Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I read an old interview (from February 2016) with Brian Orser, a Hungarian journalist made this during EC 2016 in Bratislava. Most parts are about Yuzu and Javier training together, the communication with Yuzu, and the quad-craze. I don't think there are many new things in it, but I made a rough translation, and I hope you guys enjoy it. :)

Brian Orser: "We have to understand the system"

Q: Now, two out of the three best male skaters are your students: Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez. It seems like that they are very different characters.

BO: Yes, they are. They are very different, and because of this, I think it is easier to them. They are good teammates, they are friendly with each other on the ice and they respect each other. They don’t go together to cinema or to a party, because Yuzu is not that type, he rather stays at home to study, becase he goes to university.
Their style, their temperament are different, and I have to know both of them very well. I have to understand how they feel in certain moments. I emphasise to my students that communication is the key. If they don’t like something, then they have to tell me, and if I don’t like something, then obviously I tell them too. They have to tell me what is going on in their lives, then I don’t have to guess. I don’t have time to guess. We have to find out the problems and then try to solve them. Anyway their schedules are different, sometimes they skate together, sometimes they not.

Q: It is said that Yuzuru Hanyu barely understood English when he went to Toronto, but it only turned out later…

BO: Yes, because he was constantly nodding and saying: „Yeah yeah yeah. Yeah yeah yeah.” Since then I know that „Yeah, yeah, yeah” means: NO.

Q: Was it difficult to communicate with him?

BO: Very much. Now I can comfortably ask him: „Yuzu, are you sure that you understand what I’m saying?” Because it happens that I tell him to jump a flip, and then he jumps a loop. But he keeps nodding the whole time. Now he speaks English better, so the communication is easier, and it is also natural that I ask him that he understands everything.

Q: Did you use an interpreter?

BO: No, but the language of figure skating is universal. The technical things can be discussed easily. The situation is more difficult if it’s about strategies and plans. I want to explain to them everything, so that they will understand why we train in some way or in another on a certain day.

Q: How important is to you that your students score 100+ in the short and 200+ in the free program?

BO:: It seems like it is the biggest motive in this season. It all began with Yuzu at the NHK Trophy, and it continued in the Grand Prix Final, but there also Javi skated very well and got more than 200 points.

Q: Do Javi and Yuzu inspire each other?

BO: Extremely, and they respect each other very much. If they train together, Javi fells and Yuzu is near to him, he always stops and helps him to get up. In the beginning of the season, Javi had struggled with his free program, especially with the last 45 seconds of it, which is really killing (?). Yuzu stood there with the other skaters and coach and kept clapping and shouting: „Go Javi, go Javi!”. But it’s the same vice versa. If Yuzu fells, Javi helps him to get up. Before the start of the season, when Yuzu was practicing the three quads, he couldn’t succeed with the third one, the second quad toe. He couldn’t find the rhythm at all. Then at the end he asked Javi: „Javi, how can you jump the third quad?” Javi replied the following: „Yuzu, just shut it off your brain. Don’t think about it. Just breathe, and do it, but don’t think.” And after this Yuzu started to jump those quad toes successfully. So they work together very well. I think, it also gives them some kind of comfort: if you train together with someone with whom you go the the big event, to the Olympics, to the world championships, then it is a good feeling that there is someone with you who went through the same just like you did.

Q: Javi said in Bratislava that it’s possible that the triples will soon disappear from figure skating, or that the ISU will have a rule that only three quads will be allowed in the free skating. In your opinion, in which direction is this sport going?

BO: One day triples may be gone. In my time, people had swooned from triple axels, the media went crazy too. I jumped a 3A during training and everyone went crazy. Now it is a completely natural thing. It is incredible, how many things happenned in 25 years. So, who knows what will happen in the next 25 years

But one thing I hadn't experienced yet : the roller-coaster of emotion. I kept reading left and right that being a Yuzu fan was pretty intense but until 4CC I hadn't experienced it live - but omg last week has been both hell and heaven and now I'm emotionnally exhausted :)

Isn't it glorious? In a, is this what a heart-attack feels like, way? Repeatedly?

