2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

why can't she change layout ?, its early in the season, when she gets really comfortable with the program she can backload more jumps or change her layout, Medvedeva usually peaks late in the season.

I don't think she'll change the layout and I don't think she needs to do that. Rather she should work on the choreo, on the expression, interpretation, on feeling the music, things like that.

but she can backload more jumps later in the season to hold off Zagitova's BV threat.

:angry1: Zagi will be Russia no 2, no threat for Evgenia. Actually, Zagi is in danger, as is vulnerable to PCS inflation for Osmond, a Japanese, maybe an American too.... being Russia no 2 is a really bad thing :(.

Russians......I love Alena Leonova. She makes me smile and you can just tell that she loves to skate. I swear that if she was from any Country other than Russia, she'd be on the World Team. With Zagitova and Evgenia being solid locks to make the team. Who would you choose for the final spot. Tuk, Rad, Pogo, Alena, or someone else?

Let's play a game! And the name (of the game): How many points lost Alena Kostornaya in her FS?

1) First spin - yes, there was confuse with her hands, but it didn't affected GOE. All judges except one (who gave 3) gave her 2 GOE. Well, maybe, if not confuse, 2-3 judges could gave her also 3. +0.00-0.20 points
2) StSq3 - also fine, I'm sure they planned level 3, she was too careful, but anyway also all judges except one (who gave 1) gave her 2 GOE. +0.00-0.20 points
3) Second spin could be better. At the end of the spin she was a bit slow. +0.10-0.30 points
4) 3Lz - just mavelous. But out of the time. It was before 2:00. No extra bonus. +0.80-1.00 points
5) 3F+3T - a bit shaky flip, but judges didn't think so. +0.00+0.20 points
6) 3F+2T+2T - she did this combination near the judges panel, did before it many turns, and got ! for that. That's why 0 GOE. So she lost +0.50-1.50 points
7) 3S+3T - shaky sal, toe loop is almost URed. And anyway she got 1.1 points from GOE. But it could be better. +0.30-0.50 points
8) 3Lo - I rewatched this program three times, but noticed scratсhing of nose only after samkrut and nasty bully tars mentioned it. +0.10+0.50 points
9) 2A - amazing, two greedy judges gave her only 1 GOE for that. +0.10-0.30 points
10) 2A - this one was bad, she was lucky that she got 1 GOE from each judge. +0.50+1.00 points
11) Last spin could be better. +0.20-0.50 points

PCS also could be bigger if she wasn't so nervous. So, I'm bad in math, but I dare to say she lost about 5-6 points.

Actually, in my opinion, she was looking quite confident, especially in the SP. That's what surprised me the most about her.
That look at the end of her SP was basically saying to judges "you have no option now but to place me first"

After two jumping passes maybe, but not before. She was lucky that she didn't spoil her second spin. Only after the second try to catch she grabbed the blade. With spoiled spin the whole program could go wrong.

Looks Maria is in a good shape. The LP is less boring as I thought. It is amazing at her height of 5‘7“ of not more, she keeps her jumps and jumps even better. She even added tanos over the summer. What I can tell she is a fast learner. I agree that her tanos are not pretty, but it does not bother me that much, because it happens very fast. Because I notice it is gone. I noticed she has proportionally short arms in spite of long-legged. So I am not sure if more practice would make her tano prettier.

She was 5'7'' last year. I saw her last year and this year - visually she has become taller. I would say 5'8'' - 5'9''

Still believe her tanos may improve over time. After all, it takes some practice, and she basically just started.

Yes, I believe Maria is taller, and she might be still growing. Her height, combined with her triples, combined with her consistency, is already a modern wonder. Instead of losing her jumps, her jumps are getting better, another wonder. Just wish she had some more exciting music.

Yes, and praise to Panova for giving her a jump technique that would survive puberty unlike some who are now struggling with jumps after growing.

there's no jumping technique that would 100% survive puberty. it all depends on a puberty. and despite a good skate from today, masha is still very prone to underrotations.
tom zakrajsek in his interview to TSL was the first, who said something about good and bad jumping tecnique (i.e. height of jumps vs. speed of rotation). they discussed how awful lipnitskaya is, i believe.
but since then all TSL listeners are repeating this nonsense.
in fact, good technique includes both the speed of rotation and the height. and you can't just teach good technique to anyone, a person should be a natural athlete to jump high, and the same is true about the speed of rotation.
another thing is that seems like tom z. is not very good in teaching how to properly rotate jumps, many of his skaters are having a loose arms in the air and a very slow rotation. so yeah. for him a fast rotation is a bad thing

Does anyone know what is happening with Polina Tsurskaya? I know she has been injured in the past and underwent surgery, but is there any hope she will compete again this season? I find her absolutely breathtaking and she is definitely my favourite Russian lady. She is the full package IMHO.

Just rewatched Evgenia's and Serafima's short programs from Courchevel... Well, Evgenia grew so much since then, because she was lack of artistry and musicality, but Serafima's skating is just amazing. Also beautiful spins. And very beautiful music, what's more important. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and waltz from Evgeni Doga... Amazing music pieces.

So Anna Karenina is now official.

Black Swan is my favourite film, Don Quixote is one of my favourite ballets (love the Vasiliev/Maximova performances) and Anna Karenina is my favourite novel, I loved the 2012 film as well. And Alina and Evgenia are skating to all of this music. This is so exciting! These Russian ladies are giving me LIFE this season!
