2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

Now, for those of you who can't tell how tiny these girls are in person, this picture gives you a good idea. Those young ladies are tiny. They look just like the dancers I danced with and hung out with in St Petersburg when I was in Russia. Delicate and Gorgeous....I don't know if they'll sweep the podium but, they sure are pretty.

Swap Gold and Silver and I can live with this. Polina or death.

Actually, i think we will need a 4 places podium to handle all the russians
Polina, well, she is the queen and should medal.
Medvedeva, with good programs, can be pretty entretaining.
Zagitova is very raw, yes, but people forget that this is her first international season. She has room to improve, but she also has the potential to be great.
Last but not least, Anna deserves to be on podium too =)

Polina is often injured, so we don't know what will happen to her. We don't know if Medvedeva and Zagitova will have a good enough season to qualify. Anna, yes, she has a chance for a good result. I count more on Yulia than Zagitova :confused2:
We shouldn't forget that every of these girls can have a meltdown at the olympics and there are other strong girls from other countries as well

Well a lot of the other ladies can have meltdowns at the Olympics as well, this is not unique to just Russian ladies. Zagitova is new to the scene, but Polina (when not injured) and Evgenia have consistently performed well in competition. Anna is also showing a consistent streak since 2016 Russian Nationals. I would be more worried about injury for the Russian ladies than meltdowns.

I want lots of ladies to go to 2018; Anna, Yulia, Liza, Polina etc., it is really sad that only 3 talented ladies will go.

o.O Yulia? She is just so down the ranks now, even when healthy.
I don't think russian fed would send her for sentimental reasons.

Also, isn't it interesting how Sotskova cracked under pressure?

I really hope Radionova stops being the prettiest girl in the room and gets her s... together. She has an actual chance to make the world team.

There has not been a new thread on Medvedeva for a while - I thought to make up for it. But then changed my mind. What I want to say is that now she keeps all point records putting the skaters of the past to the past. But she may start setting tournament results records as well.

Of course, she is very far from the records of winning major championships. But in terms of overall podiums and wins she should look quite impressive even now. Her international competitions started in 2013/14. Since then she participated in 9 junior and 12 international tournaments. She won 7 junior and 11 senior events, had 2 junior bronze and 1 senior silver. So far 100% international podiums and 86% international wins.

I think threads will pop up soon, the folks who usually start them need some time to recover from the blow.
There are some awesome quotes in the ladies FS thread though

Yes, some of the ladies on beforehand weren't bad, and then she came on and she was on another planet, it's only when you see something like that that you realise how good she is.

I don't know how many times I have watched Evgenia's FS program. And every time it is new and fresh to me. I am literally transfixed. She is from a different dimension. If she keeps growing like that she will be a legend.

P.S. When I was watching her skate on the Russian channel I tried to understand Tarasova's commentary, and she, I think, said: Zhenia "is taking us with her - and then ... we fall in love".

Congrats on Anna's silver. She has proven again and again that she is becoming a FIERCE competitor, saving those jumps with catlike grace. Her poise, sophistication, and commitment to the music were unmatched by all but Carolina and Laurine :luv17: Big gorgeous jumps and incredible speed. It's just sad that Anna Tsareva apparently doesn't have enough political pull to get Anna the scores and results she deserves.

Also people complaining how she doesn't push the sport forward. By doing 8 triples F even if its against the rules. By doing 3-3-3 combos in competition even if it is against the rules. By tanos and backloading, because of course all other skaters have too much good taste and prefer to lose but not do those ugly things. By setting up an insane standard which other folks will be compared with =)

It seems to be fairly common knowledge for fans of Russian skating that CSKA skaters have an internal advantage?

What do you mean by "common knowledge"? What is it? Can you keep elaborating with more details? Are you saying the Euro judges were from CSKA? I didn't know about it...
And what is the "internal advantage"? Internal where? Internal in Europe, or Russia? This is Euros, do you know?

I have seen many Russian posters discuss the political advantage of CSKA skaters. They would know more than I would. It frequently comes up in discussions of Anna's low PCS scores. :confused2:

Also, you might not know this, but sometimes whoever the federation prefers will score better internationally. Because the federation does not prefer Anna (as she is not from CSKA) the judges are not giving her very high scores.
