I actually cried last night watching Marin's Romeo and Juliet FS. The cut they used from the Craig Armstrong R&J was the same as the cut from Yuzu's R&J 1.0, the soft mood change/breathing break part of the program that I loved, and gosh it just reminded me of him so much I started crying. Sort of felt like a different Yuzuru back then, a younger and more carefree one.

And I kept just seeing young Yuzuru's choreography. Not me alone, it seems.
That LP is a legend...

Well, in ten days time, the craziness will began! I can't wait to see news clips and pics with him, the fever of practice before competition ...
hope we all survive those days! I already feel nervous. :hap85:

If someone used kissing you of course the first thing I (and so many people) think about would be Yuzuru. There are many RNJ program even way before, like the nino rota version or the tchaikovsky version. But the craig armstrong version is just so well-known as Yuzuru's.

He made that song his! As he did PW, Chopin or Seimei, I guess. :)

Yeah, somehow I can still kind of let it pass if someone skated to craig armstrong RnJ (or maybe even Chopin) because it has that warhorse-y feeling in a sense. But people who skate to PW and Seimei, I'm just... why?

Not for Yuzuru's sake but more for their sake. That program is just so well-associated and identified with Yuzuru and it is just a given that yours would be compared. Like why would you want to go through that? For example, I don't see many people skating to Yagudin's winter and actually be remembered about it. There are tons of other music that is less iconic to only one skater :slink:

ETA : Pretty sure LGC, Asian dream song and view of silence would be in that list too

well, what baffles me is this: do these skaters really hope they can outdo the original? :) Why not try and look for something less trademark?

Oh, I'd love someone to try and skate LGC - just for the fun of comparison. H&L is likely to stay a Yuzu only program, I think. :)

I just watched the new Spirit of the Athlete with Yuzu. There is a subbed version here by Yuzu Fairy and you can find the other parts on her account.

Did anyone else find Brian a bit naive here? In part 4, he said Yuzu shouldn't spend too much time looking back at the younger skaters who do all different kinds of quads to chase him but move forward with the bigger picture in mind. I don't think that's very smart especially because of how judges are currently scoring PCS and GOE.).

Thank you for the links. Brian is full of himself and Yuzuru has a better and clear picture of the landscape to the Olympics.

Who is the white haired Japanese accompanying Yuzuru at all the competitions, you must know? It seems usfs also put a young and tall guy to go with Nathan to competitions. Are they body guards?

I wouldn't make any judgements based on that documentary. The footage for it was mostly filmed at the beginning of the season, so what Brian thinks now might have changed quite a lot.

Hello hello hello!
One more week of relative calm and peace in the thread :D! After that... Good knows what's going to happen but I'm here to enjoy the ride this time. I refuse to let the gloominess consume me 😁

It will be interesting to see how Brian and Yuzu respond to judges handing out PCS and GOE like candy for quads. Will he simplify his program to add more quads or prioritise choreography? Those transitions and difficult entries and exits that Yuzu adds to his programs significantly drop the success rate of his quads. With PCS and GOE being scored the way it is, why bother adding such sophistication to your programs if they drop your success rate and what is being awarded most is landing jumps, especially if you can execute the jumps more beautifully than your competitors (no telegraphing, with speed and flow in and out, good air position, etc)? His 3As though are easy, easy candy. I think someone did analysis of the success rate of his 3A in competition and it was over 90% with posititive GOE and with difficult entries and exits.

I've gotta say, as a long-time tennis fan, tennis matches have nothing on figure skating. A figure skating program is comparable to a tennis match where every point is break point, lol.

It will be interesting to see how everyone handles the PCS candy being given out. My guess is that Yuzu will continue to do what he does because he wants to do it that way. He likes the challenge of doing jumps with TR in and out. He's come so far, so I doubt he'll go back to the easier route.

And yes, Brian made those comments before the new world of marking we see now. Not everyone has a crystal ball and could know that more quads may equal more GOE and more PCS.

Well, that depends hugely what their ultimate goals are - if he's just out to outjump these young guys, OK, he could try and get some more quads, but if he still decides to chase that elusive perfect skate Yuzuru Hanyu is capable of, he's not likely to water down much and is more likely still to push the boundaries of his own abilities while trying to weave quads into the choreography. I somehow suspect he'll still go for his ideas about skating...
What cracks me down everywhere is that no matter he lost two last Worlds, he's the man to beat - and try and emulate. Has there been a competition thread anywhere without any mention of Hanyu?

The boy has pride and his own vision for skating, which he has been trying to achieve for all these years, I don't think he'll go back much on that path or even at all. He may want to go clean and also to win, but I'm not sure he'll feel happy if he wins by toning himself down. Hell, when has he ever back down from doing something because it's too difficult :drama:

Yep. Season 2014-2015 when he simplified his programs... but considering any other skater would have withdrawn from those competitions, he was still tackling thing which were way too difficult for him... and for any other skater.

Yeah you're right. That entire season was just awful, I don't think he had time to practice properly for long at all. Now that he's relatively healthy (and have learnt to keep himself that way hopefully), he'll keep trying to tackle all the things. God only knows what next season's programs will look like.

What I really like about Yuzu is his attitude. While he has this very idealistic idea of figure skating and holds himself up to these high standards (to a fault) he doesn't display any arrogance. He has infinite respect for the other skaters even if those deviate from his skating ideals and, on the contrary, they become fuel and motivation for him to improve even more. I believe that he will keep on incorporating his quads into his programs without compromising the flow, regardless of the current trend in figure skating.

And trends are what they are- trends. They will pass with time. In the long run what will stand out are his programs.
