I thought of the same since i am applying for post-grad. did some research and some of the programmes were very interesting + the school's reputation is great. But living in Japan without speaking Japanese would be really hard for me. And i will need at least 2 years to get proper Japanese so I just gave up on the idea.

Me too actually. I barely can understand Japanese. I got into Japan culture since middle school thanks to L'Arc en Ciel, but gave up to learn Japanese to focus on my study and English. But my newfound love for Yuzu urges me to learn it again.

Anyone has any recommendation on how to effectively learn Japanese by myself?

After painstakingly creating folders and loosely classifying the pics into them, i present to you...
My private Yuzuru Collection
Bear in mind, they are very loosely classified, and i might have misplaced some of them (once you open each folder you will know why. There are soo many pics!)
Obligatory: None of these are mine, except the ones that actually say screenshot and that is because they're literal screenshots from videos haha. Of course i am not trying to take credit for any of the pics (in fact there are three wallpapers there and i think someone here made them... I downloaded them to use them myself so it isn't bc i tried to take your credit!), i only save the ones i like the most and now i'm sharing them with you guys keep checking the folder since that's where i save my pics, it will probably be updated daily

Music helps a lot to build your vocabulary, and watching japanese tv too. The best advice i can give you is try to read in hiragana as much as you can! I follow a lot of japanese accounts and i use Anki to study kanji i've been studying on my own for 16 years and while i was placed in second level at the japanese school in my city, tomorrow i will take another test and i might be transferred to level three or four I am able to hold a conversation with the teachers, so it is entirely possible to get there on your own

The most effective way for me was learning grammar from websites, and vocab through anime. I started with kids anime, since it uses simple vocab only, and my method consists on watching the episode once with subtitles and then rewatch right away without them. That way you figure out words by context. That's the most important part. Language learners often try to memorize vocab words, but that's never effective because it doesn't teach them how to use it. This also leads to awkwardly-constructed sentences. In order for this method to work you have to have a decent amount of basic grammar down, though. Once you are able to understand kids' shows (for example, Pokemon), you can move on to more advanced anime, and eventually regular Japanese tv. It also helps to try to repeat phrases you hear as you're watching.

For writing, it's a lot of just writing over and over again. I must've filled entire notebooks learning my first 100 kanji or so. After a while it gets easier, so just writing it down a few times is enough to remember it. I suggest songs for practicing reading speed. This also teaches vocab. Once again, I used kids' shows. The reason for this is that they often include the lyrics with furigana, so my reading speed increased a lot.

For basic grammar, the textbook we used at school was Genki, which is one of the most common ones. It wasn't particularly helpful for me because I went into Japanese 1 already having studied a lot of it on my own, but it seems like a good intro.

I will warn that it's a challenge, though, if Japanese is sufficiently different from your native language you're not very likely to make progress unless you practice with people. If you want, though, I'd be glad to help! I'm always up for Japanese practice.

Also, watch Yuri on Ice for FS vocab. I may not have the level to talk about, say, politics, in Japanese, but I sure can say "he fell, but got enough rotations" hahaha.

Don't give up. 16 years might sound impressive but i wasn't constant at all, which is why my probable level is level three, which equals a year and a half of study. Watching japanese tv will help you learn a lot of the commonly used phrases, especially if you can find subbed content. Listen to the songs and read the translations, find common words and you will start to understand! My reading level is about fourth grade, so really, don't give up. It is possible to get to a good level. I decided to sign up for lessons because, also motivated by Yuzu, i've been talking to a lot of japanese on twitter, and they will never tell me i'm having mistakes, but i want to properly talk to them in their own language, and also because i want to REALLY understand our baby swan I get the big picture but he sounds so articulate that i just want to know exactly what he's saying (And i find the language extremely beautiful too!) I felt like i wasn't making much progress anymore, so i decided i needed someone to guide me

I'm travelling too far and spending too much money to put all my hopes on something like that. The ice is slippery. Yeah, I'll cheer on our boy and if he wins with clean skates I'll be ecstatic but I don't think it's in my best interest to get my hopes up. I feel bad enough that I want so badly to see Let's Go Crazy clean. I'm just going to hope to see some good practices and take in the whole championships to pad any potential disappointment in that area. Most of all I just want him to do well so HE'LL be happy. But I'm kind of conflicted because incumbent men's world champs don't win the Olympics (save for Evan but he was a weird situation anyway). So I don't want him jinxed .

I have heard many times that reigning world champions almost never win Olympics, but I haven't researched it, is it true?
In that sense I don't know if it will be good or bad thing to win Worlds this year...

私もソチオリンピックの時から羽生選手のファンになったけど。。。その時もちょっと難しい時でしたから、この気持ちに抑えった。小さいころからでスケートのファンでしたけど「スケートやりたい！」と言ったとテレビを見た時にちょっと苦しかった。羽生選手のおかげでもう一度スケートは楽しい事になった。
やっぱり私も練習したいけどここはいい場所かなあ。。。ＰＭいい？他人のことをこうりょ考慮して、英語で話しましょう（笑）

Finding rules will make learning Kanji easier. Most Kanji are aggregation of other Kanji. For example upper part of 草 (means plant, herb, grass) + 楽 (means easy, happy, fun) makes 薬 (medicine). 人 (human) + 動 (move) makes 働 (work). Starting from basic Kanji will help learning more complicated ones a lot because your knowledge about basic Kanji enables you to guess. When I find a new word in English I do the same, looking for something which is familiar to me and guess what it means first and check a dictionary.
But even for me learning new Kanji is not easy. So I understand how you feel when you find unfamiliar Kanji. I admire Chinese people for memorizing so many Kanji…
