2017 U.S. Nationals Championship Ladies FS

Assuming the Nathan wins the men's event I believe we have never had so many Asian Americans as title holders, a positive milestone. I meant only to recognize this achievement in a positive way.

Again apologies and goodbye.

Just a couple of Chens and a couple of Shibutanis. :)

Isn't Madison Chock half Chinese?

The way I see it play out in Helsinki:
1. Russia
2. Russia
3. Japan
4. USA
5. Russia
6. Italy
7. Canada
8. Japan
9. Japan
10. USA

This isn't a bad list but, I'd push that Canadian 7th place into a 4th place finish and maybe 3rd. I have feeling Kaetlyn is going to come up big at worlds. Especially after the scare she just got from Gabby. Very much like Karen and Ashley except Kaetlyn kept her title after losing the FP to Gabby.

Gracie went to her old coach and afterward claimed she was fixed and on her way back to form ... after *two* weeks. If that were true, well, Frank would look pretty bad, wouldn't he? But as we saw, it wasn't. I feel sorry for Frank. She's probably the reason he's lost all his hair.

Really? All that talk in the media about how she deserved to go to Worlds and invoking the name of goddess Michelle Kwan in her interview and she's not even training right? Smh.
I kind of wonder if Frank might drop her then. Didn't he do that to one of his skaters before? I can't remember who.

I am trying to reply without seeing what others wrote. Here is my opinion, for what it is worth.

1. I liked Ashley's long program better, and probably would've given it to her. It was close. I also didn't realize she singled that jump, I thought it was just a little dance hop, not a miss. Either way, both women skated their hearts out, so congratulations to both of them!

2. Actually, I thought the best of the night--or one of the best--was Caroline! So glad to see her again, but she didn't do her signature spin, I don't think. Does she do it any more?

3. Tara and Johnny were on the money about Mirai. She was so cute back in the day. Remember that Carmen? Or when she was supposed to be a doll? She never quite found an adult persona on the ice. And if she does the axel safely, just do it, she has nothing to lose at this point.

4. If they send Gracie to 4 Continents, fine. If they put her ahead of the pack and make her an alternate, fine. But if they bump someone, the committee will lose much of its credibility.
They should just make a rule. Grand Prix Finale medalist: automatically on the team. Not: Have to earn your spot at Nationals. Gracie did neither. Whatever her problem is, she has exactly one year to get over it or find another path in life.

I think USFS knows what they are doing. They are actually quite smart to let Karen win. They know Ashley will be able to get top 5 at worlds, they need to prop up Karen so she can score well at Worlds so the US will get 3 spots. You know we can't count on Gracie anymore.

That doesn't work... Look how Polina turned out

Amazing energy inside the arena tonight :eeking: so much to say, so little patience with typing on my phone.

First though, tonight's Tara report...I was seated about halfway across the arena from the Kiss and Cry, and during the quiet parts Mirai's program, I heard a voice speaking very loudly and distinctly from that direction. Can you guess whose voice rings out through an entire packed arena?

Anywho... there were so many amazing moments tonight. I don't know what happened to Karen Chen, but she is absolutely magnificent. You could just feel the energy rise every time she landed a jump. Im so glad I got to witness this, because this was a truly special underdog moment. I was also thrilled to see the ultimate underdog (see avatar) hand her the trophy. Ashley also gave it her all, and I think that's what makes Karen's win all the more special--she really didn't rely on others' mistakes. Mariah Bell was of course a delight as well. You could just see her relax as the program went on. I would be thrilled if the podium were the world team.

I'm sure the night's tragedies have been rehashed already, so I'll just share my favorite non-podium moments. Courtney Hicks redeemed herself in the best way possible, Caroline Zhang got a full standing ovation, Amber Glenn was fantastic, and the audience support for Tessa Hong was really great.

What about Ashley shin, Bradie or Paige...

Despite what Tara says, Paige does not have a consistent 3F and 3Lz.

Ashley Shin came in last here.

