2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

But Russia being where it is geographically and historically sees itself as Eurasian and therefore someone like Margarita Mamun doesn't stand out compared to say someone like Maria Sotskova (not sure what her background is).

Russia as a country is Eurasian, bur Russians are white Europeans. It's Maria Sotskova who doesn't stand out because she is 100% Russian like the majority of Russian citizens. There are almost no Bengali people in Russia so people with the same background as Margarita Mamun are very rare.

Yes former tennis player Marat Safin was Tatar but he just looks like a white man, could pass as German or Serbian. But Alina Zagitova, even though she's only half Tatar, is obvious that she's not 100% white?
Zagitova, along with Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, physically look part mongoloid (asian).

BTW, Tuktamysheva is named after Khan Tokhtamysh (Tuktamysh) who was a direct descendant of Ghengis Khan. Ghengis Khan's grandson - Batu Khan, established Ulus Jochi (the Golden Horde) and had a massive historic effect on medeival Kievan Rus. Most awesome last name in figure skating she has.

Tatars are even difficult to consider as a real ethnicity. There are numerous studied scriptures stating that the real Tatars were a nomadic, central asian tribes who were totally genocided by Ghengis Khan back in the 12'th century at the rise of his power. He would allegedly name all other resilient central asian peoples Tatars for he respected the stoic resistance of the original Tatar tribe.

I've done some historic and ethnic studying lately. I am eager do discuss and tell more if anyone is interested. :)

"He would allegedly name all other resilient central asian peoples Tatars for he respected the stoic resistance of the original Tatar tribe." - can you explain in other words what do you meant here? :scratch2: It's unintelligible English for me (I am Polish but ... ).

Basically, Tatars are not a true ethnicity but rather different people of central asia and the Caspian sea area. They are mostly, but not 100%, of mongoloid (asian) descent.

edit: Batu Khan also got into modern-day Poland and Lithuania causing havoc there. Mongolian Empire was goin' places. :eeking:

Well what links them is that most of them are Muslim + often Tatar language. Mongoloid phenotype dominates but you have some ethnic Tatars in this picture who are rather European - White looking too.

Now more on topic:

What is your dream team for Olympics for Russian Ladies?

My team is:

Pogorilaya, Sotnikova, Medvedeva

If you have more white, E. European genes, you will look "whiter". We must not forget that during the expansion of the Russian Empire and the USSR many parts of central asia were mixed with with Eastern Slavs (Rus/Ukr/Belarus). And yes, the Muslim influence is significant in central asia since Khan Uzbek accepted islam back in the 14'th century.

The DREAM team would be:

Radionova, Tuktamysheva, Sotnikova. All in their best shape. Yeah, dreams aren't always realistic.

edit: BTW Ares, I wanted to send this as a PM. Clear some of your storage, it is full.

Sounds good to me.:) Of course, I'd want Julia on there too, so I'll have to go with Liza and two of Adelina/Julia/Elena.

As for realism - it's so overrated.;)

Now my message box is empty :)

My "The DREAM team" would be:
Polina, Evgenia, Alina :dance3:

Looks like a perfect choice to me with one big if - if Polina develops artistry to even higher level than this year at the same time getting back to her last season pre-injury consistency and if Anna cannot get back to her fabulous Rostelecom shape. Otherwise, my dream team is Evgenya, Anna, and Alina. Wow, they are "ruthless beasts" when they are on!

yes. totally agree about Polina and Anna.
I wish to see Polina's fabulous jumps again. And I'm in love with her SP.
Anna.. I absolutely love her skating style but not her jumps or spins. And I just feel... you never know what to expect from her...

Ideal Olympic team is so hard to choose.
But I think Radionova, Medvedeva, Sotnikova.

Honourable mention also Lipnitskaya. And I like Tsurskaya and Zagitova as well. :confused2:

This is hard. Evgenia for sure and I think Adelina, not for drama, but because it would be a nice story to see her come back and have success. Then one of Polina or Alina. I like Anna a lot too and I'd be happy to see her there, but I agree with atsumiri, her skating style is nice, but I don't love her jumps or spins. Let's go with Evgenia, Polina and Adelina. I guess I'm lucky in some ways; I really like a lot of the Russian ladies, but I'm not super invested in any of them, probably since I only really started following ladies closely this season and Kaetlyn really captured my heart right away, so I'll be happy with a lot of different combinations for team Russia.

I do not care who is on the team unless one of them is Pogo... :slink:

I guess I would go with Medvedeva (obviously), Pogo, and probably Zagitova.

As for Adelina, I just don't see it happening. Successful comebacks are so rare and the Russian ladies field is too deep. I hope she finds what she is looking for from her comeback but I don't think it will be the Olympics.

Am I the only here who legitimately don't care particularly for Zagitova? :slink:

Her skating just does nothing for me, her
technical arsenal is mighty I admit but she leaves me cold, maybe because she's still junior and quite slow & raw. Backloading is rather not the reason behind my problem. We don't know how growing spurts / puberty affect her either. Neither I find her jumps all that appealling to watch.
