CaroLiza_fan I'm sorry I don't really keep up with those sports, but I am aware of some skiing events that happen here. Some of Calgary's facilities are in use for training these days, like the Oval. There was a fatal accident just last year on the bobsled track. Canada I think focuses on speed skating and hockey events, with annual events in some other sports (like figure skating and tennis).

Ontario hasn't hosted the Olympics. BC, Alberta, and Quebec have. Toronto did host the 2015 Pan Am Games though. Ricoh Coliseum is the only rink in Toronto that would meet Skate Canada's rink size requirements. But I am not sure it would satisfy other criteria.

Of the arenas that are in existence, the following approximately meet the size requirements SC wants (figures from Wikipedia for hockey seating capacity):

Scotiabank Centre - Halifax, NS (10,595)
TD Place Arena - Ottawa, ON (9,862)
Budweiser Gardens - London, ON (9,100)
Ricoh Coliseum - Toronto, ON (7,851)
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird - Vancouver, BC (7,500)
Kitchener Memorial Auditorium - Kitchener, ON (7,268)
Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre - Victoria, BC (7,006)
Abbotsford Centre - Abbotsford, BC (7,000)

So we've got 4 options in Ontario, 3 in British Columbia, and 1 in Halifax. Additionally as mentioned by 4everchan a new rink named the Place Bell will be opening in Laval, QC later this year with a seating capacity of 10,000. If Laval has put in a bid I think they would most likely have the highest chance of winning because of the proximity to Montreal and the fact that it's a new rink.

Oh, I am sorry to hear about that accident. I don't follow bobsleding, luge or skeleton (WAAAYYYY too scary for me!), so I didn't hear about it.

But, although the facilities may not be used for international competitions, it is good to hear that they are still being used. It really saddens me when you hear about Olympic venues falling into disuse and disrepair.

A lot of attention has been brought to the facilities from the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics falling into disrepair qithin a few years (well, to be fair, the country is broke!) and the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics (due to a war).

But a few weeks ago, I saw a story that the Rio Olympics facilities are already heading the same way, barely 6 months after the Summer Games finished. And, as a motorsport fan, that makes me even more angry that the Autódromo de Jacarepaguá was destroyed to make way for the Barra Olympic Park. (Instead of having some things at the circuit and some things at Deodoro, could everything not have been held at Deodoro?!)

I actually wrote the last part of that comment out last night when I was half asleep just before going to bed, and then the internet died on me before I got posting it. So when I came back to it this morning, I added in the bit about the Nordic skiing, and never even looked at the skating part.

I'll fix it now.

By the way, I was just talking about the Winter Olympics. So, that was why I didn't include the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal (QC) in my count.

Since the Winter Olympics are the version I follow, I have a really bad habit of just calling them "the Olympics". It is the Summer Olympics that I always specify the season for. So, the exact opposite of what most people do!

So has Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, London, ON, and Ottawa for that matter, but these (including Halifax) are some of the best sports/events cities in Canada. I would not take them out of the game necessarily

let's compromise Quebec city it's gorgeous and deserves world events.

The bobsled accident/deaths were teens who snuck into the track with their own toboggans in the middle of the night. They hit the gate that separates the luge and bobsled tracks. So perhaps a problem of inadequate security, but not related to any sporting event.

Yes, that was the case. Which is why I linked the article. The point was to illustrate the facilities are still in use.

Canada does have an abundance of ice rinks.

Japan is hosting 2019 Worlds so it's unlikely they'll also host 2020 Worlds but maybe they can host 2020 Four Continents. 2021 Four Continents should be in Beijing.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend a big championship in the Netherlands, but... just came across this news item on the upcoming world championship short track in Rotterdam in the Ahoy. It has a one-minute video of creating the skating rink!
I know the place mostly from the Spanish Riding School which visits there every five or so years, but I guess it works well for a figure skating sized ice floor, too!
