2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I cant seem to remember but why was Gubanova didnt go to Junior Worlds last year? She won her GPs right?

She fell apart at Junior Nationals and didn't make the podium (maybe didn't even make top 5???) so sadly she didn't get to go. In hindsight she probably should have gone instead of Polina or Stanislava. I hope she gets to go this year though.

I have a question about Courtney Hicks. Do you guys think that if she hits her programs, that she will do well on the GP. I never really noticed her until last season. She really made me take notice but, she still hasn't made a big breakthrough at Nationals. Between Courtney and Angela Wang, I hope one of them can finally make the podium after having some truly spectacular "Moments" in their careers.

Courtney has two GP medals already, so she's shown she could do well there. Alas, however, she hasn't got any GP spot this season. (She's my favourite US lady, so I'm a little sad about this.)

How many TBD spots are available for her? I would think that she'll be up for Skate America and Rostelecom since she medaled there last season. At least I hope she is.

The TBD spots are host picks, so the Rostelecom vacant spot will go to a Russian skater. There are several American skaters who could get the Skate American spot. I don't know how high Courtney's chances are. However, she's reasonably high on the substitution list, so she might get a GP spot if any falls vacant due to any skater withdrawing.

It is going to be so exciting at the US Nationals. Will Gracie storm back with a vengeance or will we see a melt down. Will Ashley be the skater of consistency. Which Karen will show up? Is Polina able to mount a credible comeback. Can Mirai pry the door open? Is Mariah the new Polina - someone you sort of know is good and somehow people forget? Will Bradie, Courtney, Angela, Caroline. Amber sneak on to the oly team?

So Gracie was scheduled to perform in the short at the Onyx Figure Skating Challenge in Rochester, MI (where Patrick Chan performed), but she didn't show up. Not an official scratch, but she didn't show up to her ice call apparently.

I know her birthday was yesterday, but I'm hoping everything's all right with her. It wasn't an important competition per se, but it would have been nice to see her get out on summer competition ice after the bad year she had.

When does champs camp begin? And , will we only see the skaters who are definitely going to be on the GP? "Maybe " skaters who haven't gotten an assignment aren't invited?

It begins tomorrow. Don't know if skaters without definitive assignments are invited.

Madi and Evan are doing IG stories for USFS today, but so far the only ladies they have captured is Karen Chen's photo shoot.

Although I would count Alexa Knierim, who they also saw:laugh:

While i do believe Gracie is the US's best hope/chance for an individual gold she also could completely miss the team and I am not sure I am a huge fan of someone skating a one off program and winning. Nice story but well I guess I feel sorry for a skater like Michelle Kwan who has be soo consistent and classy. But life isn't fair.

Just saw the team photo, for ladies there was Polina, Ashley, Gracie, mirai, Mariah, Karen, and I'm pretty sure Bradie is there which would suggest she's getting the tbd spot for skate America.

Yup, that's bradie. She's wearing a hat and standing next to mirai.
I really would've liked it if they invited Courtney and others to come "fight" for that SA tbd spot. More competition helps, I think.

Yes, would have liked to see Courtney there. Maybe USFS is figuring that she is high on the international list and has a much better chance than Bradie to get a GP invite (if/when someone withdraws).

They're figuring that Bradie defeated her head-to-head this summer with this year's programs. They didn't have to figure beyond that. Bradie had the top summer score of the ladies in the running and won two summer competitions. (Broadmoor Open & Philadelphia). She was the only lady to do that, and the competition in Philadelphia was legit. She was the most obvious choice.

It does not mean that spot is official. If USFSA wanted to wait and monitor Polina, they could. (After Glacier Falls, I'd be surprised if that was the case). But if they invited Bradie, she is clearly in the running for S.A.

With regards to Ross & Bradie, they are using the results from the summer competitions, the most recent results with this season's programs.

I agree that Bradie is probably the top choice for SA when I saw her last month, she was kinda blah ... Amber was definately much more exciting to watch

If ISFS wanted to sell more tickets to SA, the I think Amber is a much better choice. Doubt that would ever happen but just sayin'
