Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

A figure skating course needs to be taught with this video. Non-Yuzu fans can benefit so much from it as well.

On April 1, 2017, Yuzu performed a flawless dazzling free program for a new world record of 223.20 – making history once again!

(As we all know :coffee:)

I became a fan of Yuzu after watching Boston Requiem, so H&L has always been special, a perfect continuation of Requiem to me in many senses. At Worlds, Yuzu presented a transcendent, emotional performance… effortlessly built upon the foundation of a program of extreme beauty and complexity, and exquisite technique in all aspects—jumps, spins, skating :luv17:

I’ve been busy working on a special project since WC’s been over (and making Yata be pigeon for me), together with some very talented, very extra Hanyu fans’ from all over…

So here’s "Hope & Legacy” again––with annotated steps and turns in real-time + full performance analysis by Yulia, a blogger and a huge Yuzuru Hanyu fan. Ladies and gentlemen, Yuzu Hanyu!

(And here's link to Niconico version for Japanese fans)

When your season starts with two months off ice due to injury, followed by playing catch up with everyone else, and ends with a landed, first ever ratified 4Lo in competition; 4th consecutive GPF title; 2nd world title; a new world record in free skate (11th you've had overall); two YOLO layouts that brought two new firsts, 3 quads in the 2nd half and a 4T-Lo-3S combo; peaking at the right time; and you being healthy... then I guess we might say you haven't had a bad season after all :hap10:

Here’s to another amazing season together with Yuzu and you all! :yahoo:

Omg this was the video that I didn't know I needed. Seriously, thank you and all the other people who worked on this. It's such a detailed analysis, and all the comments were heartwarming too.

I think it's the perfect way to tell him "WE LOVE YOU YUZU!". Must be a precious gift to him :D I soo want him to watch it. I want him to feel that love :luv17:
Also if someone needs english to spanish or spanish to english translation you guys know i'm more than happy to help :slink:

yes please, hydro ;) now you're on the hook for doing translations XD XD XD spanish subs? :D

That's what Max said when he posted this to his facebook page! :) That classes should be taught with this.

End of the day, less arguments that dissolve into haterz!you!no!you!, more focus and understanding of what the skater is doing. Yuzu puts out so much on the ice (#extra) :luv17:

We've been getting some asks here and there for a slow-mo version too, so that's coming along :)

I am absolutely willing to do the spanish subs :D i want to contribute in any way i can to bring this to as many people as it is possible regardless of language. I might send it to some spanish language fan pages that might like this after i finish it :D

Anyway, good job for the team who made the video. It is a well-made one, wonderful!

I made a summary of success rates of Yuzuru's quad and triple jumps between 2010/2011 and 2016/2017 seasons. I already forgot which poster said some 50+ pages ago that it would be interesting to know these rates --> please send me a PM and I can share the link of the spreadsheet.

+ xeyra, maybe I'll make a comparison with other skaters too, at least compared to this season, but it would take a bit more time.

If we look at the success rates, the most successful of all the fully rotated, landed jumps (apart from GOE) is the triple flip (who would have thought?) which has a rate of 96% But it is misleading, because of lipping the rate is only 57% with +GOE.
3F is very closely followed by the beloved triple axel with a rate of 95%. If consider the number of executed jumps too, 3A is by far his strongest one, as he jumped it at competitions 130 times, from which 123 was fully rotated and landed (115 with +GOE)

Sally dear, can you PM me the link :) I made one my self for 15/16 season (including for Boyang, Patrick, Shoma and Javi too) but too lazy to do all season. skatedb.net has his overall career success rate for all jumps but they are not clear about how they consider popped jumps, negative GOE or YOLO layout :p
This must be quite a work, thank you and good job! :agree:

DG: The only downgraded jump with a fall was 4Lo in the FS Skate Canada, the others were Japanese Nats 2010 2S<<, the other 4Lo at SC and the 1Lo at GPF ()

URs with a fall: 2012 CoC FS 3A-3T<, 2012 Finlandia SP 4T<, 2012 GPF SP 3Lz-3T<, 2013 Worlds SP 4T<, or his 4Ts (2015 ACI both SP and FS, 2016 ACI FS), and his only underrotated 3A from which he fell was in his FS at Japanese Nats 2015.

