So tired of this topic. But since it has re-surfaced, what was wrong with the Sochi scoring was the margin by which Adelina won. The scores for the top three in the long program (and Mao) all should have been within a point or two. I can't say who would have won (except Mao would not have) had scoring been closer. I think the PCS scoring was the main problem. Adelina may have gotten some tech gifts but so did Yuna.

Exactly!!! It's been almost 4 years since Russia destroyed figure skating and I'm just as pissed and always will be, until Justice is done(which I don't actually believe will happen because I'm not an optimist)

I don't even know what to say about a comment like this. IMO, it couldn't be more "Inaccurate". When the skaters get to an international event, they are judged by a panel from all over the world. Unless I'm mistaken, the tech callers are basically a living computer and with slow motion available, Med wouldn't get her big numbers unless she earned them. I was not in Sochi but, I have seen Adelina in person and she was a brilliant skater with huge jumps that had great distance. The audience literally gasped when she did her opening 3/3 Combo. She was also a very good performer and was a crowd favorite.
I've said this before but, the Russian skaters are extremely friendly and gracious to their fans. Like Plushy, Adelina signed autographs until her coach pulled her away from the crowd. Am I the only person who now thinks that Adelina deserved gold or silver at the very least? I didn't personally like the choreo as I felt it wasn't "her" so to speak, but her jumps were gorgeous, her spins and flexibility were fabulous and apart from a little trip on a combo she skated her socks off tbh.
I adored Yuna's skating but felt that she deserved the silver this time. Still a brilliant achievement!

History is something we need to remember and learn from. To call important happenings of the past "over and done with" is what leads to the same destructive acts repeating.
We are in the same spot we were 4 years ago, where the person annointed to be Olympic champion is not getting edge calls on their flutz, is not getting underrotation calls on their cheated toeloops, and will get Level 4 calls on their step sequence even if they make a mistake and only deserve Level 3. Although at least Medvedeva's footwork sequences are more legitimate then Sotnikova's in 2014. I've only seen 1 instance so far of Medvedeva not hitting a required turn and still getting the Level 4.
How is it disrespectful of that poster to use an accurate adjective? When a child is spoiled by their parents it doesn't mean it is the child's fault, but that simply is the fact of the matter. The child's viewpoint is thus going to be altered and it's no different with Medvedeva right now. She continues to be told by the competition scores that her skating is perfect and as a result she does not try to improve, she only keeps doing more and more of the flawed technique that is being given a free pass. Like the way she threw in extra cheated toeloops in some of her competitions this past season, as if that is supposed to show some kind of extra power. Or how she continues to just focus on doing arms over the head in as many jumps as possible, instead of trying to improve any other aspect at all.
I am talking about figure skating.
Unfortunately or not, figure skating is a sport that anyone can watch and give their opinion. I watch Medvedeva winning undeserved medals and I, as a human being who don't appreciate injustices, get angry about it. If you don't get angry about injustices, you're lucky for being so enlightened!

I'm a huge fan of Yuna Kim indeed. She's my favorite skater ever. For me, she's a living legend. Kwan is a legend.
Mao is a legend. And Medvedeva.............. Just an average skater.

Also, I called her spoiled because she's been spoiled by judges and that is noticeable. Just watch her reaction when she doesn't get an world record.

Adelina and Medvedeva are two very different scenarios and skaters. Medvedeva is expected to win because of unmatched consistency. Sotnikova winning was unexpected, especially when she was the backup with everyone backing Lip.
Saying Medvedeva is unworthy because she does have a definitive lutz (which of course is not how the tech specialists see it) is like saying Kim is unworthy of her OGM because she neglected to do a 3L and was missing the complete set of triples... and was unworthy of Sochi gold because she only attempted 6 triples whereas others did 7. And obviously people would disagree with that assertion.

