2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Zhenya posted an Instagram story of Anna doing a spin
Omg, she's progressing fast! Last time I watched her with broken heart barely gliding on one foot and now she's spinning? :reye:

I adore this girl so much, I want her back on ice as quick as possible. On the other hand, I don't want her in serious competition this season and no stupid quads! I'm a bit confused and feel guilty wanting this kid healthy and breaking all records at the same time. :whack:

Ruthless yet wonderful sport. :hopelessness:

Eteri has now coached 10 different skaters to JGP lady's gold medals since the 2009-2010 season which was Polina Shelepen's first season. The rest of the Russian coaches together have coached 8 skaters to JGP ladies Gold Medals in that time frame. Serafima is included in both counts. The only other coach with sizable success is Mie Hamada with 4 different skaters who have earned gold on the JGP. Goncharenko and Mishin have had 2 lady's skaters earn gold on the JGP in that time period.

I've heard a couple of times from people how they think(and are sometimes worried) Russia will dominate women's skating like they dominate rhythmic gymnastics. I used to be skeptical but at the JGP I think it's going to be that way for a least another decade. Japan will give some competition, but every other country isn't able to develop a mass of skaters and any good skater will get sent to the senior circuit pretty quickly. The technical gap between winning an individual JGP gold and winning the actual senior World Championship is smaller than ever. Russia and it's system may find it easier to dominate the JGP than the senior World Championships. Every other country may find it equally difficult to develop a skater capable of getting in the JGP Final as developing a skater that wins a medal in senior WC. It's likely Russia will do well at the senior level for a long time but I wouldn't be surprised if someday we get to a point where Russia dominates the JGP but struggles at the senior level like with dance and pairs currently.

If Kostornaya and Samodurova make the JGP Final, then 13 out of 18 spots for Russian Nationals will be filled: Leonova Tuktamysheva Pogorilaya Radionova Medvedeva Sotskova Tsurskaya Zagitova Mikhailova Panenkova Trusova Tarakanova Kostornaya Samodurova

That leaves 5 spots for these and maybe a few lesser : Sakhanovich Gubanova Nugumanova Fedichkina Gulyakova Konstantinova Kurakova Tarusina

There's a good chance one or both of Pogorilaya and Radionova will not make it to the Olympics. It'll be interesting if either one will want to switch countries in order to make it to the Olympics(I actually have my doubts). But if they do I think they need to stick around for at least one more season in Russia.

Don’t forget Stanislava Konstantinova!

WTT gave huge scores to Mai Mihara/Wakaba Higuchi, and again to Mai at Japan Open.

And at Nationals they've given some pretty high scores too. http://www.jsfresults.com/National/2015-2016/fs_e/nationalsenior/data0105.pdf . Last year at NHK Hanyu's got 9.75's and even a 10 with a 4L error in his SP, and up to a 9.75 for PE even with a fall and doubled jump in his LP.

Russia is still definitely the leader though in overscoring, especially on home ice. Everywhere overscores from Japan to Canada to USA, but usually only in Russia do we see personal bests when skaters fall, and errors completely ignored by the judges (whether hands down on a jump, a two footed throw, a fall, and GOE handed out like candy. Hanyu getting 95 PCS with 2 falls was pretty bad (even for Nationals), but it's still nowhere as ridiculous as Plushenko's 95 at Russian Nationals with that hot mess of a FS (https://web.archive.org/web/20131227060740/http://fsrussia.ru/upl/ckeditor/protocol_rusnat1314.pdf - with 9.75s and even a 10.00, lol).

For a while, I thought Japan was stricter, but they still have their faves and will be tougher on the #2/#3 skaters (see: Suzuki losing NHK to Mao that one year). I notice it in Russia for skaters like Radionova or Menshov who are "sensible judging" scapegoats to counteract the generosity that the faves get, to make judges seem less biased over. Although, I can see in Japan they're already being generous to their own skaters more and more. I mean, it makes sense -- if everyone else is doing it, why would you hold your own skaters back?

Maybe I should narrow down to Japanese Nationals / Local competitions. WTT is such a different thing that's what I had on mind while writing that.

14 out of 18. Is it time for Russian Senjior Nationals to go to 24 Ladies? It's only going to get worse. Next year Shcherbakova and Vasilieva will be able to qualify, plus any new juniors that reach the JGPF (3 this year). Can only think of Leonova as someone who you can say will definitely retire after this season. What a Nationals that would be, 24 Ladies all capable of reaching 180/190 domestically.

Satoko, Wakaba and Carolina do not pack their programs with transitions. In fact Satoko has quite a number of crossovers (not excessively), same for Gracie Gold. I will call their SS as best of the field if they can maintain their speed with as many transitons as Eteri Girls. However, they don't.

But if that is the case, why are TR and SS considered separately? If Satoko and Wakaba do not pack their programs full of TR but have strong SS, the scoring should be them getting high SS and low TR. Besides, SS is not about maintaining high speed - in the ISU description, it was described as being able to gain and vary speed effortlessly. Similarly, Eteri's girls should get higher TR but average SS. What is not acceptable is that all of them end up getting high SS and high TR when to the observer, it is not the case. I will make an exception for CaroK. She does not have as much TR in the quantitative sense but last I read the ISU rules, TR also judge quality of Transitions and include use of upper body movement, not just lots of connecting steps. But in terms of SS, I also don't see CaroK having regained the sort of fast turns and super deep hanging edges which she used to showcase in the last quad (most evident in her Ave Maria SP in 2014), so I don't think her SS deserve the 9s right now either - more a low to mid 8s.

Hope we will see Polina and Anna in good shape. Also hope live stream will be better than SPB Cup stream

As I remember live stream on that gray channel TheFSRussia was only once, but that was the final with Lip, and quality of it was bad as always. I suppose there will be only videos, but it's better than nothing. Also, at the first stage I saw the difference. They probably bought a little better camera. Quality of the videos was not so bad as before.

Why is Tarakanova participating? :scratch2:
She got her spot in Nationals by advancing to the JGPF.

There will be 4 spots left. And unless the fed changed the rules, you can only compete at either senior or junior Russian cup events but not both. Nugumanova and Kurakova already competed at a Junior cup event so they are not eligible for Senior nats. They are trying to get a spot for Junior nats since they did not compete on the JGP. Same for Tarusina if she does a Junior cup event. But one of the other 5 ladies will be disappointed.

What a shame about Kurakova. No GP spot, no senior nationals. It looks like they marinate her in purpose. In current Radio's shape, clean Kurakova easily will beat her.

Nastya was super clean today! Her program is amazing! She needs to gain some speed and it will be heaven for me :dbana:

I haven't seen yet but looking at the protocols Gubanova has just skated a perfect FS at Cup of Nice!! Can't wait to see the video of it!
