well I wasn't sure about SP at beginning of the season, but after GPF I think it's just f a n t a s t i c

I am one of those people who, and this is just purely personal taste, prefers him with pieces like the Chopin but pretty much exactly the same. I never thought I'd fall in love with this program so much. I still don't like the original Prince song on its own but the second he starts skating to it, it's sold, don't even wrap that up, I am taking it with me right now. I think it's the new interaction with the audience that has tipped me over, it is fantastic.

He has never performed so well. I actually notice this more in the FS too, the acting and selling of program, but I think it'll have to be a clean one due to its nature, where he's completely at ease for it to come through fully.

I just love love love his FP of this season. I was thinking he might do a program for next season something like the best of Yuzuru Hanyu; but I actually feel we are getting one here.

Isn't he his personal trainer or something of the sort?

Same. I though he was a physical trainer or some sort. Perhaps multitask as Yuzuru's personal assistant too during competition.

I think he is? Trainer and therapist, doesn't he give him massages too or did I dream that one up? He definitely does help with a myriad of other things during competitions too.

I just recently saw these posts about him if that helps

Thanks everybody, I have also thought he must be a personal trainer of sorts. From that description in the link he sounds like a cross between a physical therapist, personal assistant and a nanny.

Notte Stellata with Tarasova, can someone translate?
(I heard on twitter that yuzuru gave his bouquet to Tat yesterday)

Tat also sounds very excited when it was Yuzu's turn when they called back all skaters to the rink.

Would love to know what she's saying there as well ><

GPF – News/Interviews/Translations

Is Yuzu still practicing 4A on his own? oh boy.

Pj Kwong posted a short interview with Yuzuru about his lucky charm!

Interview of Yuzuru, Satoko, Shoma by Oda and Matsuoka-san https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x54ypqw_yuzuru-satoko-shoma_sport

Interview of Yuzuru, Satoko, Shoma by Oda and Matsuoka-san https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x54ypqw_yuzuru-satoko-shoma_sport
I don't have the skills to translate but attemp to summarize (i may make mistakes -_-):
Oda introduced them saying how the competition was so high level but the 3 of them were able to podium. Shuzo asked for their thoughts. Shoma said he's very happy. He's not completely satisfied but is happy with 3. Shuzo & Oda both said how great the ladies were. Oda emphasized how well the ladies performed, even if they were clean they were separated by GOEs, and Satoko was able to hold it together. Satoko said she was nervous during the GPs but was able to put it together in the free at GPF. Shuzo noticed when yuzu jumped on the podium he did the finger pointing motion 4 times. Yuzu confirmed it was for the 4 straight wins. Shuzo then went on to talk about how yuzu did the talking to himself routine before performing (he said "dekiru" 3 times, "i can do it"). Satoko said she needs to do that more (i think meaning psyche herself up?) and shoma said he does something similar before competitions.
Oda and Yuzu then talked about thanking the audience, Yuzu wanted to thank everybody even the ones watching on tv or the internet. Then they talked about his SP and how he was able to connect more with the audience. When he landed the loop he felt like it was going to be a good performance and was able to calm down.
Then they talk about Satoko and her fistpump and she was practicing it backstage. So cute!
Yuzu talked about how much Satoko had changed from last season. How big her presentation has become. (Looks like he knows the training Satoko went though!)
Then they talked about how Shoma couldn't jump at all in the 6min and Oda was worried. And Shoma's ending pose he was wiping sweat away. (he did look scary lol). Then they talked about the cantilever and Yuzu gave a very technical explanation about the flexibility required in the ankles the knees.

Sorry was rushed, i have to run!

Interview with Yuzuru (he mentioned Tarasova here, I guess they were talking about his ex?). There is an interview with TAT too, hopefully someone can kindly translate this

OTHER

This programme interviewed Yuzu's teacher when he was in primary school. He said little yuzu is innocently naughty (?). And some precious scenes of little yuzu in blue hoodie
(unfortunately, there is no subtitle & it is on weibo)

Somebody remind me the function of Kikuchi-san, please?
I just recently saw these posts about him if that helps

COMMENTARY TRANSLATIONS

Eurosport E2 Dutch commentary of the FS

I think the E2 Dutch commentators are Haya Leenards and Ivo van Haaren. Jeroen Prins used to do it, but I'm not sure if he's done any commentaries this season. IIRC he was at Skate Canada (?) and NHK trophy as judge or tech controller, and this GPF commentary definitely wasn't him, either.

