Judging with its context, I think Charlie meant that Stephane successfully performed the program with the music of Piazolla in a very mature style like nobody else could do it, but then surprisingly Shoma did it like he could rival Stephane even though he is so much younger.

Stephane performed one of his long programs with Otoño Porteño by Piazolla when he was 24.

NBC SN comments on SP -- Tanith White and Ryan Bradley. They were nice and quiet during the skating!

During the group warmup:
T: Now we take a look at Shoma Uno. No World medal yet, but he’s poised to make a breakthrough with what he’s got in his “tool belt”.
R:We haven’t even spoken about him yet. This guy has the goods. He’s a prolific quad jumper, he’s a beautiful skater, he understands the music. I did a show with him earlier this year and watched him land 5 quads in a show program under spotlights. He has a ton of confidence.

R: Opening with the second most difficult jumping pass – 4F. Just beautiful! Where we’ve seen little mistakes in the past are the tight landings, making it difficult to add the 3T on for the combination. No problems today. 3A, a little to the outside, but right back into the choreography.

T.: Well, it’s tough enough to follow an Olympic champion but it’s even tougher to outskate him. In my opinion that absolutely did.

R: In all facets -- he jumped better, his program is stronger in my opinion, he was spinning very fast at the end, he has a unique entrance into the combo spin. He is such a talent. I know there’s a lot of hype around Yuzuru Hanyu, as there should be. But Shoma is so well rounded. We talked last year that between him and Boyang , Boyang is the better jumper. Shoma was the more complete package. Now all of a sudden, Shoma is adding the quads to the repertoire and he is growing as an artist still.

T. It was a beautifully complex program too with so much content frankly, compared to Yuzuru’s.

R: What’s really amazing to me is this entire program he’s in character, he’s so strong, he has this amazing presence. The moment the music stopped, he pumped his fist and had this little smile on his face, and he looked like the youngster he is, just enjoying the moment. It’s incredible to me to be able to portray such strength and confidence, because we often forget how young these guys are. The poise to be able to do this at a World Championship is just incredible.

T.: Some of those landings like we saw there on the 3A with that open free hip are what often gets him into trouble, but today he was able to hang on.

R: It definitely makes things a little harder. When you are adding on a 3T for a combo, you have to be able to fight a little harder. If he can learn to control those landings, I can’t even imagine what he is capable of. Being able to do those things with that tendency on the landing is amazing.

Oh my, Shoma is stealing some goodwill from Yuzu among the commentators! Go Shoma!

Thank you for all these translations, Winnie! That must've taken quite a bit of time.

The dutch commentary is so much more copious and enthusiastic than what our "controlled" german commentators usually deliver. Love it! And they seem to love Shoma! I second the sentiment about them specifically mentioning Shoma's abundance of transitions. That was the first thing that jumped out at me in your transcriptions.

From reading your other translations as well, they also seem pretty fair in their assessments. I don't like that Sigi Heinrich is always showing his biases so blatantly.

I don't agree with them here. I think it was very much a breakthrough year for Shoma. What else would one call a season where he landed on the podium at every competition he entered?

Maybe they forgot that Yuzu wasn't there? ;)

Wow, I did not realized that. Shoma did a mini-Yuna.

That could very well be. I guess it seemed strange to me that he said "did IT" without referencing anything before that. Very ambiguous. Just being a picky grammar person, I guess. :drama: Bottom line, thank you Stephane for helping Shoma. And I've loved reading about how much he enjoys working with Shoma

In fact he is the only male skater this season along with Yuzuru, who medaled in every competition he entered.
In ladies I think Medvedeva is the only one. In pairs and dance, the top 2 and top 3 at worlds did as well. But what a fantastic year for Sho!

Also guys i saw on twitter that there was some interview done with Shoma's grandpa. She said he was asked by his students (he is an art teacher) if he was as cute as Shoma when he was young and he answered he was cuter! He also said that Shoma was cute only until middle school. Finally apparently he is worried about Shoma and girls. He thinks he will have to chose between relationships and his career. I just read all that on twitter so don't take my word for everything!

From the way he talks during interviews, Shoma seems to be all about skating and gaming right now, so I think Shoma's grandpa can relax! (Shoma does seem to have a lot of fangirls though haha)

What!? I think Shoma is an attractive enough young man now, but I'm curious to see what he looks like when he grows into his face.

lol I think what the grandpa was saying is that he is worried that Shoma doesn't seem to be interested in relationships/doesn't have time for relationships

There is no reason for Shoma to stop skating if he's married with kids - look at Mura or Nobu. Why choose one over another? I understand it is harder for female skaters, but Shoma can enjoy the female attention, without worrying (In my mind he has an unrequited crush on Kanako)

And to be honest, I think he looks 'adult' already. He styled himself differently at this Worlds. The new SP costume makes him look taller and his hair in the LOCO doesn't scream "PUPPY" anymore. He still is small, but I think he won't grow anymore. I don't see his height, it's the same with Daisuke. I don't see them as small, as they have this aura that makes one forget it. When he's standing next to giant Yuzuru...well.... There was one photo at the Worlds gala with Yuzuru, Shoma and Mai, and Yuzuru looks like a father with his kids. Haha.

I agree. It's so weird picturing Shoma with a wife and kids though, because I've been watching him skate since he was so small. I feel old! :slink:

Grandpa interview is here, and he was saying that 1. He hopes Shoma can grow up to 160cm. Even though there's just that 1cm difference, that could help him express better in performances.
2.He thought Shoma has come to the age feeling curious about the girls, but if there's the possibility Shoma might choose dating instead of training he definitely hopes that won't happen.

I think everyone in this thread would know that NO.2 is not going to happen lol.
The only thing Shoma care about in this world (currently) is skating and games...Don't worry grandpa.
