So it'll be tight.

I will be happy if he fights for it and tries the current best he can do. Win or not, can we ask for more?

It will be a good lesson even if he loses. He can't afford to mess up the SP, times have changed. Chasing in the FS is risky. He will have one more experience to build on and that's that.

Plus, he can still win. He's Yuzuru Hanyu, come on y'all

Um I think some people are undermining how GOE play a big part in CoP. Today is an example, in my opinion. Had Yuzuru skated clean, he probably would still not beat his own WR. That's because his GOE with 4S 4T3T 3A at GPF is maxed and perfect. It is also why he can still score so big despite losing 9 points in BV alone. Free skate will have 8 jumps and 3 spins plus 2 steps. The GOE game will be magnified. We have seen him gathered 25 pts from GOE alone on the FS.

Secondly, this is a sport. Just like at any other sport, you have time when you win and when you lose. If an athlete is buried and give up just because he lost 1-2 competition, then maybe that's only how far they are. Serena Williams did not win everything. So does tiger woods, etc. They are still playing.

I honestly don't understand the freaking out over one so-so SP. I'd love him to win everything but I am realistic enough to know that it will not happen. But I don't think he is over just because of a lousy SP. I don't know, the constant frustration and greed some of his fans have when he does not win is something I can't relate. He is a skater that fulfill his potential. He won oly, world, GPFs and break records. Seeing this I actually prefer him to be the underdog and not the favorite. My goodness, some skaters' fan would have already been thankful if their favorite can make it to world/oly team or is still skating. Honestly if Yuzu himself end up to be content with his result, I don't see why his fans shouldn't be too.

I want him to skate clean, but it is more than because of title and medal. Because his programs are beautiful and when he skates clean it is magical. And I need a clean HnL to save on my phone. ;)

Good heavens, it's hard to be a new Yuzuru fan. Between this thread and the Yuzu tag on tumblr, I don't know where to turn to without seeing doom and gloom all over the place. Is this how it is every single time?

Tumblr's not too bad at the moment...there's just one Yuzuru blog who's posted several negative things

I don't really want to ruffle any feathers here, but I think, Meoima, you may need to take a bit of time off being a Yuzu fan because if you're only a fan if he wins, then being his fan isn't going to be very healthy for you?

Can you not?
Especially as you're new here but you don't get to tell other people what they should and should not do, especially when it comes to being his fan.

She's obviously afraid for him and we're all anxious. Let's not add oil to the fire. We'll push through this as we pushed through everything.

Yuzuru Hanyu

The tumblr tag (and his Facebook fan page) are filled with: oh he looked so different and stiff! Is he still sick? He got the flu like 2 months ago and obviously it's a terribly life-threatening disease that made him so thin and sickly and does he look alright to everyone? OMG he looks so sad, like he's gonna cry! Ad nauseum. I actually prefer it here, but by only a small margin.

I mean it's okay to be worried (I am) but these kind of stuff seems to come from immature minds..... and fangirl/boy hearts.

There're enough to be worried right now tbh :palmf:

You're not the only one. I think this discussion is pretty interesting as well. Maybe because I'm a pretty new fan so I don't have the same level of emotional bond compared to fans that have been following him for years?

In the end, only Yuzu can control what he does. If he can find satisfaction with his free skate, then that's the best possible outcome. Winning (or even medaling) is just icing on the cake.

Teach me master, i wish i could keep this Hanyu-induced anxiety away and have your mentality

I am too a not-so-old fan but I am too very worried about Yuzu FS. I want to give everything in this world to our precious boy. And I'll admit that another reason I hate to see this is that losing to shoma and nathan seems to me a signal that it is the dawn of a new generation. I know that it is coming any time soon, but still... I love the current generation.

As much as I'm worried, I don't see how I should be emotionally influenced by any of these posts. All are meaningless predictions of a future that none can predict or influence. But it is rather interesting for me to read what you all think, optimistic or not

EDIT: forget about my post, couldn't be more well said by Lambari

Of course i will love him no matter what. My anxiety stems from the fact that i don't want to see him disappointed or upset. That's what i want him to win everything. I know he is human and can't be perfect every time, but i had high hopes considering how happy and calm he looked.

But he didn't look disappointed or upset ;)
And I didn't mean to call anyone out specifically, you don't have to defend yourself or something. I just wish we could go back to more positivity. For Yuzu's sake, and ours to.

Except that you don't know whether or not he actually made that mistake due to skating second and I will keep saying this until it's proven. I'm really not one for calling people out for how they support someone, but seriously....like seriously....come on. You don't care about WC??? Pretty sure Yuzuru cares. He won it once actually so he doesn't 'always' lose. You've made it very clear you aren't happy, I think we all got the message loud and clear. Now how about some support!
But he often messes when he skates 2nd.
As I have said, I consider 4CC to be more important than WC this season. Cause it's Olympic ice rink. It's okay if most people don't consider 4CC important.
Why I said I don't care about WC, cause he already lost it 2 times, losing it 3rd times doesn't make it worse at least to me. If he doesn't win WC but win Olympic then it still means a lot.
But I guess after this 4CC, I should lower my hope that he can win Olympic again. Maybe some skaters always mess the biggest competitions no matter how good they are.
You know this whole season I only hope he will do well 4CC and he mess. So yeah I am pretty disappointed. Maybe I want that 2nd OGM too much for him. But I should give up. It's better for my mentality. Whatever will come, will come.

