Anyone noticed how he panicked for a bit when he saw that Pooh want in the boards? He couldn't even tell Brian, he was just hitting the boards with his hand and pointing to Pooh until Brian put it back...

I noticed that right away. It was like he could not have his proper send off if he wasn't there... and then he gave his nose a squeeze. If anyone ever doubted Pooh's importance, it was put to rest there.

Yeah I saw the 4S3T during warm-up too. it wasn't on my side of the rink but it looked good from afar

It was right in front of me. I recorded the 6 minute warm-up. It was so nice. So nice. I'll post the video from my perspective tomorrow (too sleep deprived right now). I'm really glad he didn't give away the performance after the mistake (which of course was also right in front of me). That was my biggest concern. He was still ever the crowd pleaser and his facial expressions were wonderful. Sad about the score because I know what it could have been, but I know he'll be working to deliver the best long he can deliver. On the plus side, I got through it without alcohol...

I don't understand the need to find excuses and resort to blaming fed backing etc. to his scores. He made the mistakes and got those scores because of them. I don't think he said he doubted his abilities because he didn't get a good score from the judges but rather because he messed up the combo and couldn't give a no-miss performance even though his condition was good. He also didn't realize then that the deduction was from the late start.

Let's not trivialize his abilities by tying his scoring potential so tightly to the judges and his supposed fed backing that is going to Shoma now. He does not need to be gifted to score high, he just has to perform.

Sure, there is no wrong judging happening ever and how could there ever be politics in a sport that is basically controlled by national Federations :rolleye:
Yes, he made the mistake himself and others did not, which is why the placements are not too far off IMO. But that combo call was debateable at best. How often please do we see skaters in that situation not getting the combo? There are a lot of examples of skaters having turn outs, hand downs or whatever and it still counts. Can you name another example like Yuzus? Because I can't.
If you personally think the judging was great, congrats. But people questioning a rule bring applied wrong (or at least extremly unusually harsh) are not necessarily just 'finding excuses'.
But hey, maybe you can tell me then how the GOE between Yuzu & Javier or the PCS of Nathan compared to Yuzus make sense. Because no other fans nor skating experts could so far

As for JSF favoring: Yamada. Yuzu was never from a place with a lot of political backing... and if someone wants to say stuff like this doesn't exist, I kindly ask you to tell that to the half a dozen of professional, world level (ex-)athletes I know, who would like to disagree.

Charlie is 175 cm... either Yuzu is wearing his skates, or he has grown like we all think he did.

He seemed much more relaxed in that interview... when he is relaxed, his english is much better too. I think it helps when he knows the interviewer and likes them.

I don't see anything wrong with his combo not being counted. He obviously puts his free leg down before he tacks on the 2T. That ends the combo right there. It happened to him in Sochi with the 3 jump combo and it happened here.

He's doubting his abilities? Oh my god.

B.Esp wasn't so negative. But they did change from "finest skater ever" to "finest skater of the last few years"

I don't want to hear what they have to say about the others, though.

Commentators are so fickle and have such short memories.

You can have my first-born if I ever get one which debatable but you know, it's the thought that counts.

Just to add one thing, it's all well and good to say he just needs to perform, he does not need to be gifted. And that's true, in some ideal world. But his "just needs to perform" is going against those who are gifted.

Fighting windmills has never been fun. And has rarely brought much happiness to people.

You sound as if you want him to quit...

Judged accurately by rules. For SP more tough rules - has transferred weight to other leg, combo on it comes to an end. If hasn't made combo on a jump - automatically receive-4 GOE.

Found an article in Mainichi in which he talked about the effort he made for his 4S after 4CC. I thought its worth sharing so I translated, but I’m not sure my translation would convey what was written in Japanese. This article made me imagine how sad he was after the SP. Wish his effort will be rewarded in FS.

Here's my rough translation.
*Blue part is note by me, and purple part is where I’m a little bit unsure due to my lack of technical knowledge.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hanyu was focusing on one thing, to skate clean without making mistake on jumps, but he failed. “I’m very regretful” he said as if controlling his emotion.

What prevented him from achieving that was the combination jump starts with 4S. He seemed to have jumped nicely but the landing became shaky and he touched down on his left knee. After a pause he combined a 2T, but it wasn’t taken as a combination jump and he received a huge point deduction. “A mistake is a mistake.” He said. “I didn’t expect to land that way, but when I saw the replay I noticed that the axis of the jump tilted backward.”

At 4CC held in February he missed 4S both in short and long. At that time the curve going into the jump was more straight and the axis tilted forward. After the competition he received advises from a coach (or coaches?) and a former Olympian (or Olympians?) known as good jump coaches and worked on fixing the entrance, to draw a shallow curve with his left foot to be able to put his weight on the curve. As a reward, he could fully rotate the jump (in SP), but could not adjust the curve (to land properly.) “I wonder why I can’t make use of my experience. I’m very disappointed with myself.”

He received another point deduction for violating 30 seconds rule and became more than 10 points behind the leader. “The mistake on Salchow was costly. Basically you can’t make mistake in SP,” he said, but he can still make up for the mistake. “I want gold medal so I’m going to fix it.” In free program he will bet everything on the quad-Salchow which he will attempt twice.

And were is that rule written? Because I remember quite a few examples were that wasn't a reason to 'end' the combo.

He/she will become a skater and join TCC. Just saying

(And of course, yes for the rest)

If the contest was about whether the combo should be counted, here are the rules: http://static.isu.org/media/1001/tphb-singles-2016-2017.pdf

In a jump combination the landing foot of a jump is the take off foot of the next jump. One full revolution on the ice between the jumps (free foot can touch the ice, but no weight transfer) keeps the element in the frame of the definition of a jump combination.

He had his weight transferred before the 2T, so it was not counted. Nothing to do with other biases.

Sure, there are always hints of politicking and judges are humans, but to give them such a big role when there is a much more obvious explanation is just bordering on finding excuses. It would make more sense to do that if he was completely clean and doesn't score the highest.

We made it back to the apartment and had a little midnight snack so we won't die from hunger. We're probably still going to die from sleep deprivation. Or heart attacks. Or both. TBD. (I'm sooo looking forward to skipping practices tomorrow morning you have no idea)

Haven't read through the thread so no idea how doomy gloomy or whatever else -oomy you guys are around here  I'm doing something for my mental health and try to prepare myself emotionally for whatever happens. So, positive thinking: at least I get to see him skate two more times (because let's be real, no matter the placement, the person who decides not to put him in the gala would literally get murdered by an angry mob). I obviously have my preferences for the outcome, but no matter what happens, I'm sure he's going to deliver a beautiful FS. Because, completely ignoring the combo from hell, the rest of the short was fan-tastic, period. He skated the heck out of that thing. People were going nuts, and rightly so. And did anybody already mention how much he glitters? Because dear me that costume is a thing of beauty and that vest glitters so friggin much they could just turn off all the lights and let him and his shiny shiny glittery vest light up the whole arena. I'm not even going to mention the pants because... well, what can I say  and a picture says more than a thousand words anyway, so I will just enjoy the thousands of pictures that I'm sure I will find somewhere next week.

sleep now before I fall off the couch :bed:
