US Team: 4CCs and Worlds (updated)

Not to me because I don't like to play what-ifs. You were the one doing that so I was pointing out the fallacies in your argument.

I agree that I left out a piece of relevant information in error but I believe my reasoning was sound.

Hasn't Bradie Tennell already had enough chances at Junior Worlds?
Seriously. When was the last time an 18 year old won Junior Worlds. :noshake:

Bradie went once before, last year. From a usfsa viewpoint, the issue isn't likely winning Junior Worlds as much as it is getting as much international experience (and ranking points) as possible for younger seniors such as Bradie who might be in position for Worlds/Olympics next year.

So happy to see Mirai being able to step-up and ecstatic for Karen. Mariah not so sure about but she has put together a solid year and despite some mistakes at Nationals did well - a large gap between Mirai and Caroline so no other decision or argument could really be made.

Seeing the names of Amber and Bradie, a surprise and shock, respectively. Amber at least has the content to be competitive and if she can keep it together, this will be her chance to launch herself! I really wish her well! Bradie, on the other hand, not so sure what I am missing. Tessa is a beautiful skater and will make a mark in this sport, but she was unable to come close to the podium in her first 2 JGPs and then bombed at Nationals. Starr finished 2nd with 150 something which will not be competitive internationally.

Very happy with Jason being selected though not sure he can get the job done, will certainly need to do better than he did at Nationals to at least be competitive. Vincent I do not think could do any better so keeping him where he seems to be most comfortable and allowing him to redeem himself for the last JGP performance will give him more experience and more exposure.

Skaters that would surely score above Vincent: Hanyu, Fernandez, Chan, Chen, Uno, Jin
Skaters that would likely score above Vincent: Kolyada, Ten.
In all likelihood Vincent would be looking at 9th place so Chen would probably need a podium place to secure that third spot.

More or less the same?

aren't you all forgetting Reynolds - he is improving quite rapidly and has multi quads?
I imagine USFS rationale was that Jason is very consistent and has the respect of the international judges and so is less likely to have the kind of disaster that Nam suffered last year whereas Vincent is much less recognized internationally and had a mediocre jr season . Just my thoughts !

So are you saying that Bradie should have not chosen? Or that you're shocked that she was?

I think it's a given that Jason needs to do better than what he did at Nationals -- and I think his satisfaction was because he there was such uncertainty from him on how he would do day-to-day. But as I said previously, Jason opened a HUGE door (and so did Adam due to his unfortunate injury) for others vying for that World spot by not being at 100 percent and only Vincent Zhou (and Nathan, obviously but I think that was a given) really walked through it.

I think Vincent will do great at Jr. Worlds, though as I said before, I wouldn't have had a problem if he was sent to Worlds, and prefer it in some ways. Jason has a lot of pressure now to justify his selection and I hope he lives up to it.

Given that Jason was still walking around in a boot off ice, I'm wondering if he will be ready for 4CCs in three weeks? He said in the mixed zone that he's doing better and not in much pain. I was impressed he was able to land both 3As in the FS despite just resuming jumps last week. I guess it's up to him and team KoRo.

I think the overall choices were pretty sound and I think Vincent will do well at Junior Worlds, and is not quite seasoned enough to go to Helsinki. If Jason can still be top 10 and Nathan gets on the podium, which I think he will, we can get 3 spots for the Olympics.

And great that Mirai will go to 4CC's despite some speculation that Ashley was going for the Olympic test run. Other than getting a feel for the venue and the rink in South Korea, are there other benefits for Olympic hopefuls to attend?

Jason will, I feel sure, make every effort to keep whatever promises he has made, but if he is still walking around in a boot, there has to be concern that the intense step up in training he will have to do will aggravate the current injury or cause a new one. Is there no appeal process regarding the min tes scores required for 4cc and worlds? Hard to understand why Raf would let Ashley miss
the opportunity for an "Olympic test run". Glad, however, that Mirai might have the chance to end the season on a more hopeful note. I think Zhang should have been given something--what a comeback!!!!

