2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

Oftentimes people's favorites have nothing to do with who is the "it" girl or whatever. It seems like Evgenia is probably still somewhat in the position of an "upstart" like Tara Lipinski or Sasha Cohen and people are upset that their faves like Yulia or Michelle Kwan have been "replaced" at the top. Meanwhile Anna P. is like a Nicole Bobek who is actually making the most of her potential and talent (unlike the actual Nicole Bobek did).

Ah ok not a fan of her though I just can't believe that she's not popular even with her accomplishments..With regards to Yulia's popularity, she was a darling in sochi so its kinda hard to top that..

I think Evgenia is popular enough considering she only debuted as a senior last season. Skaters who have medaled at Olys are really on another level of fame and attract a lot of fans who aren't necessarily fans of skating in general. Since Yulia attracted more than her share of crazies, it's not surprising that some of them are so hateful toward the girl who they perceive as "Tutberidze's favorite child."

I really don't understand what is so difficult about appreciating all of these girls as individuals, or why some feel it's necessary to bash the rival of their favorite, as if it will make a difference to their results. Of course you will always prefer some skater's style over another, but all of them work incredibly hard, and beat countless other girls whose names will never be well known, just to make it into the Russian team. Evgenia has plenty of admirable qualities no matter how much you might dislike her programs. And the same is true for all of the rest of them. I'm not sure why respect is such a difficult concept.

These things are cyclical, too...I can't say much about Russian forums, but Anna was really not popular here until very recently. Just look at some older threads & you can find all kinds of awful comments about her falls, people saying her career was over (lol), etc. She matured, and Evgenia will also mature in her own time. Then people will find some other skater to bash for their lack of maturity or whatever other flaws they can find. Rinse and repeat.

When Anna was robbed at WC 2014, I remember people complained about her traveling spins and her un-refinement. She has become more beautiful to watch, people's perception has changed.
I don't get why Zhenia is not popular in Russia. To Asians, she is very pleasing to the eyes. Maybe because she's childlike and Westerners prefers sexy style?

I think calling it a "sexy style" is too narrow. But I agree there is a childlikeness to Evgenia's skating - which I don't want to mean the same as juniorish. The maturity of a senior but there's an innocence/girlishness/lightness to her skating and performances. A lack of intensity. Even during the 9/11 program there is a lack of intensity. IMO, it is something she shares with Satoko. Then there are skaters like Anna and Gracie (sans mistakes) who bring an intensity to their skating/performances that is not necessarily sexy, but is still very different than what Evgenia and Satoko are doing.

That said, I do think physical elements play a role. By the end of last season, Yulia's body looked far too mature for the more girlish costumes she was wearing. And Satoko and Evgenia would probably not be able to do sexy programs (like Ashley's, for example), in part because they do not have the physicality.

Well, these girls are all very pretty and lovely. But if we have to compare, I agree that Yulia at Sochi was the stronger image, she was doll-like and resilient. It was everything that came to the right time and right place for Yulia to become a star. And of course, being blonde helps too. Yulia has it all to be a star/princess. She has the wow spin and the unique aura. And of course, the Olympic coverage.
Zhenia is very cute but more like the type of girl next door. That said, as an Asian I really like to look at her. She has the gentle and calm style. She is the kind that the more you look at her, the more you like her.

Are you guys kidding me? Medvedeva is quite popular in Russia, a lot of young girls look up to her. My mom is her fan as well, and she's been watching figure skating for the last 30 years or so.
All the things about ethnicity or whatever are only supported by a tiny group of online trolls who troll all figure skaters including Lipnitskaya, Sotnikova, Pogorilaya, etc.

IKR! I never saw any complaints about THAT in the forums. I dont think we should take trolls into account...
She has a fair share of admirers also. Not compared to Yulia obviously.
I think she will be more popular once she tries diff style in the future. She's only been in seniors not too long

& ironically actually for some people her consistency may not be very appealing for some b/c it lacks DRAMA! Whats the point of being emotionally involved if you know that a skater is 90% sure to win...

there's a lovely fan vid about Nastya in her fanfest so I decided to repost it here :luv17:

Here's my edit for princess Nastya. Wish her good luck for her first Russian Nationals!

I'm a westerner and i like Evgenia.

I think some westerner dislikes her because she is winning everything: Kurt Browning's commentary on her programs is almost like Tracy Wilson biased commentary back in the days, to me that's a disgusting way to see figure skating. So why care? Haters gonna hate.

In Russia it's different, there is the rivalry Moscow vs SPB, but she is indeed very famous now so again who cares about the haters?

Then you should practice what you preach and stop hating on a certain young Russian male skater. Or maybe that's just too hard for you to do.

Some posters mixed up the FS forums with the real life. On Fs forums the posters are only a little part of those persons who love this beautiful sport.

The reason as to why enough people, to make the fact noticable, dont like Medvedeva is that Eteri Tutberidze, being and incredibly ambitious coach, ruthlessly exploits the COP. They hate her the same way people hate Lenin, for ruthlessy exploiting Russia's incredible crisis caused by monarchy, for personal gain. The same way why people hate Stalin, for his ruthless exploitation of the Russian people's blind trust in a firm hand.

I'm obviously not comparing Eteri to either of these two brilliant murderers (despite having Shelepen, Lipa, Pitkeev, Tsurskaya, "stumbling" on her path to success. But the scale and nature of these similarities is to great to make a real comparison). What I'm trying to say is that people dont like the idea of ruthless exploitation... or any exploitation.

A big portion of this hate is transfered toward Medvedeva because she is the one winning medals and setting records, not Eteri. That's basic, faulty, human psychology. Oh, and Medvedeva doesn't get punished for her mistakes exactly due the COP exploitation. There isn't really anything to cling on to. My train of thought is that when your system is getting exploited, change the system. However, when the sport is inherently subjective, doing that is very, very difficult.

I'm not sure that everyone will understand my thoughts, but that is up for discussion.

Happy holidays to everyone and enjoy the Russian National Championship!

Any coach who doesn't ruthlessly exploit the COP isn't doing their job as well as they could.

Anyway, Do we know something about Liza?

I wish a 3A for Christmas :)

Someone on the Russian Nationals General Info thread said that she'd been reported doing two 3As - one landed, one fall. Of course that was a while ago, so don't know about since.
