Novices I like, and most of them made Nationals!), but gutted for Emily Chan and Gabby Noullet. Both beautiful skaters who just can't seem to get the jumps done. Not to mention Vivian Le's withdrawal. Hoping next year is better for all of them.