Sorry, I didn't really want to mean it in a bad way. I was trying to say that sometimes taking a step back and taking a break might be better when one is feeling this kind of anxiety. I think I worded it really badly, though.

I'm going to defend Meoima here - no way is she just a fair-weather fan. She's just managed to sound more frustrated than Yuzuru for once. Kudos for overdoing him of all people. She truly loves him, but she has this unshakeable optimism she has shown for years and years now. :)

Oh darling, I have been suffering too much for him all those years. Would we come back to season 2013, then that season right after Olympic.
I am mad because he makes same mistake again. Like how many times why he can't fix it. But yes, maybe Yatagarasu is right, maybe something is not meant to be fixed. Maybe I should pray that he will always skate after his rivals.

Deep, deep breaths everyone :) The pressure building up to the SP grew to a fever pitch with the media circus, the pressure of the fans, and the expectations of everyone. Who else is lauded as the superstar and money-mover of FS in the media right now, who gets 100s of fans to wait and great him at the airport, who knows every success or failure will be picked apart? It's kind of unfortunate that underdogs are allowed to be imperfect because they're expected to be in their challenge to the leader, while leaders that falter are seen as weak and vulnerable. But we've come a long way since the skinny (well, skinnier ) asthmatic waif underdog that would collapse at the end of his programs. He's now leading this sport with his head held high, and the change in expectations for him to be perfect is a testament to the reach of his performances, and the respect that he's earned. It's the burden of expectation. No one competes now that has more emotional baggage attached to him, it amplifies every high so that it's so high, and amplifies every low. This is why all his fans seem to react differently, sometimes in negative ways (just look at this thread around Boston ), but I hope we can all understand where other posters are coming from, Meoima or anyone else, we all come from the same place of love and appreciation. Pressure is a duel sword, but it is a privilege. :) Cheering for him to take the new pressure of chasing in his FS and channel it into something positive that makes his performance all the more great.

Like Johnny said in his NHK commentary, he's never been shy from making mistakes in the spotlight. Every stumble or little setback is greeted with a retaliation, don't let it be said that Yuzuru Hanyu doesn't go down fighting. :) The 4Lo landing was the best it's been all season, and perhaps that plus the warmup made him overthink the 4S+3T. But victory and challenge is not a linear path, it takes setbacks to make "the scenery after climbing the wall" all the more sweet. The FS is a new battle and I'm excited. Go Yuzuru!

You know what, personally I think 4CC this season is more important than WC. Cause it's in the Olympic ice rink. That's why I am so stressed about 4CC. At this rate I don't think he will win 4CC. It's a tall order to skate well his LP especially when his rivals are more consistent than him at this point.
Even if by some miracle he does well the Lp then wins 4CC and wins even WC, I am still disappointed at what he did today. He has been given this same test over and over again to skate 2nd and he has failed it every time.

I don't think 4CC is more important than WC because it's the Olympic ice rink. Gracie Gold was all excited to skate at Boston Worlds because she won Nationals there and look how that turned out for her. There's also the possibility that Yuzu could be injured or ill at the time of the Olympics and miss it altogether. Luck is such an important factor when it comes to the Olympics--you can do everything right and still lose. How often have we seen that happen?

As for him failing the "having to skate 2nd" test, if you really believe that is what negatively affected his SP than you might want to direct some of your disappointment at his team. That's an issue that they should have worked on with him years ago, calling in a sports psychologist if necessary. TCC may have great technical coaches but I'm still not convinced it's the best environment for dealing with those pesky "between the ears" issues that so often determine who wins gold and who doesn't.

Thank you for this post :) - I needed some positivity after all the doom and gloom

Yes, good, listen to old Yata

We shall sacrifice a cake and vodka to skating gods that his skating order is good next time. I mean, me, sacrificing chocolate? You have to understand, that is huge. Not to mention the vodka.

Seriously though, breathe. Now, math says he has a shot at 4CC. He has a shot. Let's wait and see what happens, ok? And you can get drunk with us for it so we'll have a party.

How is 4CC more important than Worlds, I need some enlightment. It's ok if some consider it becaue, well, I can't crucify anyone because of that, but personally I think this assertion is based on some major belief in superstition and juju, not on the actual similarities with the Olympics.

Different seasons

Different competitions.

Different points in time.

Different mental states, different pressure.

... Same rink?

Or are we on some Yuri On Ice 2.0 alternative universe and 4CC is the new GPF? If we are, Yuzuru betta get his emergency last seconds 4T/S/Lz asap.

I've read someone refer to Yuzu as the awkward middle child between Javi/Patrick and "the youngsters". I think he can stick for a bit more, he is not that old compared to the actual "old generation".
But he often messes when he skates 2nd.

I have to agree with you on this. I don't really want any bad memories or feelings attached to the Olympic rink for him, given how he has said he is easily suggestionable...

That 4Lo did get 2.2+ GOE, so I call that a small victory. :)

Of course, I ain't suggesting that Yuzu is now old news. But merely pointing out that a new generation is coming with strong and young contenders. No one even knows how the new generation will be

Some kind of I hope he will have good memories at the Olympic ice rink. YuzusHydroblade is say It right. That's what I mean. Like some good memories that help his mentality when Olympic comes. But I give up now. It doesn't matter anymore.

Entire post

YES to everything in this post!!! Yuzuru has overcome so many challenges to get to where he is now and that's one of the reasons why I love him and his skating so much. I'm sure that whatever happens, he'll learn from this experience and use it to come back stronger. Cheering for him in the FS!!
