Oh wow that just....sad lmao...why are the Gold and Silver medalists eating while kneeling on the floor in the clean-up corner???? :laugh2:

Probably hiding. Didnt yuzu say he was hiding last year when zijun found him in her video? And in earlier pictures you could see the suit cuff of the person eating with him... I wondered if it was misha or shoma.

Hope he enjoys his time in japan this spring.

Do you have a link for that video? I didn't see it :eeking:

I hope Yuzuru is named the captain of Team Japan for the first time at WTT. He is after all already de facto leader of Team Japan methinks. And as I posted before, I want to see improvements in his cheerleading from last WTT. TJ after all has a great tradition of cheerleading from the days of Daisuke, Akiko, etc.

Judging by Yuzuru's comments to Patrick at Worlds, I think Yuzuru will not want Shoma to do better than him and in front of their home crowd, so WTT may not be an entirely fluff event for him.

And a big, big thank you to all those who shared (and will be sharing) their pictures, videos, and first-hand accounts of Yuzuru at Worlds 2017. Finally, he showed his best at Worlds. What a magical moment, and may he continue to give us many, many more!

Well team captain is usually in order of seniority for Japan, so Yuzu could be the captain but also Chris Reed. But seeing that Reed can't really speak Japanese and is part of ID which is not that popular in Japan, Yuzu will probably be captain (same at the Olympics too unless Mao or Taka goes.)

I'm not one for superstition but I'm reminded of the Japanese ladies wrestling team. Its apparently a jinx to be the captain of the team during the olympics. Everyone on the team usually medals (gold) except for the team captain...

I wonder: do other countries make their medalist wear their medals everywhere for post-competition press conferences/media blitz? I don't actually follow sports that deeply to actually know if this is common everywhere or if it's just a Japanese thing.

It might be because he's traumatised by his experience at the Emperor's Garden Party when he forgot his Olympic gold medal. He was so kuyashii about not being able to show his medal to the Emperor and Empress when Kasai brought his silver and bronze and they were so excited to see the medals  So now he just brings it everywhere.

The Eurosport FS recap was the same as the live commentary.

Eurosport Gala (recap)
(during the recap of Boyang’s ex program) Hanyu, of course, the absolute favorite (for the Olympic title), but even Hanyu is still human, although in the FS at these Worlds he didn’t really show that there’s anything human about him. ;-)

And then his story, Yuzuru Hanyu, also reigning Olympic champion, but he doesn’t always have the best pre-season, and also in the SP he made a mistake in the combination jump, so he had to come from far, the fifth place, managed to climb to the top and grab the title.
The Olympic champion of Sochi, Yuzuru Hanyu, he lost his [Worlds] title two years to Javi Fernandez, but with a free skate which I think was the best men’s free skate I’ve ever seen, he went from fifth to first in this competition, with four quads, completely skated a parcour without any mistakes, and there was just nothing that was wrong in there. Seven judges would give him 10s, and in this competition, I wholeheartedly agree with that. A clear victory, well, with only two points there was Shoma Uno with the silver. And we get to enjoy the replay of this fantastic Yuzuru Hanyu.

------

And... I think that's it for the Hanyu commentaries. I already promised to do the same for the Shoma ones, so expect to see some show up there, too, at some point, though right now I really need a BREAK! :dbana:

I would be scared to if a crowd of 500 people is waiting at an airport, screaming with cameras and what not. Man
Also the way he holds his medal at the beginning like " Don't take it away from me ":biggrin:

You're so right! I can't even imagine what it feels like and it's everyday routine for him :cool14:

LOTS of commentaries

Thank you so so so much, it is so great to read different commentaries :hap93:

Perhaps I should make an effort as well and translate the Swedish ones... Only one broadcaster (as far as I'm aware), but the videos are nowhere online (I can access them to translate, but they are geo-blocked)...Can't do it the next couple of days though, I have way too much work but I will eventually

You're welcome. I enjoy making them mainly because I feel like I can waste a few hours watching videos because I have a somewhat decent purpose for doing so. ;-)

