Ladies OGM Contenders 2018

Apologies if this has been mentioned already in this thread... I was rewatching Zagitova's FS from Russian nationals yesterday, and I picked up on an interesting point in Tarasova's commentary: she said that, for over 100 years, the Olympic gold medal has never been won by the lady who was world champion in the previous year. Can anyone confirm -- did I understand that correctly?

That is fascinating if true -- and it certainly supports the idea that the Olympics is a different headgame than any other competition...
Katarina Wiit, Kristi Yamaguchi, Oksana Bauil, Tara Lipninski, Yuna Kim demand a history lesson.

Just a thought: If Dabin Choi skates her GP assignments clean, and skates clean too at the Olympics, will we have another Sotnikova? I doubt it, but imagine the drama. :laugh2::drama::eek:

I'd be even worse considering Dabin doesn't have an history of successes.

Adelina was considered a top contender for a while (she won everything in juniors, 5 times national champion, and second at the GPF after the SP), but always failed to deliver until Sochi. I don't think i'd be a shock though, South Korea is known for pushing very hard their own athletes at home competitions.

Yeah like how in the Sochi Olympic season, everyone did mao and Yulia as contenders bc of their gp series results but they didn't even medal in the individual event. The same story could be for Evgenia.

Yeah let's say Mao's scores at both NHK and GPF and Yulia scores at the COR were controversial.

Oh dear... Well, that answers that question!

Turns out it was actually during Alina's SP. Here's the moment if any Russian speakers want to weigh in. It sounded like Tarasova said: "Еще обратите внимание, что исторически никогда не выигрывала девочка олимпийские игры та, которая выигрывает предыдущий чемпионат мира. [...] Больше ста лет, никогда."

Maybe she said reigning junior world champ? That might make this make more sense.

I agree. However, she certainly is a great jumper and her future seems very bright. I still prefer Meds performance quality due its maturity but, we'll see how things go on GP this year. I can see them both making it to the GPF.

I agree she probably meant Junior World Champion.
In fact in recent times no one freshly turned senior has had a lot of success at the Olympics, but I think it is at least partially just a coincidence. If Yuna and Mao had been age eligible for Torino they would have been a threat, if Yulia had skated like at the team event I believe she would be the reigning Olympic Champion, so just because it hasn't happened before I wouldn't write off the little ones.
Especially because I think there is more talent coming up this year and in the next few years than what is already in the senior category. These quad has felt like filler for the Senior ladies up to now.
I don't want to be disrespectful, because obviously there is a lot of talent and effort in the senior ranks as well, but this entire quadriennial I've enjoyed the Junior ladies more than the Seniors: more interesting competitions and weirdly enough more compelling programs IMHO.

There is not precedence of the Junior World Champion winning Olympics the next year. But we're not living in the age where PCS is meaningless and is tied to Tech. If Alina brings out the most difficult program and executes, she's in with a chance. I wish her luck but I just want to see her live this season. It would be amazing.

Yep, and her fellow commentator followed up with a question about Helsinki, so I think it's fair to assume they were referring to senior worlds.

Maybe the conclusion from all of this is that Tarasova can sometimes be an unreliable narrator (or, at least, when her cohosts are not willing to challenge her). But I still love to hear her opinions! :)

Sam L, I am also wishing a good season for Alina. Her Don Quixote program aligns jumps with music in a way I've rarely seen, and it's thrilling to watch. It would be a true Olympic "moment" if she skated that program to its full potential during the ladies free skate.

If Mirai Nagasu can land this 3A consistently and not underrotate her jumps, I could see her doing fairly well. Not a contender for a gold medal, but maybe a bronze.

I'm also curious to see how Polina Edmonds will come out this season. I could easily see her winning nationals if she's back to her old form.

I also think that Polina Tsurskaya keeping her SP from last season is a brilliant move. If she skates it clean, she could be up in the mix when the free comes around. It was one of my favorite programs from last year (senior or junior).

I'd like to see Mirai have a comeback this season, make the Olympic team and possibly get her a medal in the team event :)

I loved her sp from last season, where did u find out that she's keeping it?? I'm nearly starved for off-season information!
Any information on the music choices for Anna and Maria?

Sadly she has to skate consistently the whole season first. With 3A I don't see she will be consistent. But she has nothing to lose anyway.

If Mirai skates clean at Nationals with a 3A in both SP and FS, she could win the title.

I also liked Polina's Cersei moment in the SP. But man, she needs to chop off some of those "hand stop" moments and let her skating do the talking. She's my favorite Eteri girl, actually, because her skating skills is fairly up there with the best, and her jumps are not cringey to the lower back.
