Her jumps were very high, difficult entry and exit as usual for Eteri's students. Still 2 points lower then Trusova at her debut.

Congrats for a strong win for Tarakanova, but I'm really not a fan of her skating. She has some nice edge work here and there but her movements lack refinement, and some of her jumps are rather rough looking (judges were rather generous on GOE). Trusova is still my fave this season although it's nice to see Tarakanova do the two of the hardest possible combos.

I think that's what people like about her though. There are plenty of the whole been there done that choreographic based programs focused on refinement and lord knows they'll be plenty of more to come. It's what judges and traditional fans crave. I say refinement be damned and just enjoy the wild spirit this girl has and let's see where it goes. I'm hoping we can start to see more of it honestly.

This doesn't mean I can't respect and appreciate a good classic style that's simple and elegant. In fact.....they both probably help me appreciate the other one the more I think on it.

To me, the main thing is that Tarakanova has good stamina. Be so fast in the end it's just wow. About program, hey! It's her first skate. Also it's her first clean skate. It's still a bit unpolished program. She was in a hurry. So draw conclusions is meaningless now. And about movements or arm movements - look at Radio's "Titanic" program. There were also some awkward movements too and so what. What I like is Liza's arm movements, especially at her Europeans 2016 LP. It was so soft, nice and... sexy. :

Even if we decide that Alina has already gone through puberty, she is still small and light. Medvedeva is also very thin. Gubanova is of a quite different build.

Thanks, she reminds me of Irina Slutskaya a bit.

I really loved Tarakanova skating. She called forth the storm clouds and brought down the thunder and drenched the ice with passion. I especially liked her short program where she wiggled out of her strait jacket and made a mad dash for freedom before being caught and put back in her strait jacket again. Her wildness and energy and lack of refinement actually worked in her favor for this program.
She also added some nice flourishes to the end of her jumps together with some excellent spins. Tarakanova shows that there is not just one way to skate to be successful. I congratulate her on her massively successful debut and look forward to her developement in the future

Rika is a very talented and strong skater. Clean skate with 3A definitely will give her a gold medal. For Dunya now more important to feel the junior intertnational field. In the last two seasons she obviously had puberty. If in puberty period she jumped like that... than after this she has to be in a very good shape. I hope she gained speed in her skating and in her spins.

It depends how many of them will participate. Considering that Anna S is injured, and Alena Kostornaya's status is unknown I don't know. Btw, I remembered in the last season was the same situation about wondering to list another girl, when Dunya won event by event. But RusFed didn't list her. So... Three Eteri's girls, two of them I guess will make it. What about Dunya - will see.

But seriously, Latvia is very interesting. The least charismatic, I would say, of the Eteri's power squad Dasha Panenkova will face the most decorated Japanese junior - a 3A master Rika Kihira. If she manages to win then it will be hard to deny that Eteri's girls rule the world.

Yes, of course. But she has been with Eteri for some time. Eteri isn't exactly going to chase her out if she can jump, is she? Though Panenkova has always seemed kind of a black sheep of Eteri's group, not someone of whom great things are expected. And she doesn't have a childlike body but she still isn't really built like Gubanova, who always seemed a candidate for difficult puberty. Maybe if Eteri had taken Nastya a while ago she might have done something (not involving starving Nastya), although I have doubts. Now, why would she want to take it on? Whether Mishin would want to do something - he couldn't fix Nugumanova and she ended up leaving. He is left with Samodurova who is not exactly a shining example of good jump technique. He hardly needs another difficult girl in his group.

Debutant Panenkova can't beat clean, decorated sophomore Rika Kihira with 3A. I would stop watching JGP, if that happened. :sarcasm:

That's probably why Panenkova is the Eteri's girl who was left to face Kihira. But the one most out of luck is Fedichkina, not much chance of being higher than third. But then she hasn't done as well as she could in the test skates or the St. Petersburg competition so nobody to blame for being stuck in that event.

She was outjumping Trusova and Shcherbakova in novices in 2015 and she was just as unpolished and rough as she's now, so I'm not entirely sure the claims of potential artistic progress are well-based.
I just start to think people need that one skater in every generation, who maybe doesn't have the skills of other top supertalents and prodigies, but impresses them with competitive drive and is "energetic and wild" - that one case of wildness and pure will winning over innate elegance, sophistication and beauty making it healthier to really appreciate the latter.

After all, if there were 6 new Gubanovas every year in JGP, would we be able to fully acknowledge human excellence in figure skating?

Is it necessary to come up with half-baked theories to explain why others appreciate different skaters than you? People just have different tastes and skaters can resonate with them (or not) for any reason at all...the qualities that matter to you may not be as important to someone else, and vice versa.