Can it be even better [than Nathan Chen]? He can respond to this like no other, Yuzuru Hanyu. Won the SP with great display of power, 106.53, the second-best score ever. And last year this was the competition in which he didn’t set a foot wrong in both the short and long programs. So he is in top form, exactly at the right moment, just like we’ve come to expect from him. We are very curious to see what his long program looks like. He, too, has four quads planned. Let’s see if he’ll execute them all.
His personal bests, and indeed his world records, he skated a year ago in the GPF. New jump for Hanyu this season is the quad loop, here it comes… yes, beautiful! Quad salchow. And a triple flip [Dutch “eventjes tussendoor”, meaning it’s put in between everything else like it’s nothing important, very easy and casual]. Quad salchow… no, this one doesn’t work out. Quad toeloop, he does hold on to that one. Triple axel, triple toeloop. Another triple axel, oiler (half loop?), double salchow, yeah, that was impossible to save, impossible to jump another triple there in the second jump. Oooh, a single lutz.
Oy Yuzuru Hanyu, I really thought after that first loop, which was finally completely perfect, I thought he would skate a world record, that he’d skate the rest clean, too, because he was already almost clean in Japan where he had only that little stepout I think it was in the loop, that jump he added this season. But it was followed by three small errors in the jumps. A fall at the second triple [???] salchow, well, that was a error [she means big error as opposed to small error]. Then he jumped the triple axel, single, uhm, triple axel, oiler, double salchow, where he had planned a triple salchow, so he leaves some [points] there, too, and then at the end the single lutz instead of the triple, so all things considered, he left some points in the second half of the program. Yeah, and then you don’t skate a world record, no personal best, and you don’t skate the best technical score.
15 points below Nathan Chen. Normally speaking, he should be able to close that gap [make it better, like compensate for the difference], but we’ll have to see how far into the 200 points he scores. Nathan Chen had 84 points for presentation, and the max score Hanyu can score for presentation is 100, that’s only 16 more, and he’s never going to get an average of 10 for everything, so then he isn’t going to win the FS. Yes, and maybe it’ll be close for the entire GPF [tensive?] because there are still two men to go. Well then, a glimmer of hope for the other competitors. We would have really liked to see him skate the perfect FS. He’ll have to save it for Worlds, then.
This is where it went wrong, and after that salchow I think he was so disappointed. That quad toeloop worked out okay, though also not very convincing. First axel was fine, and the second axel was fine, too, but the triple triple combination he couldn’t do after it. Of course the program is more beautiful than Nathan Chen’s, better built, Nathan Chen puts all those difficult jumps, those quads, at the start of the program, and after that he starts to skate a little bit and move, that’s very different with Hanyu. At NHK trophy he scored 197 and a half point, let’s see how far below that mark he gets. 187.37 even, and this is the third score in the FS, but he did havea big lead after the SP, so he will still be in first, but will this be enough for the win? That is still possible, but he has opened the door for Patrick Chan and Javi Fernandez.

(after Chan’s skate)
And so the ranking is completely changed, with Hanyu still the, probably even to himself surprising winner. He didn’t believe in it anymore after his performance, but his lead was large enough, an advantage of twenty points over Shoma Uno, that’s what saved him, but Patrick Chan is not going to manage that.
So only Hanyu and Rippon keep their placement, 1 and 6.
So the winner is Yuzuru Hanyu, wins the title for the fourth time in a row, equaling Yevgeni Plushenko, who also won the GPF four times, but not four times in a row.
Nathan Chen and Shoma Uno steal the show, but a competition is over two events, and in that regard Hanyu was the strongest and ends ahead of Chen and Uno.

