Deniss Vasiljevs

Love the video, even if I didn't understand lots of it. And can anyone tell us -- how is Deniss' Latvian? It seems like there are a lot of times where he is searching for a word. I would imagine he speaks more English than anything else...He is so amazing! He's all legs! :)

At the very end, was the TV person saying something about Canada?...Champery looks like something out of a movie -- so beautiful!

I love seeing these glimpses of training, and Deniss' new choreography looks great! His skating skills just keep getting better. I couldn't hear the music well enough to make a guess, but hip shimmy was fun. I'm so fascinated by these bits and pieces of the coaching and exercises. Especially that twizzle-triple salchow-spin-double loop thing! I wonder if that is prep for a quad. I hope someone can translate the Latvian so we can get the full story!

Edited once I realized what jump he was actually doing

So thankful for this new video! I'm growing fond of this reporter already

Yes I think it's Buble's version of Sway. No complaints here because MAMBO! :yes2: (or is it salsa? I'm sorry, never learned the difference...)

(EDIT: It's not Sway, I think it's a mix, but it does sound like Buble)

Stephane's advice always on point, now we know why Deniss was in Portugal. Last season was a tough one for him, too many changes in so little time, and we know by his own words that training under Stephane made him take things more seriously and working even harder, both on and off the ice, so no wonder he looked a bit tired by the moment this video was shot.
I really hope he takes a good (even if short) rest now and that he can get inspiration from many new places and people. Champery is breathtakingly beautiful, but maybe a little bit too cold for this new music? idk

On a related note, I can't wait to see the new fancams of FAOI this year. With the latest huge additions to the skaters list of the show I'm sure Deniss is both really excited and nervous! I'm so happy he gets the chance to skate on the same ice as all those legends. If he had a huge fanbase in Japan until now, imagine in a few months...

For a language he uses only for homework and interviews it sounds really great. But yeah, he searches for words often and uses English ones instead and often repeats same words (like "very", this seems to be his favourite).

^^^Thx for that clarification. I know he is actually quite a linguist, so I was just curious. I just love it when I hear him and Stephane speaking English to each other!

ETA -- Nice to read the video translation. Sounds like Deniss really needs to rest up while in Portugal. He has a very busy schedule coming up, but then I guess he's always busy.

Well, actually, the thing is that Latvian is not his first language. He studies at Russian school and speaks Russian with his family. Of course he speaks English better then Latvian as he practices it more often. I, unfortunately, have the same problem - I left Latvia 6 years ago and my Latvian level now is only enough to order a meal at the restaurant

Sporta Studija has added English subtitles to the video :) (same link as before)

I hope they will continue to keep up the great coverage of Deniss! It's much appreciated!

I dare you all not to get hooked and keep on staring at this forever.

^^^ That's unfair!
First time I saw it reminded me of Javi's hip shaking move during last season's LP, except a lot less... shy? : ) Add one of his sunshine smiles to it and I'll see you all in hospital.

Instead, I keep being mesmerized by his figure here (don't judge me. I'm an artist and I appreciate uh... flawless anatomy when I see it )

Oh yes... I wonder what Michaelangelo would do with him and his physique if he were here today :luv17:
I think that is the difference between Deniss and Javi. As good a skater as Javi is, he doesn't have that natural, inborn pizzazz as a performer like Deniss does (or should I say much less of it) The boy stands out in it despite his tender age. It's mind boggling to imagine what kind of a skater/entertainer he will grow into in the coming years!

Deniss definitely has the gift of showmanship. It was very evident even in videos of him when he was much younger.

Fancam of Deniss' SP from Worlds
It is so interesting to see how Deniss' performance looks from the crowd. He goes slower into the jumps than I thought from TV coverage but his ability to project and move with the music is much more pronounced, so mesmerizing.
I'm not a big fan of Buble but if it's Deniss, he can sell anything and I'll buy it :love:

Thanks for the link - I enjoyed the enthusiastic commentary from the man who was recording it, too.

Agree about Buble...as long as it's not Cry Me A River or Feeling Good, I guess I can live with it!

^^^My favorite enthusiastic fan cam guy, Enrique Coma. He has posted many fan cams, and (seriously) I would love to meet this guy. His love of certain skaters and fs in general is awesome. And his commentaries in half Spanish-half English can be hilarious at times.

Oh, I will have to check out his other videos! That sounds like some great entertainment during the off season!

What a great puff piece; how beautiful Champery is.:)

Well, since I actually like Michael Buble, I tried to hear the music Deniss was skating to, but the announcer talked so loudly over it, I can't be sure.... In the first skating sequence, I do think it may be "Sway" (and not necessarily a mix), which would certainly fit with Deniss' hip movements. If Deniss does a program to "Sway", I will have died and gone to heaven:drama: But it's not the same music in the second skating clip, which was supposedly his program, so I don't know.

I do wish Deniss had some company there. Julian Yee is another one of my "small fed" favs. Do you think we can get them to train together?