Thanks for this. I always said that Yuzuru is incapable of landing UR jump (because if he UR his jump he will fall on his butt), having this laid out is nice to see

I can do the subbing part if you do the translations :D :D :D
(yay about the ticker finally working again. and.... youtube! needs to! catch up! with niconico! niconico is at 8.7k already! :o)

So basically I translate back to Russian now? :p
Or shall I provide some excited Russian commentaries? (Rus ESP comes to mind)

I'm going. Currently Level B for team SP; Level A for Men's SP; Level C for Men's LP. My friend in Korea is doing the lottery so I'll know on the 8th if we'll get anything better. The nice thing about going to worlds and meeting so many Japanese fans is that I already have takers for any extra tickets I end up with. And meeting new friends is always great, too. Apparently there will only be a tiny amount available to them.

Now I wish I balloted for the team event too... *sigh
Good luck to us! Hopefully we got the ballot that we wanted :yahoo:
(I don't hav any idea how many actually participate in this so really cannot predict my chance in getting them. Just anxious lol)
We should meet up if I get tickets! :D

Yay, thanks for all the love, everyone :luv17:

When I was editing the video and positioning the steps, I remember a moment when I suddenly realized that most of the footwork, even the crossovers, were set perfectly to music! Not a surprise, but small moment of wonder for me nonetheless  I wonder if the others (Lys, mildseven, Helena, and poor Fay who had to check over our work multiple times I owe you many translations ^_^|||) felt that too?

Just wanted to put out a call to all our talented translators on GS: We're looking for subs/translations of every language of (with the excited commentators, heh) and Shae-lynn's lovely quote at the end. I've set the video to accept community contribution of subs, but you can also PM me/ post the translations here :bow: Thanks very much with a yuzu on the top in advance :D

And again, we're looking to spread this as wiiiidely around as possible, so we'd love any help reblogging, retweeting, etc. <3

Firstly, thank you very much to everyone who worked on this video, it was incredibly fascinating to watch!! His performance always makes me emotional but now that I've learned more precisely about the technical aspect of it I'm a million times more impressed. As a new FS fan I can't tell you how informative and helpful the video was.

By the way, my native language is spanish and I'd love to help translating Shae-lynns quote and any other comments that may be needed...

EDIT: Here it is:
"Este programa es Yuzuru mismo. Yuzuru es esperanza, Yuzuru es legado. Yuzuru Hanyu como un atleta que siempre avanza, que nunca se rinde, que tiene fe... Es a quien un patinador más joven admirará, y pasará su legado a la próxima generación. Creo que su nombre será grabado en la historia, y dejará atrás una leyenda."

Thanks a lot, gladiolusc for the wonderful wonderful video!!
This is just nice! a few days ago I was thinking of learning more about step sequence but not sure where I should start from.
(I only know technicalities of jumps and spins for a long time, and can only tell there's some variation in steps without knowing the details)
Then boom, this video appears.
What's better than learning about something with your favourite program as an example :D :D

Hopefully this video can reach Yuzu in a short time! (and he can use it to study the whole summer lol)

His hair grows freakishly fast??? Is this proof that he is an alien :scratch2:

Seriously though, I'm so jealous because my hair grows very slowly.

His face also looks so different O_O Especially Sendai Monument Hanyu... definitely alien XD or Pooh was masquerading as Yuzu and did a poor job.

Thank you so much for making this video!:thank: It’s so informative and full of love for Yuzu and H&L. While watching this video I wanted to give all of you a biggest hug like this or like this. I will re-watch it again and again. Huge respect for the effort and love put into this…:2thumbs::love:

By the way, I found a few videos I want to translate in the trans request section of the spreadsheet (2011 4CC SP & FS by Jsports 4.) Is it OK to edit the spreadsheet myself? If not, please tell me whenever you have time. Thank you in advance!
