2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Moscow lists for Stage I of the Russian Cup (15-19 September) are out. Vasilieva is skating in Juniors - preparation/not really counting on getting that JGP spot after all?.. Also Emelianova, Kurakova, Safonova, Sinitsina, Sibinova. Seniors: Avstriyskaya, Gracheva, Ivankova (request from her club to replace her with Gushchina), Mikhailova, Shuboderova (who was looking for Shuboderova?). Kostornaya withdrew on 31 August for medical reasons.

And then someone is wondering why I'm upset about Lena Pavlova. She's much better than all these senior ladies, well, maybe except ABBA girl. And she's gone to the pairs... What a nonsense... :disapp:

Waitlisted: Juniors: Chistiakova, Gushchina (she was requested to be moved to seniors), Khabibullina. Seniors: Mostenets, Istomina, Fomina. Pavlova has just moved to Moscow, right? Maybe they haven't got around to her yet, this is only Stage I.

ME!!! :yahoo:
She's so cute and graceful, just can't stay on her feet as much as the other girls. No falls this season Polina! :roll5:

No, I meant Pavlova has ended her career in the singles and now she's in the pairs. Her scores were around 60+ and 120+ at every competition...

Ah yes, you are right :dumb: But one could argue that some girls on the list would have been better off doing the same, rather than Lena losing out. A lot of girls are too scared to try pairs even if they are the right size, they'd rather trail at the bottom of singles competitions till they decide they've had enough. St. Petersburg girls like Lena are actually more likely to move to pairs because they can be politely asked to leave if they don't demonstrate results after a while.

ETA: with the current level of Russia's singles field there are girls with few prospects who could outjump every pairs lady in existence. It's become a bit of an idee fixe of some fans: "why doesn't girl X try pairs?"

True. But I just don't understand situation with Elena. As I said her results were not bad. She earned not so long ago around 126 points for the free skate. Other girls in your list like: Avstriyskaya, Gracheva, Ivankova, Shuboderova, never gained even 120 points for their free programs. And they're all still in the singles. Why Elena with decent results is going to the pairs, and weak skaters are still in the singles.

Lena is doing pairs because she decided she has a better chance in pairs, I assume?.. And the others didn't.

If one could only move a skater to pairs by decree... Maybe we won't have a bunch of girls with no triples in pairs. But then people may complain and sue and stuff :dev3: Refusing to state-fund their training is a legitimate way though, if they want to continue after repeatedly placing at the bottom, let them go to a private skating school. St. Petersburg is known for taking that approach, Moscow tends to be more lenient, thus more St. Petersburg girls in pairs.

Oops, I didn't think about that. :) Well, if it was Lena's own decision then I'm okay with that. But still I'm sad. There's one of hers beautiful programs. :sad4:

Let's be realistic. There is 11 ladies fighting for 14 spots at JGP, and Lena was not as good as them. The situation in junior ladies won't be any less crowded for at least a few years, and suddenly she would not be junior eligible any more, without world ranking, without international experience... look what happened with Gerasimova, Titushkina, Shershak etc. And those ladies had at least one medal each at JGP event, and things were not crowded at that time yet. I think Lena has done the most sensible thing she could have done. In pairs she can get from zero to junior worlds within a year or two, and the competition is not as tough yet, because the junior pairs are prone to splitting up. Three best pairs from two years ago all split up, which means lots of open opportunities for newcomers.

I think that's what people like about her though. There are plenty of the whole been there done that choreographic based programs focused on refinement and lord knows they'll be plenty of more to come. It's what judges and traditional fans crave. I say refinement be damned and just enjoy the wild spirit this girl has and let's see where it goes. I'm hoping we can start to see more of it honestly.

This doesn't mean I can't respect and appreciate a good classic style that's simple and elegant. In fact.....they both probably help me appreciate the other one the more I think on it.

I should have qualified that I'm not a fan of her skating -- yet. While I do love me some scrappy skating that is just technically awesome (see: Tonya Harding/Surya Bonaly), I do appreciate a certain level of refinement. Of course, she's just a junior, so a lot of slack is being cut for her... but compared to Trusova, she's got a ways to go. I can see Trusova transitioning to seniors easily, whereas Tarakanova will have a tough time, unless she develops other aspects of her skating (which I have no doubt she will work on). But man, the talent in Eteri's camp. They are literally cranking out top technicians after top technicians... and (while others may disagree), I actually commend them for making each one distinctive and playing off certain strengths and abilities, and even having unique things (like that upright bent over catchfoot position) that set them apart from each other.

Nobody is ever forced to try pairs, don't worry. Lozko could have been perfect for pairs but she was terrified so decided to try dance for which she was less suited and too old really, that didn't work out either. And now she is hoping to go into singles again, but this summer she didn't even have 3-3 so I am not sure how that's going to work out, tbh.

Well even in a year things can change a lot. Remember Zagitova - basically unknown, but now she is one of the top contenders for the olympics spot (of course we have to wait for official starts, but something tells me that she's gonna become even stronger and more polished). Also i think Tarakanova has a huge potential PCS-wise, i don't know if you saw her dance from choreography classes, but she looks amazing there, and i think it's just a matter of time/programs for her to really shine. After all, she now trains with the best of the best, and i doubt she will remain as she is now. But even as she is now - her SP is definitely my favorite one this season (at least by now).

Yeah, I agree, but if compare Tarusina and Pavlova for example, to me, Lena has better skating skills than Anna and also more difficult jumps than Davydov's group (Tarusina and Abba girl) with their turns before almost every jump. So Lena could fight at least with them, and could win this fight.

Please, be realistic! Lena had the same opportunities as Tarusina. She was attending the same competitions, and yet she did not have comparable results. It's great that you like her, but it is not true that she could beat Tarusina. If she could, she would be winning nationals and other important competitions and then be invited to test skates...

I certainly hope there will be a livestream!

Trusova somehow reminds me of Sasha Proklova... I don't know what it is. Does anyone?

Is this confirmed? I thought she was going to skate with Pitkeev. Is that DOA? :drama:

The Pitkeev thing is off by all accounts. Whether she is actually going to be a singles skater again is not certain but it's been said that she wanted to try.

Many changes have been made in the lists of JGP.