Well, not if she deserves to win. It's possible she will just skate the best out of anyone, regardless of the overscoring, as she has done these past 2 seasons. Other people keep making bigger technical mistakes than she does and nobody is really pushing the envelope artistically, so Medvedeva having trite choreography may not matter in terms of who deserves to win. The sport is currently stuck in a rotten state where these aspects don't matter as much anymore, thus people do not focus on them as much.
The audience's reaction is exactly what helps with the home cooked gold.
If the audience was sleeping like they were during Yuna's FS (except for the Koreans of course), it would be difficult for people to think Adelina's skating was amazing.
What she did before or after her skating, if she was nice or angry or kind or chatty or friendly or whatever, simply does not matter. What matters is her performance. Her jumps, her spins, her skating skills, everything she did on the ice. Which for me, was not enough for winning gold. Was it the best skate of her life??? Maybe it was. And if it was, congrats to her for achieving her best. But Yuna skated perfectly in her SP, she shouldn't have been so close to Adelina's score. Then in the FS the only problem she had was with the Lutz which was under rotated I think, she had a shaky landing. And Adelina? Wrong edges, under rotations, pre rotations, two foot landing, terrible choreography, poor quality edges on her step sequence. The only thing great about her skating was some of her spins(the ones less traveled...)
You simply cannot compare Yuna -the legend to Adelina - not even close to the podium at Worlds.
You cannot explain her score inflation.
There are many analysis of the scores, look it up. Adelina should've been, maybe, a silver.

If she wins because there was no one better that's fine.
That has actually happened a lot.
And that's fair, obviously.
What I don't think is fair is she getting a huge margin from others because of her nonsense GOE's. She doesn't get edge calls, the judges don't seem to notice her under rotated and pre rotated jumps.
And don't even get me started on her ridiculous PCS...
That's what makes everything even more sad: she would've won anyway, why destroy figure skating????????

Weirdly, because B of P talked about '88, I had a flashback. As a Canadian I never thought Liz Manley should win the OGM in Calgary. I have always felt that Witt won fair and square. That's my memory..but hey it's nearly 30 years ago. I do remember hating the B/B program winning and crying over G/G winning gold because I love them so much. I really wanted Orser to win but Brian Boitano was better that night.
I remember thinking at the time that Midori would be a star in the future and was super excited to see where she would go. I think, maybe, she could have been put into the bronze medal position but I did think she lacked polish (which totally makes sense because she was young and inexperienced).
I can only say that I disagreed with Lipinski thing because to me she wasn't the skater Kwan was and I wasn't sure about the Adelina decision because I would have chosen Yuna.
I really wish Mao would have gotten an Olympic gold but I'm unsure who she should replace. Whose gold are we giving to Mao? She couldn't have won in 2014 after the tanked short.

Yes, I agree it's not the same thing. What I meant it that would be also undeserving because I don't see her as an Olympic champion. I don't see her a record breaker World champion. I see her as someone whose artistry is similar to of a junior skater and whose jumps need adjustments just as a junior skater's. Exactly like Adelina. I think they are same level, except for the consistency. But it's easy to not fall when you're not trying to evolve.
So for me, Medvedeva winning should be just as unexpected but it won't be. because she's been manufactured to be the winner since she entered senior level.
Sotnikova had the advantage of her home crowd. I see a lot of people justifying her win saying "oh but the crowd was going nuts, they loved her skating, it was the skate of the night!"
Of course it was....
I think after Midori, that was the worst robbed medal we've seen.

While Asada is the opposite, when it matters the most she sometimes does not deliver. And that's what happend, unfortunetely.

It was the obvious bet: when there's Yuna, Kostner and Mao you know the podium it's going to be Yuna, Kostner and Mao(in whatever order).

I actually thought it would be Kostner who would bomb to be honest. Mao's short was just.. yeah. Tragic is probably the best word for it. I'm glad she came back to win worlds. It made me feel all warm and squishy inside.

I haven't been following skating as long as you, only since early Sasha Cohen days, but I still swear that the 2014 WC was the best event I've ever seen. Not because my favorite skater won...she didn't...although Mao is ridiculously high on my list. It's because the crowd brought the skaters to life. The skaters brought the crowd to life. The energy was there and so many skaters brought their absolute best. That group in the SP with all three Japanese ladies skating strong. It just felt like something good was happening and seeing Mao win was just magical...especially after what happened in Sochi to her.

That's great to hear, because it seems like there has been a brainwashing of sorts in recent times about Witt's program. The dedication to character in her Carmen is exquisite, with many details that seem to get overlooked just because she has an "easier" section of choreography, not using full speed. Very few people have ever been so evocative with their movement in a skating program. It's night and day between what she does there and what people do now as a "choreography sequence", or the unimaginative footwork sequences and transitions we currently see.

Yeah..it's weird. I never thought Witt winning in '88 was controversial. At the time she seemed so much better than anyone else who was skating. She had presence and star quality. We could only wish we had someone with her piazz skating now. would probably put more butts in the seats.
