2017 Worlds Helsinki Info and Chat

I assume it's not 10,000 all at once?!

Well, I think it's generally a good thing, inspire new generations.
As long as they're not near my seat hahah ;-D

They often have groups of kids at Finlandia practices, and they're generally well behaved.

^ Didn't you read the fine print on your ticket? You get a complimentary school-kid-leg-warmer to sit on your lap during practices :p

Oh no. Just noticed that the leader of the competition is maybe the most hated lady (politician) at the moment in Finland. Sorry, politics does not belong here, but she may got some boos there, so do not surprised if that happens. No more politics, just noticed it.

Great! I will be with my two friends, an Irish lady and an American gentleman. I'm open to suggestions as to where to eat, I have a particular love for sushi and Japanese food, but anywhere and everything is great. We're all staying in different locations, myself and my Irish friend are staying at locations nearer the arena and I think himself is staying in the city. I'd love to have had a bit more knowledge of the city to be able to organise more but I'm a scatterbrain at the best of times and would be lost with absolutely no prior knowledge of the location! Maybe after a bit of exploring on the Sunday, we'll be better positioned to see what might work best for later in the week...

My friend told me that this is good http://www.konnichiwa.fi/ ( I haven't been there myself). I could come, too, if you want to. There are some Italian style places, La Famiglia near Stockmann and Bravuria in Kamppi.. Or if you absolutely want to have something Finnish, I know a couple of places. Those 3 I mentioned are in the center.

As the American gentleman (term used very loosely) I'm up for about anything... except sushi.(sorry lyverbird1 !).

I think we need some ideas of numbers as other members have said they would like to join, and then maybe we should book 2 tables, or something, at La Famiglia. I'm hoping it isn't an absolutely hot restaurant since are numbers may not be set in stone. Which evening should we try for - the 26th or the 27th? And can everyone who wants to join indicate so here.

During Ice hockey worlds at the same place 2012 they had had tents outside where were sold beer, sausage etc. (and prices had been "astronomical", as we express in Finnish). I wonder if they are having now for us "typical fans of figure skating" some coffee and "muurinpohjalettu" tents or something like that instead on outside area? Those they have often in events. Muurinpohjalettu=thin pancake which is fried on a flat pan outside.

One person coming. Maybe Sunday is better for me but Monday is ok, too. What time would it be, is 18.00 too early?

La Famiglia: https://www.raflaamo.fi/en/helsinki/la-famiglia-helsinki
Open Sun 12-22, Mon 11-23.

Sunday sounds good! I should be able to come, but I'm not sure about times yet - we have a volunteers' oritentation thing at Hartwall in the afternoon, so anytime after that. Only I don't know what time it is yet, just that it's in the afternoon.

We had lunch at La Famiglia on May Day last year (a super uber busy day for restaurants in Finland) and got a table easy, there weren't many people there at all (which now I think of it doesn't sound great lol). The waiters were delightfully Italian, one of them sat with us for ages after the meal and talked about how popular Rupert Everertt is in Italy...we weren't even talking about him, the waiter brought him up himself

Maybe the Monday night would be better for a bigger get together as more people might be arriving on the Monday itself. What kind of number do you reckon? 10? Maybe 15? I reckon restaurants might be ok for uncertain reservations more on a Monday night as well. We certainly have five and would be likely to double that figure, I'd say...

As an edit, I could suggest that if people are around anyway on the Sunday night, we could perhaps do both if that's not too ambitious...

Just read the couple of posts that seem to prefer Sunday night, I'm perfectly fine with that! Could we say a little later than 6pm in case there's any delays with flights or booking into accommodation etc. 7 or 8pm?

Monday is ok for me, maybe a bit earlier ( the place isn't open that late on Sunday, or Monday).

Remember to check the local time in Helsinki, as the 'summer time' will start on 26th. If you come here on Saturday.

New posts from Merjan and TMC suggest Monday, plus Nobutin only comes in on Monday. I've asked the super helpful hotel I'm staying at to think of a good restaurant (possibly Finnish?) that's budget-friendly and open on a Monday night. I'm going to make a reservation for 8.00. I hope that's OK with most people. I think the group at the moment is myself +1, lyverbird +2, TMC +1, Merjan, Nobutin. Sorry about incorrect spelling of names. So around 10 at the moment. Anyone else?

Also Waxel? And TTFinn? So around 11 people. I'll make the booking 7.30 - hopefully that's OK for most of you.

Coloured Time and practice schedule was updated.

I see the first practice sessions on several days will start a little later
eg. First Monday practice (Ladies) is now at 06:45 instead of 06:15...

I have made reservations at Salve (Finnish, central, budget-friendly, by Finnish standards, liked by locals and with plenty of choice on the menu) for Monday at 7.30. If anyone can't make it, or any other members want to join us, please indicate here. I'm looking forward to meeting you!
