Deniss Vasiljevs

Huge thanks to Deniss's Japanese fan who uploaded this practice video of his SP!:clap: Opera music (not my forte, but I'm sure someone else will recognize it)...beautiful skating. Oh, I'm so upset that I can't watch him live, unless I can time my break just right.

They better not shaft him on PCS compared to a couple other guys from bigger countries...that's all I have to say :dev2:

I just watched the jump 8 times in a row...and I still can't tell? I think it's probably a triple flip - but wouldn't that be amazing if he suddenly had a 4f with no warning?

I think there would have been a lot more applause and it would have been reported already  Doesn't hurt to dream, though.

I wish we could get some reports to know if he's been attempting quads, and with what kind of success rate.

BEAUTIFUL, DENISS!!!!! The measure of a superb skater and program is how mesmerized you are by a far-away fancam behind glass. Patrick did that for me already this summer, and Deniss just did!!! And this is a practice video with a couple marked jumps. It is lovely! :yay: I'm not an opera person either and I don't know Tosca well, but this didn't sound like the warhorse parts of Tosca. It's more lilting and lyrical, not typical words I think of when I think of Tosca. I'm not sure which jump Deniss did here, but if it was a quad, I doubt that it is planned for that spot. I would think he'd put it much earlier in the program. Anyway, I especially love the transitions and footwork in this program!!!

Well, now that I've had a couple hours to process my initial disappointment at the placement, I can go back to how much I like this program. Deniss will grow into it over the season.

It was unfortunate to see him look so nervous that he popped the flip, and only a level 3 on the stsq - but I really loved the new spin position, the long lines in the choreography, the spread eagle, etc. It was good they had this chance to work out the bugs!

Shame about the flip, though you could tell he had been worrying about it. He doesn't normally practice jumps during his runthroughs. But the program really came alive in the second half, and once he gets more experience with it, it will become a masterpiece. (I was honestly a little surprised he only got StSq3, because it looked great and plenty difficult to me but I haven't been watching skating for long, so /shrug)

Reusing his gala costume was also a good idea, it's a gorgeous costume and works well with the program, even if it makes me sad that he cannot afford a new one or at least not yet :(
Didn't that ending pose look familiar?

I like the costume a lot! It looks great on him! The program is lovely, as I already said. I look forward to seeing it evolve during the season. He is a young skater who makes a real effort for the transitions and footwork to match the music. Nice first outing. :) No quad here, but I wonder if they will try to put it in at some point this season. Or maybe only in the LP to start with?

Quite good start of the season, even with this poor 3F. His 3A was excellent however :-)
I like the program very much (though I am not an admirer of "Tosca"). It gives him possibility for technical advancement during the season (a quad?); and from PC point of view it's eye catching just now.
And his shirt is so lovely that I can watch it every year till his retirement :D

this is not an oft-used aria, though. even though it's from tosca it's not a war-horse. also great costume. very nice program, his 4th place is... well it made me scratch my head. hopefully he will get the pcs he deserves later in the season.

I really liked this program, he looked nervous for some reason, it's a shame he didn't skated clean.

You could see the disappointment in Steph's face he heard the pcs score, that made me really sad.

That stood out to me too. He knows it's wrong and not fair. I would really like someone (non-biased) to explain how Deniss deserves to be that far behind Jason and Shoma in PCS. A couple points shy? Ok, fine. But that much of a gap is rubbish.

I am not the biggest opera fan around, but I really like this piece. It's definitely not overused like Turandot, thank god, or the common cuts from Tosca that we've all seen plenty of times in skating. Deniss can really make it his own.

It's very possible that he has a new costume that isn't finished yet. Some guys even skate in training clothes this early in the season. But I wouldn't mind if he kept this one - it's simple but it looks really nice on him.

I agree with everything you say here. My heart broke a little too as soon as the PCS was announced, Lambiel shook his head and said something as if saying, 'no, not good.' I got excited all day to see him and Deniss hugging with big smile, but we didn't get it yesterday. Sad. That PCS is low.

I agree with you all. Sure he was nervous but that does not mean his SS or ice coverage was any worse than the rest, the GOE for most of his elements but especially for his step sequence (even if he didn't get level 4) feels wrong, and the gap in PCS is not justifiable. (Laurine was also well underscored in PCS yesterday ). Even with bad camera angles, you can see how measured and fluid and graceful his movements are and to see his performance not get properly rewarded is infuriating.

In the end I hope Deniss himself isn't too disappointed and is able to go out and perform in the FS without any worries. :hap10:
