Deniss Vasiljevs

Thanks a lot to Jelena for the information. Tonight I will read the interview from the pics, but tomorrow I'm going to rush to the stall and buy the newspaper. The bold bit actually says -I haven't even thought about girls. Figure skating and studies take every minute of my time.

I'd be very grateful for your translation! It looks like a good article!

For anyone who’s interested in Olympic fashion, I found some designs for Latvia :D These were designed by Polish company 4f. Latvia also partnered with them for Rio 2016.

There should be a few more costumes, but 4f only showed these at the fashion show, as they mostly focused on Polish Olympic Collection at that event, obviously. :v
But anyway, Deniss might be wearing one of those costume, so this is quite interesting to me :)))))

I found the whole fashion show: https://www.facebook.com/4Fpolska/videos/1635634836488149/. Latvia's part is from 10:55 to 12:48.

I'd be very grateful for your translation! It looks like a good article!

Here is a part of the article in Latvian "Sporta Avīze" it''s only a summary and is not in the right order. Hope to do more.

What have you refused from because of figure skating?
From possibility to meet with my classmates. The first three years at school I was a disciplined and hardworking student. I communicated much with my friends. Now I miss it.
But half of my days I devote to skating. If I had more free time, I would like to do a lot of other things.
I enjoy drawing, watching ballet. Lately I don’t have time for my most loved subject- history. Philosophy is a subject I am interested in right now.
I have a thirst for knowledge. I like studying. The deeper you get into something, the more you gain.
A very simple stuff I have never done (but would like to do) is playing basketball and volleyball.
(In February on TV he told that he can’t play football because it can harm his ankles)
Do you have a friend you communicate regularly?
Because of my lifestyle it is not possible to foster good relationship, but I have one friend I trust and rely on.
Three years ago you wanted to be a dentist. The husband of you coach Snieskiene was a dentist. And today?
Then I didn’t realize how much time figure skating will take. It would be difficult to study medicine and now sitting the whole day in a little room is not what I dream of.
Do you have any dreams not related to skating?
A lot of ideas but nothing has been formed clearly. I love skating and would like to make use of my knowledge and abilities, but I don’t think it would be coaching. Just for the sake of contrast.
Is there anything that can captivate you half as much as skating?
I have a lot of interests. I am a creative person. I adore cooking, especially desserts. Sometimes I bake cakes and treat others. Then I devote my free time to making cakes. I like to change the usual ingredients a bit. I have two cake recipes of my own. People like them. But I want not only to cook a tasty dish but also to make it visually attractive. Everything that is around me I want to add a little bit of uniqueness.
I am an inquisitive and decisive person. If I make up my mind to do something, I will do it.
You say that in your soul you feel an artist. How does it manifest?
I like drawing. It is one of my most beloved activities. The world is full of beauty and it is the way I can show how I perceive it. It gives me peace and rest. I often draw during competition just before going on the ice. Thus I release my emotions.
What comes into your mind when you hear the word Olympiad?
Its immense work and not only physical but also emotional. A new experience. But I don’t want to be only one of 24 skaters. For me it is just one step to get higher. I have ambitions and I will achieve what I wish.
What do you know about your financial situation? Skating is an expensive kind of sport.
(Pause) Let’s say it this way. I’m happy that my country and my native town Daugavpils support me and help cover a part of expenses. I’m grateful to Champery Skating School. I’m so lucky to have people around me who help me to grow and develop and take care of my expenses. “Edea” supplies me with skates and John Wilson with blades.
But I myself invest the money I sometimes earn in commercial competitions. I would like to be more stable and independent in this respect. While you are a professional figure skater, you can’t earn much. If your career has been successful, then you might have a chance to earn for living. I have been in figure skating for 15 years and this is my investment in my future.
What is your parents’ part in your career?
It’s inestimable. They have devoted a lot. I am immeasurably grateful to them. There are no words to express it. I haven’t even realized what they have sacrificed. It’s not only a huge money investment, but also time, effort and patience. It’s their gift to me. It has been an important challenge to my family. I’m grateful we managed to do it, not all families can cope with it.
Your mother Regina has always been nearby you during competitions. What about your father Sergejs?
Everybody has to do what he knows better. My mom knows a lot about skating, so she is with me. Father is responsible for order at home.

Thank you! It's great to be able read this - Latvian journalists ask different questions than figure skating journalists so this feels fresh.

Hi everyone, this is my very first reply. Thank you so much AgnesR for your effort, it means a lot to me understand this intervew. Deniss is so sincere and mature in his thoughts. His thankful words for his parents are so touching.....

Thank you, AgnesR, for the translation. I love this:

But I don’t want to be only one of 24 skaters. For me it is just one step to get higher. I have ambitions and I will achieve what I wish.