[while they’re building the medal ceremony podiums and showing some highlights]
Hanyu does win, but does so with the third score in the FS. It didn’t go smoothly, although it started out wonderfully with that quad loop, and you think, if that works out, the most difficult element in his program, then he’ll go “all the way” (in English), but he didn’t yet. Let’s hope for his sake that he’s saving it for Worlds. He does win, and stays ahead of the young ones Chen and Uno.

Here's a French channel, in the meantime:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0Vg_yoSyhI
My French brain and my English brain don't meet very often, so I'll give it a try, but in advance, I ask for forgiveness. I am definitely NOT a translator (which is a job I greatly admire).

NM = Nelson Monfort (male commentator); AD : Annick Dumont (female commentator)

NM says a few things about the announcer.

NM : [the announcer] presents Yuzuru Hanyu, Japan. Winner of this Grand Prix, Two times world champion (mistake on his part here... one we wish was true ), Olympic Champion, Quadruple Japan Champion... well, let's stop with his credentials. Some consider him already as one of the best skater in history, or even THE best skater in history. He mixes incredibly well absolute grace and unparalleled technical difficulties.

(Skating starts)

NM : Quadruple Grand Prix Winner.

(more skating)

NM : A Biellman, very rare for men.

NM : This swan is spreading its wings in a magnificient way. Delicate.

NM : (he's being all lyrical in his words, I honestly can only translate words for words, because I have absolutely no idea if there is a way to translate with a saying or something, sorry) : The softness (or finesse), this beautiful aristocracy of strenght (what he means is : it takes incredible strenght AND incredible control of your strenght to be able to achieve that level of delicacy).

NM : A triple Axel, slightly saved, but saved (laughing).

NM : He personnifies the swan, it's perfect, it's perfect. It's soft, it's delicate, it's... light, it's... ah, look at that final spin, look... it's a swan... It's both a withe swan and a black swan, the top and the bottom, but it's perfection.

AD : How beautiful is that program. How do I prefer it to his free skate. Of course, there aren't the same obligatory technical elements, but it was so beautiful, so well interpreted. It's rare to see Yuzuru Hanyu free himself artistically at this level. To embody such a strong theme, the swan, but it was so good to see him being touched and being touching. It's rare, and I understand him, because in his free skate, he's planning four quadruples this year.

NM : FOUR?!?

AD : Yes, four

NM : And two in the short ?

AD : that's it. So he's competing with six quadruples. He landed the two in the short, three in the the free, a fourth quad with a fall, but so honorable since the performance was so ambitious and courageous. It allowed him to win this competition, even though he didn't win the free skate. But I was full of admiration for this artistic and technic performance. It was, very simply moving and magnificient.

(then they talk about something else).

(it's not perfect, but it's the most I can do, if someone can do better, please do so )

British commentator E2 introduced Yuzu by saying that where he goes, he's the focal point. Olympic champion, etc.

Rapturous applause, he is a genius. A lot of Johnny Weir in that performance. Not perfect in the free program northis exhibition, but certainly in the short. Commentator thinks that no matter what, he will be the favorite to win the world title in Boston (!) in March.
Just wonderful, great strength, mental and physical, a dream to watch out there on the ice. Hanyu apparently said that he felt very conscious of the crowd, but the commentator feels it didn't show.

I'm getting so used to hearing this way-too-vocal version of my dearly beloved Saint-Saens swan, I'm actually starting to love it.

edit to add: and some Dutch stuff:
no intro at all, the Dutch audio stream has some remainder from the commercials over it. Very weird. Thankfully it stopped when Hanyu started skating. ;-)

Yuzuru Hanyu, he has given his opponents a glimmer of hope again after his free skate, but he is still the man that everybody looks to, he makes it look so easy, and he proved to be capable of a free skate with four quads, well not entirely perfect yet, he is not that far yet, but if he can combine it with the beauty which he displays in his programs, he has two weapons. The absolute favorite the world title, although these past two years it's gone to Fernandez. That was mostly due to Hanyu's injuries (I think he says multiple), he is still human [he has human 'flaws'], sometimes they're invisible and then it's pure enjoyment to watch. The man who turned 22 two days ago and already has an entire career behind him, Olympic champion, world champion in the same time, and now for the fourth time in a row the title in the GPF, which places him at the same level as Plushenko. Well, he can still go on for quite some years, so we won't be surprised if between now and a year, the record is in hands of the Japanese (I guess he is refering to getting the GPF title more than four times?).