"Hanyu continues to cement his GOAT status." Jackie Wong's take on Yuzuru's Worlds 2017 FS: It definitely elevates his status and allows him to continue to make the case for himself as the greatest. In an era when the difficulty level of men's skating is at an unbelievably high level, if he can sustain this through the next season and win his second Olympic gold, we can give him the GOAT medal. http://www.rockerskating.com/news/2017/4/2/opining-on-2017-worlds-part-2-hanyu-the-goat-returns

Of course some believe he already is (Simon Reed, Kurt Browning -- gentlemen who have seen a lot of figure skating -- have openly said so). For me, I'll be most happy if Yuzuru continues on making his case. :)

Yes, I agree that a second OGM with the kind of record that Yuzuru has deserves automatic GOAT status, but should it be necessary? He has as of today:
1. Won an OGM, with a WR in the short program
2. Broke the WRs 11 times (most of them he's own) and more importantly he did so with extremely high quality skates, the scoring changes all the time (with bonuses, more quads that are sometimes only rotated, some questionable PCS-scoring depending on who you ask) but seeing the protocol for the Chopin sp at GPF15 you understand already that it is an out-of-this-world skate. He and Patrick are also the only ones to break the 100-barrier with one quad. It shouldn't be a surprise that it is the skaters with the greatest PCS-abilities, skating skills and so on who are the only ones to do this.*
3. Two gold World Medals (one with a WR), two silvers and one bronze, the last one he got in quite a competitive(or was it?) field at the age of 17, with a skate that touched so many people and is apparently still sometimes mentioned by commentators when someone else skates to the music
4. 4-time National champion in a field that was really competitive in the beginning, still is now that Uno has improved
5. He has pushed the sport, refusing to stand still. He has also been humble enough and great enough to improve across the board, he has basically always had great skating skills but when he debuted his Chopin 1.0 he displayed remarkable ability.
6. OGM is one event at one time, and I think looking at Yuzuru's competitive record and how consistently he is in the top tells a story of how great he is http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs_cr_00010967.htm. Similiar to the case of Yuna, she's not a skater I've followed particularly closely but the fact that she never ended up off the podium is remarkable and evident of her great skill. Not saying that a great skater can't have an up-and-down record especially in the beginning, just that when one reaches their peak (or seems to) it can be evident of if one is perhaps the greatest of all time (GOAT)
7. Also sometimes I think there is a difference between being the greatest skater and greatest athlete. The greatest skater will at the top of their ability with some consistency showcase the very best skating, while the greatest athlete will be the best at performing under pressure and peaking at the right time (of course also with great skill). Both include some luck. Of course many think that one needs to be both to be GOAT.
EDIT + 8. If he wins 4CC at some point, he will be the only man to win all of the active big competitions

OGM is about luck to some extent, sometimes also at big championships the judges seem (to me at least) to equal the top competitors a bit. I have no data about this or anything though, it is just my opinion so don't take it too seriously ;)

*2. Everyone doing multiple quads are really impressive especially right now, don't misunderstand me, but the sport will continue to evolve and now that quads are able to be analyzed and taught better we will se a lot more of them (IMO). Also I hope that the tech part of PCS-skills will evolve as well. Happy that Jason Brown got great score heard that it was a good skate PCS-wise? (I haven't seen it yet). My hopes is that the PCS-requirements won't be forgotten cause there is nothing greater than an all-round tech-difficult skate (again in my opinion). I don't blame any skater for focusing on quads, but the judges should be a bit harsher across the board.

Japan times
Majestic Hanyu rises to occasion with a command performance

"I dare say that anybody who watched Hanyu’s free skate that was not moved had better be checked for a pulse."
This.
At the FS I was sitting next to an elegant&reserved Japanese lady, also a Yuzuru's fan. But during Yuzuru's brilliant performance she went just as wild as me, screaming and jumping, hugging me and holding my hands. Only several hours later I realized that we both were so thrilled that I talked to her in Russian and she answered me in Japanese! Still we had some chatting after Yuzuru's FS, talked about 4S3T, Shoma's jumps and Javier as Yuzuru's main rival - and we totally understood each other!
That's Yuzuru who's connecting people heart to heart :love:

This sounds like such a beautiful experience! I'm so jealous, since I spent livestreaming the FS alone with me screaming and crying like a lunatic
