Even though Nathan was only in the Novice division he actually scored higher than all the other men in the junior and senior divisions except for Alex Johnson!

That double Axel entry was amazing. He basically skated on one foot with multiple changes of edge then changed foot into the reserve walley then a counter 2A and then the exit was also amazing. Nathan, why the 3A give you so much trouble when you could do all this with a 2A? Edit: And there were other great moments on that program too.

Glad you retrieved that competition result, isn’t that some incredible score!! Hope Nathan stays healthy, and gets well choreographed programs next season. I have my fingers crossed.:luv17:

OK so this is a thing that's been going through my head. Wouldn't it be amazing if nathan did a skating adaptation of the Golden Idol variation from la Bayadere (as an ex)? I don't think it's been done before?

While it is very audience friendly there for figure skating, it seems Japan Figure Skating Federation is making sure their potential biggest threats (Nathan be one of them) are fully exposed, examined in Japan, and exhausted from traveling to Japan early in the season, and it is Olympic season this time! Strategy plays a crucial role in battlefield.

Since Nathan, Karen, Zhenia, and Alina are young I doubt they'll be very tired. Nathan will have already debuted in the US Classic. I think Nathan will be a good draw and it will be more exciting with him vs. Shoma, if that's who they chose. I assume Yuzuru will be focused on CoR instead.

Hey, it's good exposure and good money for not that much work. And he may want to use this opportunity to get used to traveling back and forth to Asia, which he will likely have to do again for both the GPF and Olympics.

Without warning, the 19-year-old shook up the establishment last season and forced every other man in the sport to take his game one step higher.

Though he does not have the complete package at this stage, Chen’s five-quad outburst in the free skate at U.S. nationals last January gave everyone an insight into where the sport is headed — and what an exciting, high-flying future it is going to be.

It was not all plain sailing in his first season in the senior ranks, however. He won Finlandia Trophy, was fourth at his first Grand Prix in France, second at NHK Trophy and the silver medalist at the Grand Prix Final. Gold at Four Continents in February was followed by a sixth-place finish at the 2017 World Championships.

Nerves, inexperience and technical errors contributed to Chen’s failure to medal in Helsinki.

Surprised for USFSA choosing him to that competition. I think Rafael has said he doesn't want Nathan deal with to much travel(and maybe jet lag problem), or he thinks Nathan should attend another competition as the warm-up game for RC?
I feel a little bit strange bc RC is just two-weeks around.

It's the Japanese Fed who invites the skaters to the Japan Open, so not sure if USFSA has much to do with it. It's a quick turnaround between JO and Rostelecom but it's the same as the time between Skate America and GPF, so this could be good preparation.

Q: Of all your program costumes which one has been your favorite?
Nathan: I really liked my red Michael Jackson costume from a year ago.

Q: I understand you enjoyed the ramen when you visited Sapporo. Which was your favorite kind?
Nathan: I loved the miso ramen!

Q: You've stated that macarons are your favorite type of sweet. What's your favorite flavor?
Nathan: I like vanilla, and salted caramel.

Q: I love your "Stole the Show" program. How did you come up with the choreography?
Nathan: Thanks! I listen to the lyrics and try to match the movements to what the song says. Also I just have fun and let my body move naturally and decide which movements I like.

Q: Do you have any dislikes or phobias?
Nathan: I don't like spiders haha. Otherwise I'm mostly fine with everything!

Q: If you were going to be stranded on a deserted island, what type of animal would you take with you?
Nathan: Hmm, maybe a dog or an otter

Q: I've heard you like cars. What do you drive and what would you like to drive in the future?
Nathan: Yes I love cars. I drive my moms Prius right now, but maybe in the future I can buy something cool! Like a jaguar or nice BMW or something.

Q: Have you seen any movies recently? What's your favorite genre?
Nathan: I like comedy the best. Anything funny. Also like action. I enjoy the marvel and D.C. movies.

Q: Which skaters do you admire artistically?
Nathan: Lambiel, Mao, Curry, etc.

To me, Lambiel, Mao, and Curry often incorporate many balletic movements in their programs.
Especially Curry, the Wikipedia says he was famous for combining ballet and modern dance influences into his skating.

It's interesting, but it seems a fair number of Mao's fans have transferred their allegiance over to Nathan since her retirement, and his balletic style is often cited as a major reason.

A: Maybe Greece. I'd like to go to Santorini Island.

Gaahh! :gaah: Nathan is 17, not 19! When you're 17, 2 years is a big percentage of your age. And Nathan is all the more incredible because he's so driven, composed and undemonstrative (off the ice) for his age.

But his daring moves at U.S. nationals set a new standard and changed the thought process of every elite male competitor — a revolution that took less than five minutes.

But this great wrap-up sentence is first-rate! I really love it. It's what the figure skating commentators, former competitors, etc. all seem to get, although many fans of Nathan's competitors naturally may be reluctant to see it. Also that Nathan is most definitely not just about quads jumps; his skating is thrilling musically, especially, where he uses and embodies the music for dramatic effect.