Did Tatiana commentate on Yuzu's EX performance?
If so, what did she say?
My friend gave me the gist:
She gave him the music
Grishin liked the way they choreographed it
TAT said he deserved to win with the two quad edge jumps in the SP, which is historic
Then they mostly shut up for the duration
After she said he is amazing athlete and Grishin said that he even tried to save the exit from the axel and make it into a step
Then they showed him in close up and TAT said oh my sweetie and my dear human being

And then my friend said that TAT said the Japanese are thanking her for the music in the lobby all the time.

If anyone is interested I made english subtitles of what Annick Dumont and Nelson Montfort said of Yuzu's exhibition program today

My attempt at translating this :D

By fourth consecutive year, he wins the GPF, Yuzuru Hanyu with a considerable difference without being his best FP this season, he had a difference of 11 points over Nathan Chen. Four consecutive years in the final, four consecutive years won, this man who in the last two years he's been second at World's.

Always with very very pretty exhibition programs, Yuzuru Hanyu has an extraordinary sensibility, he is a skater who feels really good with melodic music, classical music... You'll never see him with loud music, he feels better with these kind of tones, more peaceful, more expressive, leaning towards classical music.

Well, there you have him, the man to beat. He just turned 22 this wednesday, december 7th he turned 22 Yuzuru Hanyu from Sendai who lives and trains in Toronto with Brian Orser, teammate (training mate?) and friend of Javier Fernández, whom he is always cheering for from the benches. A very very spiritual man, always accompanied by an spiritual guide.

In the meantime, here is what the Dutch commentators had to say in the recap program about the SP and FS:

(SP) This is Yuzuru Hanyu, who came another step closer to perfection, here in the SP in Marseille. He tried a quad loop and landed it, maybe not entirely beautiful (that sounded weird even in Dutch!), but he landed it, and he finished it with a gorgeous salchow combination and a triple axel. 106.53 even, and that brings him very close to that world record of his, 110 points in the SP. Hanyu and Chan veeeeery good.

(FS) And we continue with Yuzuru Hanyu, in the lead after the SP. He skated so terrific at the NHK trophy, two weeks in his home country.
Yes, and Hanyu also goes for four quads, and he has a better presentation than Chen. And here the quad loop. Quad salchow. Oooh, he falls at the quad salchow, the second one he tried. Oh, he recaptures hiself at the quad toeloop, but he does appear to be missing some energy today. Triple axel triple toeloop. And the second triple axel, he almost stumbles there, somehow manages to add a double salchow. Opens the lutz at single. He had a very difficult time, Yuzuru Hanyu, but still jumped four quads and two triple axels, one mistake, one big mistake with that quad salchow, and for the very first time in the GP competitions, entirely clean, that loop. And here the first quad salchow, it was good. His program is much better balanced than Nathan Chen, because not all jumps after another, but the spins and step sequences are there in between [the jumps]. Triple flip here on the screen, and here it is, the second salchow, landed at troughly a quart (I guess that means three-quarters in English?), couldn’t quite manage the landing, but almost immediately afterwards he did the quad toeloop. Well, the FS by Nathan Chen was better, but he had enough of a lead, and of course the presentation. But he does lose the free skate to not only Nathan Chen, but also Shoma Uno, and that means that even Yuzuru Hanyu cannot afford to make too many mistakes, but there is space for improvement, including this jump, that double salchow should’ve been a triple instead of a double, and if he also lands the second quad salchow and doesn’t open the lutz, we may expect to see him get a lot extra points, should he skate entirely clean, we hope that, of course, at the end of the season at Worlds. Yuzuru Hanyu had enough left of his lead to win here, for the second (!!!!) time in a row he wins the Final.