Bradie is another option, but I think Amber is stronger overall. We sent Bradie last year. Let's give Amber a shot. Plus, Amber is younger than them, which means she has more time to get where she'd need to be to be relevant internationally one day.

Karen: love love love. She has such an aesthetically pleasing technique and well-developed artistry for her age. If she's on in Helsinki, she could be a force to be reckoned with :D
Ashley: Great free skate but I am kind of over this whole Ashley Wagner narrative. I feel like she is always trying to create a character for herself: she has to be an underdog and be third place after the short program, or she has to be "in a really difficult position." She claims she skates like a veteran, but she does not have those skating skills and attention to detail. She does have a lot of pressure on her shoulders, but at some point I feel like she just needs to skate. I was hoping to see her improve on all the things that cost her on the Grand Prix: levels, underdeveloped transitions in the short, underrotations, but she didn't, and it cost her a national title that was really hers to lose. Still rooting for her though: I'll take the real emotion of Exogenesis over the Russian ladies' elevator music program any day.
Mariah: She's a delight to watch. I will probably throw something if they don't send her to worlds.
Mirai: :( :( :( I have been waiting for her to come back since her Pirates of the Caribbean performance at 2010 worlds and this past year has been so exciting. She is a real firecracker though and I still prefer her artistry over most of the US ladies, so I have hopes for her for 2018.
Gracie: I don't even know anymore. I feel like she needs time off the ice, but at the same time isn't that exactly what got to her during the Grand Prix? It is quite clear she doesn't really enjoy skating anymore and is only skating because of the pressure she and the USFS have put on her.

Agree. There is something about Ashley that is off putting for me, and something about her skating that is disengenuous. Tonight I loved the pure, raw honest beauty of Karen Chen's skating.

I think they'd be nuts to send Gold. She hasn't had even a decent competition all season and this certainly wasn't it. I think she needs to take this time now between this season and next and decide why she's skating and if she really wants to continue. This season is a wash for her. I think others have far more likelihood for scoring better at worlds, and have earned the spots.
I'm not so sure... I think skatinggold could be right and for the reasons she stated. However I think if that were to happen other strategic calculations would also come into effect I should think. Questions of reliability, experience, reputation and last but not least, the "fresh, new and better" factor would all be discussed. If one were to balance out all those factors I'm not so sure it would be a given that Mariah would be "odd man out".

I wish I could but I am being realistic. Osmond may even win the Short BUT she will most definitely bomb the free. She has not skated a clean one all season even at Nationals. And that's when she had lesser competition. The toughest she had was GPF and this time it would be even more crowded. I hope she proves us wrong but I am not putting my bets on her.

I say this again, as someone who loves performers and respects the power of the performance .... what international love has Mariah received thus far?

Actually, this is a rhetorical question, because when Jason wins silver at Skate America or wins the US Classic, it's "home cooking". I don't think so, but that's what I hear. So I still remain unconvinced that she will receive international love, but I am all for the top three going. And hoping that they do get international love;)

Something else I forgot to mention: why is Ashley trying to put that 2T at the end of her lutz? She never had a problem adding the 2T to her 2A at the beginning of her program, and trying the 3Z-2T at the end hasn't worked for her all season and only adds something like .1 to her base value. It seems a little silly to me.

Why even have a competition, then? Or ... why even make Gracie skate at all? Just give her the spot outright!

I think the U.S. relies too heavily on the system of propping people up. The favored one begin to rely on it, and the skating skills decline.

my prediction

1. Evgenia
2-3. Pogo, Satoko: close, depends on UR calls
4-5. Ashley, Kaetlyn: both pretty inconsistent but will get high PCS
6-7. Carolina K, Sotskova

Gabby, Mai M, Wakaba,...
so we need to have the best case scenario with Ashley AND have the best case scenario with either Mariah or Karen. TBH, maybe (probably a terrible idea) since we're losing the third spot anyways might as well send Gracie cause she has a 0.01% chance of skating OK and getting three spots, while the other two have a 0% chance...
