I didn't see the clip you mentioned, but that doesn't sound right. Didn't Tara Lipinski win Worlds in 1997 and then win gold at the Olympics in 1998?
Yep. Also Yuna Kim 09-10.

Katarina Wiit, Kristi Yamaguchi, Oksana Bauil, Tara Lipninski, Yuna Kim demand a history lesson.Apologies if this has been mentioned already in this thread... I was rewatching Zagitova's FS from Russian nationals yesterday, and I picked up on an interesting point in Tarasova's commentary: she said that, for over 100 years, the Olympic gold medal has never been won by the lady who was world champion in the previous year. Can anyone confirm -- did I understand that correctly?
That is fascinating if true -- and it certainly supports the idea that the Olympics is a different headgame than any other competition...
Just a thought: If Dabin Choi skates her GP assignments clean, and skates clean too at the Olympics, will we have another Sotnikova? I doubt it, but imagine the drama.![]()
Yeah like how in the Sochi Olympic season, everyone did mao and Yulia as contenders bc of their gp series results but they didn't even medal in the individual event. The same story could be for Evgenia.
Peggy Fleming, Trixi Schuba, Katarina Witt. This is like opening a can of worms.
Also Yuna Kim: WC in 2009, OGM 2010.
Maybe she said reigning junior world champ? That might make this make more sense.
She said: "over a hundred years". AFAIK junior championships do not exists for so long.Maybe she said reigning junior world champ? That might make this make more sense.
Sadly she has to skate consistently the whole season first. With 3A I don't see she will be consistent. But she has nothing to lose anyway.I'd like to see Mirai have a comeback this season, make the Olympic team and possibly get her a medal in the team event![]()
If Mirai Nagasu can land this 3A consistently and not underrotate her jumps, I could see her doing fairly well. Not a contender for a gold medal, but maybe a bronze.
I'm also curious to see how Polina Edmonds will come out this season. I could easily see her winning nationals if she's back to her old form.
I also think that Polina Tsurskaya keeping her SP from last season is a brilliant move. If she skates it clean, she could be up in the mix when the free comes around. It was one of my favorite programs from last year (senior or junior).