Welcome everyone, post long, post often.

And have a glorious Yuzuru to welcome you!

(Nobu talking extremely fast, lapsing into kansai accent in the middle. pls feel free to correct)

Ahh, thank you so much for bringing this and translating!
And he would know, wouldn't he, just what Hanyu did and how awesome it was, and could truly appreciate it. He is so cute in his enthusiasm to get that point across. I've got to love him for it. Hopefully it reached everyone. :luv17:

Omg his skin is so perfect :luv17: I don't think he had bad skin even in his teenage year (total assumption) ... i'm jealous :laugh2:
Well…I think these photos have been psed…his skin is gorgeous but above ones surely have been refined and recolored by software… the ones posted on the Japan news websites are more real

Wow you know how to make people welcome

And yes, it is glorious. But we must be masochists in a way to appreciate all that suffering and ask for more !

hahaha definitely. I do fansite photos for Korean idols, Chinese fans are meticulous about retouching skin and colour-correcting (I'm pretty lazy in comparison)

I was really surprised that there were similar fans for Yuzuru actually XD Are there fans that frequently go to as many competitions/shows as possible for photographs and fancams?

Awesome fancam because it has the elements and the respective detailed scoring for them appearing at the screen.

i don't know if someone (or myself) already posted though. i'm getting lost in these fancams, i'm in paradise.

I saw this last night and all I can say is: Judge 4 who hurt you? Seriously she gave Yuzu's YOLO triple axel a 0 in GOE while judges 5-9 gave him a 3 in execution. Judge 1 was apparently also hurt in the past and scored him in the 0-1 category along with judge 4 for most of his jumps. That's a travesty. I need to know what they gave Nathan to determine if it's a conspiracy.

Does this count? LOL I think that's in practice.

Apparently there wasn't any videos from our korean fancam overlord Aaron though. Maybe he didn't go to. :dbana:

She was very strict with Yuzu's GOE scores...:disapp:

Lol That's just unfortunate whack judging, there's no need for conspiracy theories. FS has too much of them already.

i meant to edit my other post but anyway

Judge number 4, Mexico.
Judge number 1, Australia.
(AUS, USA, CHN, MEX, NZL, CAN, TPE, KOR, JPN)

The Australian gave him the same score for skating skills as she did to Nathan, when even the US judge had the decency not to do it :palmf: (but then apparently Patrick has worse SS than Nathan so there you go).

It is actually very easy to see the 2 camps in judging, but it's funny how the Canadian switched sides away from the USA team; it's also politicking of course. At least it's good for Yuzuru.

Lol yes! But I can see why so many would want to (other than the general fandom culture over here), figure skating is fun to take photos of and real pretty when you get a good one/super amusing when you get a weird one.

I wonder if it's because once Patrick was out of the race for podium, Yuzuru was the only one left that was more similar to the kind of skating Patrick brings, at least comparatively to Nathan, hence the change of sides from the Canadian from SP to FS. The enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that.

Wait. Australian judge gave Yuzu's gorgeous FS a 9.0 in Composition? IS HE BLIND?!!!!

Edit: Mexico judge gave Nathan's step sequence a 3 in execution and Yuzu a 2. Yes because when I see Nathan's step sequence I don't think about a baby deer stumbling around learning how to stand. (might be a slight exaggeration...slight).

Double edit: I think the most egregious thing the US judge did was score Yuzu and Nathan the same in Transition. If that isn't a load of horse sh*t I don't know what is. Okay I gottta stop staring at the score sheet at 1 AM.

I thought maybe with Patrick's long dominance in Men FS and with Canada's strong tradition of Ice Dancers that they're more used to that kind of skating and reward it more.