I just love love love his FP of this season. I was thinking he might do a program for next season something like the best of Yuzuru Hanyu; but I actually feel we are getting one here.

A variation of the best of ... Why not a DVD of Yuzuru Hanyus best of program, and think of the extra material. Hopefully they would also but english sub-text. Think about it, every time you feel :sad21: you put your Yuzuru dvd on, and :)

Many thanks to Jeffrey Buttle for choreographing such an amazing short program for Yuzu once again.
I really love the song on its own, too. I listen to it on my way work and think about the lyrics, which I really like but I find it sad. My favourite parts are 'Instead of asking him how much of your time is left, Ask him how much of your mind, baby', and of course the famous lines, 'And if the elevator tries to bring you down, Go crazy, punch a higher floor'.

Whether he skates it clean at Worlds or not, I'm sure I'll go crazy to watch him live and cheer for him in the arena. :o:

I will be there! I have my tickets for men's short program and long program. I have 2 additional tickets too that I am looking to sell (one for the short and one for the long). I haven't bought tickets for the other events but I want to play it by ear. I'll maybe attend pairs and ice dance shorts and then then ladies long. I'm still deciding.

Prince isn't everyone's cup of tea but it's a classic song to a classic movie and he won an Oscar for a song that's on an album with this song. So Yuzu could certainly do worse, lol.

You're going to worlds too? The more the merrier! I'll cheer for him no matter what. I still stood for him and Shoma in Boston for the LPs and waved the Japanese flag for them. Part of me feels like seeing him skate this clean is like winning a lottery, lol. You can only hope to be so lucky!

I wonder how he'll skate at Nationals... Last year the pressure of perfection weighed heavily, he was injured, and he was very fatigued, and this year circumstances are quite different. There is certainly pressure from Shoma, and fatigue from the last two big competitions, but I wonder if he'll do a bit better than last year because he is still going upupup rather than peaking... or if that fatigue will play a factor with too much, too soon. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I was a MJ fan rather than a Prince fan growing up, but I did love many of his songs. I loved Let's Go Crazy, but my favourite was When Doves Cry. Now that would be difficult to skate to... and choreograph. Let's Go Crazy is a much better choice to skate to and I think Jeffrey did a great job. I think Yuzu is starting to own this program now. If anything, for the future, it has definitely taught him/forced him, to reach out into the audience more and play to them. It's like show skating in a competitive environment.

I love his music but I couldn't have imagined a season ago a program like this..not only for Yuzuru, but for anyone. I am amazed by Jeff's skills as a choreographer and I am even more amazed by Yuzuru, how he is able to sell this program in a way like no one is able to. He is the most versatile male skater I have ever seen.

Yes, I am going to Worlds. I've been to a couple of Europeans and Junior Worlds but never went to a senior Worlds, so it is the most perfect opportunity to go as it is in Europe. I couldn't be happier but I don't want to think about now how Yuzu will skate there, because if I think of something too hard then I jinx it and that's the least I want for him.:drama: It will be different in the arena, though, where I'll give 200% of my energies to cheer for him!

Thanks. i want to go at least Men's event. i must hurry up to get a good seat at reasonable price. i remember pamigena posted the site of the arena and got some explanation, but i missed! this thread runs so fast!
Looking forward to meeting up some members there! i wish US men get back three spots (but it's almost certain to see the current US skaters!)

I just pray that they get rid of that "breathing" pause in Hanyu's FS where he comes to a complete stop. It takes all the wind from his sails. He has to regain his speed for his 4S combo from zero. I think that's why he's having such a hard time with that combo. I think if he got rid of the pause it would be smooth sailing from there.

Do you guys know if we could live stream Japan Nat'l at all? I was in Japan last year, so I could watch it live on TV with around an hour delay if I remember correctly. Some people say it is impossible to watch it online (><)

well I wasn't sure about SP at beginning of the season, but after GPF I think it's just f a n t a s t i c

I felt the same way after seeing it at AC, but now adore the program. I really prefer it to Hope and Legacy as he shows so much personality and energy. It's just a lot of fun!!
