2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Ok? I just don't know why they keep whining about it when it happens to everyone. And it's not even that bad compared to the criticism some other skaters get. They strike me as unbelievably thin-skinned.

D/R is a very special case. They haven't had controversial wins; usually when they win people say they didn't like the style but their placement isn't wrong (I am not debating about whether you think they are overscored or not).

They get criticism directly from their competitors. You don't see the Russian ladies saying mean things about each other, Patrick and Yuzuru aren't calling each other names, Ashley and Gracie aren't criticizing each other's styles in mean ways during USFSA's commercials during Nationals pitting them against each other. Maxim Trankov has said some very mean things about them and as someone they used to respect, it is very mean spirited. His comments on banning quads were as a result of his dislike for them and always saying they are single skaters skating in pairs.

At the same time, Meagan gets a lot of Twitter comments saying she looks ugly/looks like a man. They are targeting her muscular form. I remember seeing Eric calling it out and Gabby Daleman defending her on Twitter. These comments are disgusting and she directly confronted it. Someone on Youtube was leaving comments accusing her of doping because her face looked too masculine.

Patrick and V/M don't directly confront it because they just ignore it but different people different styles. There is nothing wrong with defending themselves and calling it out.

Who else apart from Trankov has criticized them?

I don't find the criticism D/R get to be different or worse than criticism any other top teams get. Have you seen the comments on ice dance videos lately? There will always be rude people and internet trolls. They seem to conflate some disgusting comments about Meagan's face/weight/whatever with actual legitimate criticism of their skating. They literally had a five minute CBC feature about all the 'haters' they have. It's exhausting watching themselves victimize themselves over something that happens to everyone, and which they don't even get the worst brunt of. It's skating - there will always be people that don't like you. It happens to everyone and they're not special. The only thing 'special' is the way they've chosen to complain and play martyr over it.

As lyndichee has so well stated olayolay, ...this is not about being thin-skinned, "it" has gone beyond their skating to personal criticisms, unlike anything I have seen in figure skating. Eric has called it out, and so should we when we see it occurring.

From what I've read or heard about in Russian articles or commentary, Maxim's remarks about D&R have been no worse than Patrick calling his competitors "nothing special" when he took time off or saying they display no versatility (pot meet kettle...). They've received fair critiques from Trankov about how their lines don't match and hence don't have the classic pair look, how Meagan doesn't have the best skating skills, or how her lift positions aren't the nicest to look at. All valid points.

I won't defend the crap that Meagan deals with on social media because it's inexcusable, but it's no different than what other skaters have to put up with. How many times was Ashley called degrading things after being put on the Sochi team? Or Madison Hubbell being called chunky? You must live under a rock if you think this "special" criticism is reserved only for D&R or any Canadian skater (since so many on this forum have tried to pin this on a worldwide anti-Canadian conspiracy).

It's certainly fair to call out the crap people throw at them, but when playing the victim is such a strong focal point for them even after they do well, they become sore losers themselves as Eric once called Volosozhar & Trankov. They're seriously delusional if they ever think they're gonna reach a point where everyone loves them and their programs and only have nice things to say to them because no one in the skating world is at that level.

Welcome to the upper echelon of skating. Criticism awaits everyone.

What makes some of the critiques inexcusable is that they focus on the humans, not the skaters. They focus on things they cannot change or should not have to change. When you call a woman too masculine or say that a pair lacks chemistry because Eric is gay that's just too much for me. Yes. Other skaters get called names. However, with D/R the hate has reached another level.

Are you kidding me? So I guess everyone who is bullied should just keep their mouth shut and do nothing about it? They must bring it upon themselves for bringing it to our attention, right? And therefore, they deserve it? Give me a break. Victim blaming at its finest.

Just because trolls and "haters" are running rampant on the internet in today's day and age doesn't make it right, and it doesn't mean everyone should just accept it. What a cowardly society we live in where people think that just because they're hiding behind a computer screen, they can say whenever they want without repercussion.

I find it sad when anyone tries to dismiss just how serious a thing like bullying can be. When I was in High School, I had already done some commercials but it was after singing the National Anthem at a Dodger vs Giant's game that people at School knew who I was. From that moment until the time I left School ( In the first Semester of my Junior Year) I was bullied constantly.

I don't think some people realize that what they think may be simple criticism can really hurt the feelings and self esteem of people they know nothing about. Performers are often their own worst critics and I promise you that if you see it, they've seen it and are trying to fix it. It does them no good to hear criticism unless there's a solution to go along with it. Discussing Eric's personal life and how it relates to his skating should be off limits to fans and critics alike as they are two separate issues. Eric is a talented World Champion and with whom he spends his free time is simply none of our business.

Those are comments that are beyond the pale, I agree. However, like you said, they tend to conflate those comments with actual legitimate criticism....or even just harmless sniping. A user on FSU said off the cuff he wanted another team to come back and 'save us from D/R' and Meagan mentioned that in an interview as a comment she took as bullying. It's not. It's an opinion.

We need to separate homophobic, sexist, bullying comments D/R get which are legitimately disgusting and deserve to be called out, from opinions and snarky internet banter. There's a difference.

Anyone of these athletes could be your sister, brother or child...... Is this how you would like them treated or talked about?

Except, it hasn't. The only reason it appears so is because they're the only ones who are insecure enough to respond to their anonymous "haters". Many skaters put up with a ton of crap on par and worse than D&R but simply ignore it. If D&R want to address comments that are actually bullying and not some valid criticisms about how her lines are poor and how they share absolutely zero chemistry when their elements fail them, more power to them (and I support them!).

The biggest issue I find though is people like you who try to paint them as victims who have it worse than others. They don't. These claims are on par with the whiny comments on the Cup of China ladies free skate thread where posters were harping about how the sole reason people don't like Kaetlyn is because she's Canadian. PUH-LEASE.

Gravy, this is a sensitive subject for me. Here's why. Everyone knows I love Maria Butyrskaya and I promise you that she received so much flack from fans of Michelle Kwan that I almost stopped coming to GS because I couldn't believe that people felt the need to add that she was Russian to any response I posted. Things like "That Russian" Maria, instead of just saying her name. It was odd because it never seemed to happen to Irina Slutskaya, or Viki Volchkova, who both competed in her era.

The only time it's happened since, has been with Patrick Chan. Maybe it's because of my experience with Maria that I feel the need to protect him the way that I do. However, I don't want people to turn this site into a place where cat fights and internet battles over the skaters become common place. I hope that made sense.

Don't flatter yourself toots.

Figures though. Instead of conversing, you resort to a childish cop out when people are telling you things you don't like. Yawn.

Actually, Tessa Virtue, with Scott Moir's support, has confronted the criticism of her weight and body image....

She is currently a spokesperson for the Dove soap #MyBeautyMySay campaign to challenge what people say about female athletes......

Basic principle: Being a female athlete should not make you fair game for comments and remarks about your body that male athletes do not face.

Top 3 after the novice women’s short program:
1. Emma Bulawka (BC/YK) 43.27

It is surprising to see the age difference among the competitors in pre-novice and Novice.

lol the childish cop out as you say was a simple way to stop talking in circle about something we will not agree on... I could have done the agree to disagree post.. but I thought I'd give you some humour... Canadians are so generous :)
