I didn't know about that. I thought he was just frustrated with them professionally. Besides Katsalapov could have blamed Volkov for his poor performance at EC and just left him. It is telling though because EI called Volkov a whiz with respect to technical issues. Oh well.

I'm a new ice dance fan, so I have a question: what does it mean, "you could drive a truck between them when they skate in hold." ? What do I need to look out for when watching a dance team? They should be skating very close together most of the time? And what is "in hold"? How do u know when a team is in hold?

Exactly what it sounds like. They are holding onto each other, generally in a dance hold, skating face to face, with both hands touching each other, or closer. With an arm wrapped around the other's waist. Or sides almost glued together. Different holds are appropriate for difference dances. A waltz or quickstep hold, should actually have a strong frame, i.e. there should be more space between the upper bodies; but the hips closer together.

Just, in general, the closer a team is at the hips while performing. More face-to-face skating. More speed while doing both. These are all good things to look for.
If the dancers are out of hold, performing required side-by-side elements, then you look for close, uniform amounts of distance between the skaters while performing.
The catch--and it's a big one--is that you cannot see speed on television. You have to be in the arena to see it. Without watching an event live, it's very difficult to tell who is moving fast while skating close together and who is sacrificing speed in order to do so. In my experience, almost all teams slow down when they begin performing tight, intricate footwork, either in or out of hold. So there is a level of balance there. A team may be skating closer together, but sacrificing speed & flow. And a team that skates farther apart may be gaining points for speed & flow. So it's not cut & dry. You want both, and that is very difficult to find with a truly intricate present-day footwork sequence.

I kind of hope not. They are a team that could have some future after the Olympics. At least he's stronger than Bagin.

Curious, it seems to me the common denominator between I/K and D/S is Morozov. Probably the nomadic lifestyle began to take a toll on the poor guy. But all this could just be rumours like I/K having a tryout recently, haha. D/S should be with Morozov, Amodio and W/P in some camp in the hills of France, Vaujany, I believe. Also as he's really only borderline better than Bagin, what future does he have with either Mrs. M or Lena? I've come to realize if a team doesn't have a strong male lead, its pretty much pointless, IMHO.
Misery likes company, what kind of partner does his daughter have anyways? They can both paint each other's nails and trash talk the woeful state of male ice dancers in Russia. And like how many partners has Anton had in the past three seasons? Three...eek!

I wouldn't say he's that stronger. But not as weaker, perhaps. It's not like there's much to choose in the Russian crop out of the top teams. Bagin is tall and strong for Elena, but I don't know if he's not too tall. Also, he lacks smoothness in his skating, and perhaps it was something to do with Stavitskaya, idk.
