Yulia Lipnitskaya

I want happy healthy Yulia :) There will be probably a lot of pressure from Russian media as she is Olympic Champion and I don't think she needs any unnecessary stress.

urgh, the media :palmf: now that countdown to pyongchang has started, i already saw article with question of Yulia's comeback thrown here and there.
Eventhough i selfishly want her skate for olympic, the one matter the most is healthy Yulia, so she can skate to her own satisfaction.

According to wikipedia, there are 3 villages named "Lipnik" in Russia and 21 in Poland.

Still doesn't make Julia Polish or of a Polish ancestry. :confused2:

On the other note I don't think RusFed would ever release her to skate for any other country. She became a symbol of Sochi and figure skating in Russia.

Obviously not, but it makes it more likely. It's like surname Tuktamysheva indicating Tatar origin, Pogorilaya - Ukrainian or Tutberidze - Georgian.
I don't care that much and am obviously treating it lightly, since I know RusFed won't ever release her, still one can dream for fun right? :)

You can dream as much as you like, but please don't do it at our expense. And certainly not on Julia's.

Name Lipnicka/Lipnicki (phonetically Lipnitska/Lipnitski) is one of the most frequent last names in Poland. Same as Johnson, Morgan or Wilson in USA. The suffix -aya is added to Polish-origin feminine surnames to make them Russian.
So it's possible Yulia has some Polish ancestry. Same as Tara Lipinski. But it means probably very little now. Most people everywhere has some ancestry going outside.
Either way, Poland would be delighted to welcome Yulia. And she would have a guaranteed Olympic spot for the rest of her active career... :)

I'm not exactly sure how dreaming or deliberating someone's name origin can hurt people, but I'm sorry if they did. :rolleye:

Urmanov on Julia, "Kuban 24" TV, 27.02.2017:
https://youtu.be/1qULWoWT2uQ?t=497

Unfortunately I only know a few words in Russian although I watched the interview anyway in case I could figure anything out from the video. But...could you please just give the basics of what Urmanov said about Julia?

I put the intro text into Google Translate and got
In the traditional category "Hero of the week" program "Facts. Sports "- the Olympic champion in figure skating Alexei Urmanov.

So I'm thinking the interview was mostly about him in general not specifically Julia--but if you could tell us a little bit about what he said about her, I'd be very appreciative!

It starts with Aleksey enumerating three vehicles of Yulia's success in Sochi:
- she was likeable, little girl in great Olympic Games [contrast]
- this likeable, little girl competed home [patriotism]
- she conquered hearts of fs fans and ordinary people with SL program.

He emphasizes that Julia is already a great athlete, answering to how Olympics affected her career, he said dealing with fame is very hard, not everybody is able to cope with it very quickly and fluently proceed further, so he states a fact that OG certainly influenced her sporting career.

All of it sounds pretty gloomy tbh... :slink:

I've been saying all along that the unending series of injuries and hardware malfunctions is all a ruse to hide that her head is still reeling from the unprecedented pressure she experienced after the sochi team event, where they tried to make her into a symbol of russia and placed the entire hopes of the country on her tiny little shoulders. now, urmanov is hinting at this situation, though he isn't the first. eteri was in a panic when yulia broke down because she didn't know how to handle it. ilya said yulia will probably never be a top skater again. i'm afraid his prediction is increasingly more likely the longer yulia's team continue the path they're on. yulia needs to step away from competitions for some time and learn to let go. this way she can decide to skate for herself, instead of feeling the pressure from others. I don't think yulia's fans are helping for going along with the harmful charade, but then I don't think they can be blamed either. the one thing i've learned about fans is that they will believe anything so long as the person they idolize endorses it. fans are like mobs 'fanatically' centered around a leader. unfortunately for yulia, urmanov is probably too selfish to suggest she step back. i'd be surprised if anyone in her team is talking sense to her, and poor little yulia has too much of a fire in her to step back. i have to imagine she is a confused & conflicted young woman at this point. of course this is all my interpretation. maybe i'm wrong and things really are mostly hunky-dory aside from those unlucky injuries.

but really, i wish she never did the team event and only skated the individual competition. she'd probably be retired now and living quite happily doing modeling/reality shows and the like.

She can still do it. She is unbelievably gorgeous and she can be very successful in the acting/modeling business in Russia, or even beyond. I'd rather see her happy on her new career path rather than constantly struggling and forcing herself into competitive figure skating.
She can do skating shows, films, she can be an actress or a face for commercials. She is very marketable.

Should she wish and choose to put work and effort into, Yulia can become a great many things. Tbh...modelling, reality television and acting is pretty low on that list...and an absolute waste of that brilliant mind, drive, wit and personality of hers. Why not an author/writer, an artist/illustrator, a boss/business woman, an activist/leader?.....hell...why not make her Minister of Sport #sorrynotsorry

In any case, I hope Yulia is safe and on her way to a healthy state of body and mind right now. Baby girl, come back when you're ready, and on your own terms <3

Oww... goodness, I hope she'll still return. :sad21:

It is sad indeed, but even if she never returns then the memory of that one year created such a deep impact on us, that many skaters wish their entire careers were only a bit like that.

The entire world's expectations were too much for that little girl in red and the little girl in red was broken.

Yes, we all wish for her rebirth, but I rather see her happy in a new post-competitive life, than experiencing such a pressure again.
And even if she does come back - it won't be the same girl in red anyway. It will be a new person - a completely different and new woman.
So from this perspective - I'd rather see her happy in whatever she does.