That's the attitude! This is a marathon, not a sprint...I have to remind myself he is still only 18, even though he may talk like a wise old man sometimes

If it is still actual for somebody, here is the second part of the summary of Deniss' interview. It was published before Rostelecom. I have always liked to read or listened to his interviews. They are full of determination and surprising self-confidence. I wouldn't like him to become a "jumping machine." It happened so that only some days ago I had time to watch Carolina's performances at Rostelecom. They were amazing in their simplicity and expression. I hope that Deniss will also give us the pleasure to watch his performances for long years (the same as his coach).
Tell me what kind of music you like?
Different styles of music. I’m a big fan of classical music especially when I am having a rest. When training, I prefer rock, pop or country music. I love Deep Purple. Sometimes I listen to some meditative music, sometimes enjoy listening to Japanese traditional music. Whatever I am doing, I listen to music. But I don’t like rep and hard rock.
It is clear what you do on ice when training. What do you do (in summer) off-ice?
I couldn’t do everything on ice if I didn’t train off-ice. The most is done just outside the skating rink. Sometimes I spend about 45 minutes to do warming up for one hour on ice. I go to the gym, do different jumps, stretching exercises and exercises forming my artistic qualities.
You speak a lot about a proper diet. Who takes care of it?
I cook myself as well, but most useful tips on healthy food come from my coach. In Canada I found out which products are really necessary for my body and without which I can do. I regularly do blood tests to check whether my body gets all necessary minerals. It’s important to have healthy food. My eating habits have changed a lot. Now I understand better what food makes me stronger as a professional athlete. The most difficult is to control how much you eat. When you lose a lot of energy and feel hungry, it doesn’t always mean that you can eat as much as you want. To tell the truth it was not that difficult to avoid eating sweets, because I know why I have to do it.
(On Latvian TV in February he told in “funny despair” how difficult it is to live in the country where the best cheese is produced and not being allowed to eat it as much as you want.)
Do you remember when you “fell ill” with figure skating?
I can’t speak about one moment or a period of time. My love to skating didn’t appear in one day. It was a process. Sometimes the desire grew stronger, sometimes it weakened. Now I am happy to be a figure skater. It is a flight of my soul. The further I go, the more I like it. I like art, I am an emotional person. I clearly see my goals.
What can you say about the judges, their attitude to you. Have you ever been angry at them?
It’s not always easy to understand their motivation. To my mind if a young skater can show the same quality as the ones who are well known, they shouldn’t be judged differently. But figure skating is not only a kind of sport where centimeters and seconds determine the place. It’s a kind of art and people have different tastes. So it is difficult to please everybody. But that can be considered the glamour of figure skating.
You said that the audience’s appreciation means a lot to you. What are you feeling during standing ovation?
It’s difficult to describe. It’s something magical. It’s the highest evaluation to me as an artist (if I may say so). It is a huge delight to me to see their emotions and support, the flags of Latvia and it gives strong motivation to strive more. The more I give to the people, the more I get back. Therefore I always try to do my utmost.
You have plenty of fans just in Japan. How come?
Actually I don’t know why, but the Japanese, especially women, are more carried away with figure skating than people in Europe. I like to perform in Japan, because they appreciate what you are doing. The better you perform, the more emotions they display.
After the world championship your coach said that you need a good rest. Did you manage to enjoy the sun and the beach?
For me as a professional athlete recreation means a change of the environment which gives me new emotions. I was in Japan, Portugal, visited some cities in Switzerland and went to Latvia.
In spring you came to Latvia to finish class 11. The new season will be very busy- school leaving and the Olympics.
It’s very difficult to study in one country and train in the other. I passed the exam in informatics. I visited my native town which I love very much. I met my dear parents. It’s extremely important to me because I don’t know when I will have a chance to meet them again. Yes, it will be a very difficult year, but hardships make us stronger. I have already started preparing for school exams and I am proud to represent my country at Olympics. Participating at the Olympics has already been my objective for 3 years.
The previous year the music at which you skate was faster and more aggressive.
That’s right, but a good artist must be able to skate at any music and I don’t want that my performances are related to one certain music style. I wish all my performances were like a piece of art because for me figure skating is not only sport but also art. It’s very important that people like my programs.
You are a young and attractive man, but you are not active in social networks. What’s the problem?
I would like to do it more, but there are 2 problems-lack of time and it takes a lot of energy.
I’m a very active person and it’s difficult for me to sit in one place. I like movement. It is easier to communicate with the person on the spot, if I see him. I’m not old fashioned. I adore computers and the Internet but people have to find balance between technologies and the old values.

When speaking about his new programs, Deniss says that the costume for SP was made in Japan and for Lombardia it was not ready yet. The music is from Tosca(1st act) and nobody has skated at this music up to now so he feels proud that he is the first.

Thank you so much, not only because I am always happy to hear about Deniss, but because google translate from Latvian to English was driving me to despair!

(I enjoyed learning some Latvian though - the things figure skating makes us do!)