I think there will be incremental goals for Jason and his team at 4CC, which is why he wants to go. There are no spots on the line at 4CC, so he can skate to the best of his ability and let the chips fall where they may.

Given all the engineer metaphors, it sounds like they took a very methodological approach to his recovery (and approach to competition) thus far and I expect that will continue going forward. I think the decision to go for two 3As was made that morning based on how he did in his warm-up. They had a back up plan of a 1-3A FS as late as Saturday based on Jackie Wong's tweets.

Jason Brown has the components that make all skaters stop and watch. I get that the quad is golden but Vincent's program does nothing for me and frankly I think he was given gifts with the component marks. That's taking nothing from him in terms of his jumps and raising maturity. He's young and probably hasn't even seen "Casablanca" and has no idea how to portray the swagger of Rick. But that will be forgiven in Juniors. If Jason can do two clean programs at Worlds he has a shot at top 5. Nathan definitely has a shot at the top 5 and maybe even podium. I believe the magic placement number is 13 for 3 spots next year and I think they picked the men skaters with the most potential to earn that.

So are you saying that Bradie should have not chosen? Or that you're shocked that she was?

Both. I think all top athletes who compete in individual sports need to earn the right to be considered the best in their respective sports. Once they do this, they should be able to then showcase their abilities to a wider audience. With that being said, there are only so many chances that someone can drop the ball before it is time to move on.

Bradie was the 2015 Jr Champ so she earned that right to compete in front of a larger audience. However, she was given 3 opportunities to represent the US internationally and unfortunately she was unable to break the top 5, let alone make the podium in any event. To me, one time is nerves, the crowd, the travel, etc. The second time one knows what to expect and what needs to be done behind the scenes to make the international competition more competitive. The third time one should be able to showcase the talent that created the opportunity to compete internationally. So to me, Bradie has had 3 opportunities but has been unable to deliver. We need to compete with the Russians, Japanese and now Koreans - if we keep holding our breathe hoping that one day talent will produce results we are in for another 10 year drought.

I'm happy with Jason going to Worlds. He doesn't have a quad, but a lot of men that do are prone to meltdowns. If Vincent doesn't skate well, he doesn't have the PCS to save him, whereas Jason does. I don't expect Jason to come in fourth but he could still do really well; Adam came in 6th last year without rotating a quad. We're seeing more quads this year, but it's mostly guys that would have placed in front of Jason even without the added difficulty.

I agree, namely on the fact that I felt that both Amber and Bradie had "moved on" to senior-level international competition. Trying to juggled both junior- and senior-level programs is hard enough for those who had been doing juniors internationally but preparing for U.S. Nationals. Neither Bradie nor Amber have even competed in juinors this season. But I suppose the sub-par results from JGP have them hoping they can change the U.S. fortune.

The problem is that JASON HAS AN INJURY. He is going to 4CC, so his injury is unlikely to heal. That means no quad practice for Worlds and possibly still having a chronic injury for Worlds. Jason's ability to place high is limited by his lack of a quad. At Worlds 16, all of the men who placed in the top 12 attempted a quad in the FS, and most landed at least one quad.

Nathan should have no problem placing top 5, but Jason placing 8th or lower is certainly not a sure thing.

Seems to me that both Bradie and Amber are going to have to skate a junior ISU event at some point before JW so as to establish JUNIOR TES minimums for SP and FS, just as Vincent has to skate a senior ISU event before Worlds to get the senior TES minimums (as first alternate to an injured Jason, he must do this).

Jason said in his conference call that he had restored 80 percent of the strength of his leg, so he's closer to recovery/healing than not. I don't know why the folks at OTC would clear him to even jump if the injury wasn't healing.

Jason has been nothing but upfront about his injury and where he stands day-to-day as he recovers and I expect that if he senses that he is not where he needs to be, he will take the necessary actions and Vincent will be able to step in.
