Javier Fernandez

Hielo Español has talked to Javi about whether he plans on changing something regarding his quads. They haven't revealed anything yet, but it seems like they will soon publish the interview. He is working on some new stuff and something "spectacular"
However, they said he is not going to play risky just for the sake of doing it, but it's nice to know he has a couple of aces under his sleeve :)
The only realistic change I can think of is 4Lo.

I wrote and posted a report last night, but apparently deleted it accidentally... So here we go again...

I was a bit worried that he might skip the evening practice (many did) and was quite relieved to see the selfie posted by Verner - at least Javi was here in Ostrava... But no need for that: he was first on the ice wearing not his normal practice clothes but rather what looked like Danny Boy pants and a longsleeved T. (Eg this video https://www.instagram.com/p/BPqOKduhThZ/)

Leaning on the borders before starting and got off to a sluggish start with two doubled-out loops. He was second in the music rotation and did not have time for more before Elvis was on. No jumps in the runthrough, but otherwise good.

Afterwards he went through all the jumps with some problems with the lutz, axels easy, the same with the 3F combo. The quads needed some time to emerge, but they did in the end. Although not the combo. Malagueña step sequence as the last element.

Brian worked him right through to the last moments in the session with the jumps and some stroking exercises to cool down. Javi was all but begging to stop a few minutes before the actual end, but no mercy.

Then he signed and took selfies with fans and was off... And that was it for men's practices until Saturday morning and FS. The rest is at the practice rink where us mortals have no access.

I saw a couple of interviews that came out yesterday

El Mundo: https://www.google.it/amp/s/amp.elmundo.es/deportes/2017/01/24/588677d6468aeb04268b45b5.html
RTVE https://www.google.it/amp/amp.rtve....ticion-diaria-acabo-hecho-polvo/1478681.shtml

In the second one he says that since returning to Canada he has been ill for 2 weeks and off ice... So no wonder the programs are as they were in the fall!

I also saw the HE teaser on future things and can hardly wait...

The ladies SP practice is on its way. Trying to stay awake after 5 hours of sleep :-D

Thanks for the report, Eppen!!! Good that he arrived early in Ostrava and skipped the Spanish event!!!

So sad to hear that he was ill and had to be off-ice for two weeks, but hopefully he will be okay in his programs at Europeans and manages after the event to train fully for the Worlds .

Let's celebrate Javi's 200th page! :hap10:

I hope Javi does well at Euros, so we can forget about the mishap at GPF indeed.

3Lz+3T+3Lo bv 15.40... no comments on which of the current combos will go... GPF mishap due to nonsports related things on his mind - the show?- that habe now passed...

Hmm interesting. If he adds that combo, he has to make a few changes elsewhere, most notably lose the 3T from his 4S combo because of the Zayak rules. I think he could do a 2Lo instead of a 2T after either 4S or 3A to add just a little bit more BV, in which case his layout could be:

4T
4S+2T
3A+2Lo
4S x
3Lz+3T+3Lo x
3A x
3F x
3S x

This layout would give him a jump BV of 80.91 vs the 79.23 from his current layout. I don't know though if he could always get the speed into the 3Lz and maintain as much of it as possible to pull off the next two triples with secure landings. His 3Lz+3T used to give him trouble sometimes, which to me at least looked mostly because of lack of speed going into the 2nd jump. On the other hand, it's better for him to do a combo after the 3Lz than the 3F, because the latter is the one that he sometimes gets the unclear edge calls on, so would make more sense as the standalone jump of the two.

He actually said that, even though he was sick, he didn't stop training. Those lazy days are definitely long gone
I can't wait to see that 3-3-3 in competition!
Oh and thanks so much for your report eppen! And happy 200 pages :cheer:

Ah, it's easy to lose details trying to understand a language you really don't know ;-) it's brilliant to have the help of native speakers like xibsuarz!

Thanks also for the tech analyses on the jump contents - I wonder if the 333 is now done for getting a feeling if change rather than for real advancement?!

Hello, everyone!

I'm here because I need some help and I think you might be excellent in this... I'm a journalism student and after a lot of tryings, I have finally an interview with Javier Fernández! I'm so, so excited that I don't know what to do. The problem is that I'm a fan of his but on a 'amateur' level, so to say, I follow the competitions and I always try to see him, but I don't know a lot about technique. I'm coming to this forum to ask for your help with the questions. I want to try and make a different interview than the usuals (how did you start with ice figure skating, what are you planning to do when you retire and so on; the basic stuff) so I can impress him and also, make it enjoyable for the both of us. It seems that it will be a 10-15 minutes interview, more or less.

So, if anyone has any questions that really want to ask him or original/different questions, could you send them to me? I have tomorrow friday and all the weekend to prepare, so if anybody wants to guide me a little in the technical stuff, I would also appreciate it. The interview will be in Spanish, but I can translate all your questions :)

I will be here all weekend, since it's the Europeans and I have to keep an eye on him, but also I will be reading this forum. So feel free to contact me, through this thread or with personal messages. Everyone will be appreciated and welcome! .x

Wow, lucky you!!! Maybe which is the jump which he feels more comfortable with? Or less comfortable and why? :)

You're so lucky! I would tell you to send him my regards but I doubt that counts
Perhaps you could ask him which has been his personal highlight of his season so far? Which competition has he felt the most satisfied with during this season?
Most male skaters go for a quad when they want to upgrade their BV, how did he come to the unconventional (and really unique) option of adding a triple-triple-triple?
What's his opinion on the progress Spanish figure skating has made over the years, arguably thanks to him?

Those are the ones I can think of atm :)

Thanks for the input, Tzazu! Yeah, I'm so grateful that his team agreed for an interview in the middle of the competitions... I'm writing down your question, thanks!

Don't worry, xibsuarz, I'm sure that I will have my moment of fangirling over him. I will make sure to send him regards and luck and congratulate and everything necessary...
I really like your second question, so I'm writing that one down in the main questions of the interview and the third one I'll try to fit it in. The other two as complementary, just in case I need more. Thank you! .x

Ooooh questions ! I'm going to try to think of a cool one. Ah, found it !

"What is the music piece he's dreaming to skate on but never had the opportunity to do yet ?" and "What is his favourite videogame?" :3 (not very technical I know XD)

Hi, melmel! Thanks for your questions! I already had one very similar to the music one written down, so I can assure you that I will ask about that one. The videogame one though, I already know it. I'm trying to do as much background check on him as possible to prepare for this interview, so I found an interview done on the 7th of January in a Spanish radio program about videogames. His top 3 videogames atm are Battlefield 1, Skyrim and Fifa 2017. I will link you the interview below, although it's in Spanish. :D

I was also thinking of asking him if he thinks that the skating jumps will evolve in more difficulty? Like a quintuple or maybe in things like backflips, like Surya Bonaly tried to do once. And whether if he would prefer more difficult jumps or that figure skating stays more or less within the limits that it has now.
[I'm sorry if I'm making any mistakes in spelling, as I said, I'm quite amateur on this world, plus I'm spanish]

Oooh thank you ! I will try to find another question then !

Maybe, what kind of characteristics is he looking for in his skating boots ? (like for exemple there's different kind of attaches for the blades, does he prefer one over the other ?)
