Nathan Chen

Geez, don't agree with the B. ESP commentators at all. I disagree that the music is too mature for Nathan. In fact, I think he feels the music deeply and you can see it in the way he moves to the phrasing and the highs and lows of the music, and it really resonates with me. Projection and intensity will come as he gets more comfortable with the tech content.

commentators haven't registered with Nathan's FS yet, SP is an instant crowd pleased, everyone will love it right away, which is obvious.
But FS has much more depth, and actually, nobody has ever even heard of the music ever, it will take time for people to digest (and rewatch)
it seems like every commentary for this GP, ALL the commentators has to speak thru Nathan's FS somewhat to introduce the audience the status quo. the same older, Nathan is a jumper but aim for improvement in artistry. This narrative...
Even CBC, yet ignored the really artistic moment of Nathan's FS.
Here is my casual skating viewing friends' reaction, They LOVED Nathan's FS stsq and choreo stsq into spin to ending parts, Yet unfortunately, both CBC and NBC talk thru it jut to feed enough info (unnecessary in my opinion) for the audience.
And my friends all wanna them to shut up and they just wanna just watch those fabulous parts.

CBC though does pointed out the specific great stuff in Nathan's FS than other's very generic commentary. They are much more professional/knowledgable and always has been that way.

B.EURO I think one guy did not warm up to Nathan's SP, but the other guy saw potential just didnot voice it in the chaos of everything.

Of course, Nathan himself needs to polished and do better next time

Like I said before, it will be a up-hill battle for him.

SP is for sure a winner, but FS has masterpiece written all-over it. As an champion you also wanna leave something, that can last in time.

it you wanna an smart way to an glorious OG moment, you maybe wanna something like Wakaba's FS.
But fortunately, Nathan's FS is not exactly a Nessum Dorma type of thing, but it does has an innate triumphant and inspiring nature to it, Many Chinese fans has expressed the feeling the felt very emotional towards the end, and it is a special kind, it is some kinda of hope, warm, free and prosperous feeling and yet also very oriental.
So much different than your typical climax ending.

B.ESP guys commentary has declined in quality ever since that Mark guy joined the panel. He appears to have no clue about the current judging system and a very outdated understanding what is the winning choreography is today.

I am so happy for Nathan. This win should give him a good psychological boost. But he needs to crack 200 in free before the Olympics if he really wants to compete for the Gold. Axels look hopeless, so he needs one more clean quad, preferably loop.

Both programs are awesome. I think the choreographers went about it differently:

1. From last year's exhibition we know that Nathan is an excellent interpreter of contemporary pieces. Shae Lynn highlighted this in his short. She elevated it by including interesting movements and pushing Nathan's skating to live up to the intensity of the music. The virtues of the program are obvious.

2. Lori gave him a program that challenges him in a different way--and because the storyline is more complex and the program longer he'll need to grow into it. Mark rightfully noticed the choreographic highlights of the Rite of Spring footwork. He seems to have overlooked all of the wavy/circular movements of the first section or how they're reintroduced after the footwork and how those morph into more skyward looking moves, eventually ending in the triumphant coda. Nathan still needs more stamina to sell the entire program, but that has nothing to do with the brilliant music choice or the excellent construction of the program. Once Nathan hits the jumps and owns his Brian Boitano/Paul Wylie moment at the end people will get out of their seats.

its been crazy weekend for me so couldnt watch anything live and trying to catch up to everything :dbana:

congratulations to Nathan for his very 1st GP Gold!!! :yahoo: its amazing how open and passionate he skates this season, his progress since last season is amazing, love love love his programs (i know i said this before but i will say it many times in the future as well ) i just hope he will continue to skate regardless of the results at the Olympics because he still has so much to offer

i updated the OP with results and videos, i know i am missing a lot on articles/thread section so please forgive me :slink::biggrin:

Not Nathan's best performances this weekend, he is capable of much more... but this is not the time to be "peaking", so it's no bad thing! A great result anyway, and he's on track for the GP final...

Mark's comments are often... "opinionated"... and can be dubious sometimes - but he doesn't actually commentate that often.

British Eurosport commentary is still top-notch when Chris Howarth is there. He knows what he's talking about, he's eagle-eyed, very knowledgeable, and very astute...

PS. Arutunyan is starting to creep me out a bit... is it just me? O_o

I had no time or strength to cope with my idiotic laptop and snail-paced internet over the weekend to post something structured and regular in Rostelecom thread, so I thought to pop up there and say my congratulations to Nathan on his 1st GP gold medal.

I think that what is most striking and valuable for me seeing his programs and the way he performs, is that the content got so much 'customized' to his abilities/skill and that at the same time he's challenged by it, because to succeed he has to mature and develop himself, too. This kind of organic progress from both sides - in a form of maturing the skater through developing/honing the material - is the best thing that could happen to Nathan. Like some of you said already, while the SP is a constant 'crowd pleaser', FS is more 'monumental' and 'long-distance' experience in terms of building it alone by a skater and then embedding it into audiences' minds and memories.

The SP idea alone is magnificent: to capture the originality, quirkiness, boldness of the song into choreography, to show off the edgy-ness and just be different from others, and Nathan really is a perfect fit for that concept. I love that contrast between his control and isolation on jumps and this 'wild'/un-kept/daring movement, body expression he presented, perfectly matching the mood of the Clementine's piece. I think that the wholesome of the program creates a new dimension and quality of the Nathan comparing to not only his former self, but also to other skaters. This SP creates a challenge not only for Nathan to live up all the details, intricacies choreography and interpretation poses, but also for audiences to realize that he has grown up to present such original, personalized concept which shows off much more that his technical skill. It's always a treat for me to see this kind of 'upping' the standard by originality, non-conventional way skaters/choreographers are treating competitive programs - I admire Nathan for going that route and making it so unique and exciting to watch; he really kept me on the edge of my seat and kept the tension of the music throughout the whole performance.

And if this doesn't make you go awwwwwwwwwwww.... I think the first pic is from 2013 US Nationals where he competed sick.

Kori Ade has commented on this with regards to Jason: her relationship with him is different because he started with her so young. I think it's wonderful that we're getting to see another side of Raf. It's easy to stereotype him as a certain type of man but obviously there's more there.

At the banquet with the other medalists. I think Nathan finally upgraded his H&M suit from last season!

A little more from SPUR Magazine. The title is "Inside Nathan Chen's Head." It looks like he gives comments about various things/people, including skaters, basketball players, and Benjamin Clementine. The skaters he's asked about are: Chan, Asada, Lambiel, and John Curry.

I can't quite figure out what is in the small boxes that were presented to the medalists on the podium.

I think that those are watches, but I can't be sure.

Anyone know?

Thank you. The link isn't working great right now, but I'll explore it later.

I've always liked a strong masculine watch, and I bet these Russian ones are beauties.
