I agree with the Russian minister of sports that a skater who wants so much to come back will come back. Moreover, she was getting stronger with each successive competition till this debacle at COR. I’m not sure what the problem was, since there are so many conflicting reports, but apparently it’s not like some new career-ending injury happened at COR. Yulia has had some very serious injuries before, and in time she rebounded from them to reach the ultimate heights. If she’s training now, things can’t be too bad. This time, for the first time in her career, Nationals will be no pressure for her at all: with four apparently healthy ladies qualifying for the GPF, I don’t think the Fed will put Yulia on the Euros/Worlds team even if she skates well at Nats. So she’ll get to skate her competitive programs in a serious, but relaxed (for her) competition. And then she’ll have plenty of time to have her medical issues clarified and resolved.

Interesting. It's quite depressing (and somewhat infuriating) if it's true--that we won't see Yulia no matter how she skates at Nationals. hwell: But you make a good point in that this, too, has positives. Finally we'll get to see her skate at Nationals without a horrendous amount of pressure. If she does well, awesome. If not, there's not exactly a huge negative effect. And yes, this means there's less risk of her rushing difficult elements and re-injuring herself.

I dont think so. Last year Anna was terrible at NHK and missed GPF, but when she medalled at Nationals she was sent to euros and worlds. Although, now that I think about it, there werent any other Russians in GPF besides Elena and Medvedeva....
But in 2014 they didnt give Julia a ticket to worlds because of not medalling at Nationals although she had made GPF that year...

This performance She brought the house to the ground! It was funny to me because I'd been following her since she won JWC but you can tell the arena wasn't aware yet of her insane flexibility and unbelievable spins. I just love the look she gives right as she's exiting the rink.

Thank you so much for the link. I gave up looking for videos of this particular performance after they all vanished all the time. Now I have it on my computer and can watch it again and again.

No problem, when I posted that I wasn't trying to get a answer only from Spiral...It brings up the 'team selection' conversation that happens as we get closer to Nationals and Euros/Worlds, because the Russian ladies are so deep, how does the team get picked.

1) Should they go with the seemingly least controversial method and say that the top 3 ladies go unless 1 gets injured
2) Should there be a 'season evaluation' done and if someone has done really well all season but wasn't in the top 3 at nationals still get to go

She is equal in both departments, as demonstrated in her beautiful photo shoot and the fact she won an Olympic Gold medal for her country at just 15. She just needs a confidence boost out on the rink now.
